Hunua Falls is located in the western part of Hunua Ranges Regional Park in Auckland area. The spectacular 30-metre waterfall is part of the Wairoa River which carves through an ancient volcano as it winds its way north through the township of Clevedon, before meeting the Hauraki Gulf. The waterfall is extremely popular among the locals which makes it one of New Zealand Must See Waterfalls.
Hunua Falls is roughly a 45-60 minutes' drive away from Auckland City. The road surface is always sealed.
There are two more options to enjoy the waterfalls from the different perspectives:
Hunua Falls Lookout Walk – an easy 15 min return track takes all visitors to the opposite side of the river to the second lower lookout. Just cross the river via a footbridge, turn right and follow the river. Do not miss an opportunity to walk to the waterfall's base, touch the water and enjoy the falls power.
Falls Upper Lookout Walk – an easy 30 min return loop track takes all visitors to the upper waterfall lookout. Cross the river via a footbridge and follow the signs.
The waterfall is very popular among the locals, and it’s a very popular swimming spot in the area.
AUCKLAND BEST HIKES - HUNUA FALLS // NEW ZEALAND
Beauty of Auckland you decide to go on a hike and you meet so many people on the way, met 3 different groups of travelers while on this hike.
As you might be aware majority of the Waitakere Ranges hikes have been closed off to preserve the environment in the area from the Kauri dieback disease.
So we headed out down south south ways and took one of the longer hikes on the Massey/ Cossey Track as you go past the Hunua Waterfalls (17M Deep).
I would rate this as one of the top hikes in Auckland within driving distance - 1 Hour drive.

Hunua Falls ( Range ):
The Hunua Ranges cover about 400 square kilometers along the south eastern side of the Auckland region. Most of the area lies within the Waharau Regional Park, preserved for public recreation and water catchment. The park contains more than 450 species of native plants.
Hiking tracks in the park pass through dense native forests to high ridge lines that offer long range views to the city or the Firth of Thames. One of the popular shorter walks is to the impressive Hunua Falls. Swimming holes in the numerous streams and rivers offer a refreshing break on a more challenging hike.
Several camping areas, equipped with the basic necessities, provide scenic accommodation. These are located either near the park entrances or deep within the forest on some of the longer trails. Bookings are required - contact the Auckland Regional Council.
Mountain bikers are welcomed in the ranges and some exciting trails have been built by biking enthusiasts working with the regional council.
Both the Mangatawhiri and the Mangatangi dams offer rainbow trout fishing along the face of the dams.
The Hunua Ranges are located around one hour's drive from the Auckland city center.
