Britain’s Birmingham Tornado
Subscribe to Naked Science -
Every other Wednesday we present a new video, so join us to see the truth laid bare...
Tornados are one of the most deadly forces of nature, with winds up to 300mph. Their awesome power can rip apart anything that lies in their path. In America whole towns are annihilated, homes totally destroyed, and hundreds of lives are lost every year.
In Britain you might think you’re out of reach of the clutches of these deadly twisters, but you would be wrong. The United Kingdom’s second largest city, Birmingham, was hit in July 2005. What exactly happened that day? Why did it cause so much damage? And why was there no warning? At a time when extreme weather events were causing chaos in America, is it a sign that our own mild temperate climate could be coming to an end.
Thursday 28th July 2005, the weather report that morning had forecast some thundery showers in the Midlands area, no mention of a tornado. But that afternoon residents along a narrow corridor through the Birmingham suburbs from King’s Heath to Highgate, were about to have their whole world turned upside down. The Birmingham tornado was one of the strongest tornadoes recorded in the UK for nearly 30 years.

Birmingham UK 2020. CITY CENTRE WALK Birmingham New Street (Grand Central) to Moor St Station 1080p
Birmingham UK 2020. CITY CENTRE WALK Birmingham New Street (Grand Central) to Moor St Station 1080p
Here is a walk through video of the journey between Birmingham New Street (Grand Central) to Moor St Station, this change between stations is probably one of the most common when going Via Birmingham. A lot of people who visit the city for the first time get confused and lost between these two stations so hopefully this can help people reach there destination with more ease.
A little info on both stations
Birmingham New St (Grand Central)
New Street station was built by the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) between 1846 and 1854, on the site of several streets in a marshy area known as The Froggery. Samuel Carter, solicitor to both LNWR and the Midland Railway, managed the conveyancing. It was built in the centre of Birmingham, replacing several earlier rail termini on the outskirts of the centre, most notably Curzon Street, which had opened in 1838, and was no longer adequate for the level of traffic.
Until 1885 the LNWR shared the station with the Midland. However, in 1885 the Midland Railway opened its own extension alongside the original station for the exclusive use of its trains, effectively creating two stations side-by-side. The two companies stations were separated by a central roadway; Queens Drive.
Birmingham New Street is the largest and busiest of the three main railway stations in the Birmingham City Centre, England. It is a central hub of the British railway system. It is a major destination for Avanti West Coast services from London Euston, Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley via the West Coast Main Line, and the national hub of the CrossCountry network – the most extensive in Britain, with long-distance trains serving destinations from Aberdeen to Penzance] It is also a major hub for local and suburban services within the West Midlands, including those on the Cross City Line between Lichfield Trent Valley, Redditch, and Bromsgrove, and the Chase Line to Walsall and Rugeley Trent Valley.
The station is named after New Street, which runs parallel to the station, although the station has never had a direct entrance to New Street except via the Grand Central shopping centre. Historically the main entrance to the station was on Stephenson Street, just off New Street. Today the station has entrances on Stephenson Street, Smallbrook Queensway, Hill Street and Navigation Street.
New Street is the sixth busiest railway station in the UK and the busiest outside London, with 43.7 million passenger entries and exits between April 2017 and March 2018. It is also the busiest interchange station outside London, with nearly 6.8 million passengers changing trains at the station annually. In 2018 New Street had a passenger satisfaction rating of 92%, the third highest in the UK.
Birmingham Moor St Station
Earlier history (1909-1987)
At the turn of the 20th Century, suburban rail traffic into Birmingham was growing rapidly. The Great Western Railway greatly expanded their facilities in the city at that time to cope with the demands. Snow Hill station, their main station in Birmingham, was extensively rebuilt and expanded. However, the twin tracked Snow Hill tunnel, which ran underneath the city centre into Snow Hill from the south, did not have enough capacity to accommodate all of the traffic, and widening the tunnel was considered impractical. In order to solve the capacity problem therefore, Moor Street station was built at the opposite end of the tunnel to take terminating local trains from the south and relieve traffic.
Birmingham Moor Street is one of three main railway stations in the city centre of Birmingham, England, along with Birmingham New Street and Birmingham Snow Hill.
