TRANSNISTRIA, the Country Still Living in the Soviet Union (Between Moldova & Ukraine)
Welcome to Transnistria, the thin strip of land between Moldova & Ukraine, which roughly 500,000 people call home. It is a self declared, unrecognised country that fought to remain independent from Moldova after the breakup of the Soviet Union. I explore its capital city, Tiraspol, where statues of Lenin can be found amongst its Soviet styled streets.

#61 TIRASPOL, MOLDOVA ???????? | PRIDNESTROVIE (Transnistria???) - LAST state of the SOVIET UNION (USSR)
I did a day trip from Chisinau to Tiraspol, the capital city of Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic - the 'separatist' region of Moldova. The journey took about an hour by minivan and went through a border check.
Since I was there on a day trip, I was given a Migration Card with stay up to 10 hours only.
Tiraspol, the capital is walkable with lots of Soviet styled buildings. Sunday was not a good day to visit as most shops were closed.

Moldova, Transnistria and its relationship with Russia | VPRO Documentary
How is the relationship of Moldova and Transnistria with Russia? What happened in Moldova after a change of regime and the cooperation agreement with the EU? Are Moldova and Transnistria depending on Russia and if so, why? A documentary about Moldova, Transnistria and its relationship with Russia.
In this eight-part travel series, the Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius travels through Russia and visits the neighbor countries Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. What image do the Russians have of their neighbors and vice versa? What are the relations between powerful Russia and the other former Soviet republics? And how do the countries around Russia treat their Russian inhabitants? A series about propaganda and identity.
Moldova seems to stand still. There are still Soviet buildings everywhere. And since the change of regime, the streets have not been serviced. Until 2009, the Communists still had the say. Recently, a pro-European coalition is at the power, signing a cooperation agreement with the EU. Russia was not pleased about it so that no Moldavian wine could be exported anymore. Wine is one of the most important export products in Moldova. Everywhere you go, you can see vineyards.
The two largest wine cellars of the world are in Moldova. In Cricova you can find a tunnel system of 120 kilometers. During the Second World War, Jews were hidden in the wine barrels. Today you can find wine collections that belong to personalities such as Putin, Angela Merkel or John Kerry.
Moldova is the poorest country in Europe. No wonder that many young job seekers are leaving the countryside. The remaining Moldovans have to be satisfied with the money from abroad, even though the pressure from Russia is as big as their dependency. The oil and gas come for example mainly from Russia. Jelle visits the territory of Transnistria, which freed itself from Moldavia after a bloody war in the 1990s and now wants to join Russia.

Unrecognised by UN, the region is supported strongly by Russia and you notice this when you cross the border (
Transnistria runs its own Parliament, currency, army and dispatches passports that can't be used anywhere else. This is a strange territory in the old continent that deserves a visit if you wish to get the real flavor of how life used to be in the former USSR.

Home Visit to JDC's Hesed client in Tiraspol, Moldova
During the numerous trips to the former soviet union, visited this amazing client of JDC's Hesed in Tiraspol Moldova. Talk about lesson in optimism... Hopefully you understand some Russian to hear him talk about his love to his wife, to life and to his family. About his hope to have many more Rosh HaShana. This visit took place during the Jewish high holidays. This beautiful Jewish gentleman had a prostate cancer which anywhere else in the world - may have given him a chance to survive. Not fir this guy who fought for life while describing how amazing the help he is getting from the local Hesed. Talk about magical people. Here is one....

Where Time Stands Still: Special Report from Moldova's Breakaway Transnistria
Transnistria - a thin strip of land between Ukraine and the Dniester River in eastern Moldova where the Soviet legacy remains strong today. Since declaring itself an independent in 1990, the region has operated with its own president, parliament, rules and even currency. Not a single U.N. member has acknowledged its independence - even Russia, a large military and financial contributor to the territory. Yet, as Hromadske found out, all is not well. In the quiet city of Tiraspol, it seems the political promises of prosperity, investment, and modernization have past unfounded.

The Forgotten Soviet Prison Under Chisinau
An unremarkable building in the Moldovan capital, Chisinau, conceals a secret: an underground prison where opponents of the Soviet regime were held and interrogated. The site was abandoned long ago, and few Moldovans know about the abuses committed there during the Communist era.

Moldova: Transnistria to join Russian Federation - Shtanski
20140402-046
W/S Transnistrian Moldavian Republic Foreign Ministry building
SOT, Nina Shtanski, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (speaking Russian): I want to stress that it is because of Russia that our republic survives economically and socially. I can't imagine what we'd do without Russian aid, including the financial aid we use to support the most vulnerable social groups.
C/U Shtanski's hands
SOT, Nina Shtanski, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (speaking Russian): As regards being a part of the Russian world, Transnistria has always been part of the Russian world. It is a Russian land, as you can see from our history. It was Transnistria that Bessarabia joined to form the Soviet Moldavia.
C/U Coat of arms of Transnistria
SOT, Nina Shtanski, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (speaking Russian): Transdniester has held more than six referenda, and five of them were set up to define our statehood. During the last one held in 2006, our people voted for independence and joining Russia. We reject any attempts to put our free will in an inferior position to those that were exercised in Kosovo, Sudan, Gibraltar, South Ossetia or Crimea. Our will has been expressed amid a large turnout. And today the policies defined by the people of our region are being pursued in a consistent and systemic way.

Moldova: Transnistria to join Russian Federation - Shtanski
Nina Shtanski, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic, discussed the common desire among the Transnistrian public to join the Russian Federation during an interview in Tiraspol, Wednesday.
Shtanski cited the high level of Russian aid received by the Republic and recent events in Crimea as being the main inspiration behind this growing public opinion. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Shtanski explains that five referenda have been held regarding their statehood, with the most recent in 2006 showing emphatic support for joining the Russian Federation.

Transnistria 2009
Transnistria, a breakaway region in Moldova, is one of the frozen conflicts the world inherited after the collapse of the Soviet Union 20 years ago. Kristof Clerix reports from Tiraspol, where geopolitics meets Soviet nostalgia.