Today's Moor Street station is a combination of the original station, opened in 1909 by the Great Western Railway as a terminus for local trains, and a newer Moor Street station with through platforms, a short distance from the original, which opened in 1987, replacing the original. The two were combined into one station in 2002, when the original was reopened and restored, and the newer station rebuilt in matching style.
Moor Street has become more important in recent years; two of the original terminus platforms were reopened in 2010, and the station is now the terminus of many Chiltern Railways services from London Marylebone, as well as being an important stop for local services on the Snow Hill Lines. It is now the second busiest railway station in Birmingham.
Probably the Oldest Quran fragments found in Birmingham University
By Sean Coughlan
Education correspondent
What may be the world's oldest fragments of the Quran have been found by the University of Birmingham. Radiocarbon dating found the manuscript to be at least 1,370 years old, making it among the earliest in existence.
The pages of the Muslim holy text had remained unrecognised in the university library for almost a century. The British Library's expert on such manuscripts, Dr Muhammad Isa Waley, said this exciting discovery would make Muslims rejoice.
The manuscript had been kept with a collection of other Middle Eastern books and documents, without being identified as one of the oldest fragments of the Koran in the world.
Oldest texts
When a PhD researcher, Alba Fedeli, looked more closely at these pages it was decided to carry out a radiocarbon dating test and the results were startling.
The university's director of special collections, Susan Worrall, said researchers had not expected in our wildest dreams that it would be so old.
Finding out we had one of the oldest fragments of the Koran in the whole world has been fantastically exciting.
The tests, carried out by the Oxford University Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit, showed that the fragments, written on sheep or goat skin, were among the very oldest surviving texts of the Koran.
These tests provide a range of dates, showing that, with a probability of more than 95%, the parchment was from between 568 and 645.
They could well take us back to within a few years of the actual founding of Islam, said David Thomas, the university's professor of Christianity and Islam.
According to Muslim tradition, the Prophet Muhammad received the revelations that form the Koran, the scripture of Islam, between the years 610 and 632, the year of his death.
Prof Thomas says the dating of the Birmingham folios would mean it was quite possible that the person who had written them would have been alive at the time of the Prophet Muhammad. The person who actually wrote it could well have known the Prophet Muhammad. He would have seen him probably, he would maybe have heard him preach. He may have known him personally - and that really is quite a thought to conjure with, he says.
First-hand witness
Prof Thomas says that some of the passages of the Koran were written down on parchment, stone, palm leaves and the shoulder blades of camels - and a final version, collected in book form, was completed in about 650.
He says that the parts of the Koran that are written on this parchment can, with a degree of confidence, be dated to less than two decades after Muhammad's death.
These portions must have been in a form that is very close to the form of the Koran read today, supporting the view that the text has undergone little or no alteration and that it can be dated to a point very close to the time it was believed to be revealed.
The manuscript, written in Hijazi script, an early form of written Arabic, becomes one of the oldest known fragments of the Koran.
Because radiocarbon dating creates a range of possible ages, there is a handful of other manuscripts in public and private collections which overlap. So this makes it impossible to say that any is definitively the oldest.
But the latest possible date of the Birmingham discovery - 645 - would put it among the very oldest.
'Precious survivor' Dr Waley, curator for such manuscripts at the British Library, said these two folios, in a beautiful and surprisingly legible Hijazi hand, almost certainly date from the time of the first three caliphs.
The first three caliphs were leaders in the Muslim community between about 632 and 656. Dr Waley says that under the third caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, copies of the definitive edition were distributed.
The Muslim community was not wealthy enough to stockpile animal skins for decades, and to produce a complete Mushaf, or copy, of the Holy Koran required a great many of them.
Dr Waley suggests that the manuscript found by Birmingham is a precious survivor of a copy from that era or could be even earlier. In any case, this - along with the sheer beauty of the content and the surprisingly clear Hijazi script - is news to rejoice Muslim hearts.
The manuscript is part of the Mingana Collection of more than 3,000 Middle Eastern documents gathered in the 1920s by Alphonse Mingana, a Chaldean priest born near Mosul in modern-day Iraq.
He was sponsored to take collecting trips to the Middle East by Edward Cadbury, who was part of the chocolate-making dynasty.
Muslims believe the words of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by the angel Gabriel over 22 years from 610.

Begging on the streets of Birmingham
Begging is becoming a common sight in cities across the UK. This video shows some times I've been approached by beggars while driving but how do you spot the real from the fake? As you can see in the links below, some professional beggars earn over £2000 a week (tax free) while the real ones in need suffer. What would you do in these situations?
This video is not for or against begging and I have every sympathy with those that genuinely find themselves homeless through no fault of their own; it could happen to any of us. I made this video to show new drivers the kind of situations that you can find yourself in that you may not have thought about or been prepared for. Thinking about what you could do in advance should this situation arise makes you better prepared to make rational decisions if they happen.

What Did They Capture Flying In The Sky Above Birmingham UK?
What did they capture flying in the sky above Birmingham UK? In this video we see an object hovering in the sky, is it a sky serpent or a kite?
This video was posted on the 8th of May by Birmingham skies. The video was taken in North Birmingham which is located in England’s West Midlands region. During the video we can see what appears to be a serpent like creature hovering in the sky. Not much information has been provided but the UK is known to be a UFO hotspot. Thousands of unidentified flying objects are reported in the UK every year. Some of which remain unexplained. It's not just UFO's that are seen here in the UK. Dragons have also been reported by people. A handful of alleged dragon sightings are reported annually and this could be the case with this clip.
The original poster suggests that the footage could show a sky serpent or a kite. Take a look at the footage and let me know what you think it is.
Thank you for watching!

London-Birmingham: First time riding a train in the UK
London-Birmingham is a very common route of train in the UK. The train departs London Euston station and after several stops arrives at Birmingham New Street.
Virgin has the fastest trains, but we purchased our tickets with Chiltern, as they had better prices. The trip was about 1 hour longer, but the train was comfortable and had free wifi.
Birmingham is the first city we will visit in the UK. It will be featured in the next vlog.

Birmingham City Centre Gardens
On Friday 18th. May 2018 I visited a small Oasis in the Desert, the Birmingham City Centre Gardens for the first time. The Rhododendrons & Lilac trees were quite beautiful so I captured a short video to share with you & having checked the only other video on YouTube featuring this spot I now hope to correct your impression of these gardens. To enhance this video, I chose an uptempo piece of music titled LOVE NOW by an artist I had not heard before namely Eveningland so many thanks for that.

Sentencing Of The Birmingham Jihadi Terror Cell
CNN's Dan Rivers recounts the evidence against a British terror ring convicted of planning a big attack in the UK.

Birmingham's Muslim community did not inform police of terrorism plot
No-one in the Birmingham bomb plotters' own community tipped the police off with their concerns, despite finding out they were sending young men to terror training camps in Pakistan ... But at no point during the 18-month investigation by the West Midlands counter-terrorism unit did anyone in Birmingham's Muslim community inform on the behaviour of Irfan Naseer, Irfan Khalid and Ashik Ali, raising questions over the health of relations between officers and community leaders ... Detective Inspector Adam Gough, senior investigating officer, said the extended families of the four men had become aware of why they went to Pakistan but, in any case, did not tell us.
Three convicted of plotting terror attack 'bigger than 7/7'
Ashik Ali, Ifran Khalid and Ifran Naseer, all from Birmingham, England, were convicted at Woolwich Crown Court on 12 counts of committing acts in preparation for a terrorist attack. The three men planned to set off up to eight backpack bombs in crowded areas, and had traveled to a terror training camp in Pakistan for expert training and preparation, the court heard during a 14-week trial. Had they not been stopped, the consequences would have been catastrophic, said Karen Jones, a specialist counter-terrorism prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service. These men had dangerous aspirations.
Terror trial begins in Britain
Three men accused of plotting a suicide bombing campaign in Britain went on trial Monday. If authorities hadn't foiled the plan, the scale of the terrorist attack might have been bigger than the 2005 London bombings that killed more than 50 people, prosecutor Brian Altman said. One of the alleged jihadists described the plot as another 9/11, he said. Irfan Naseer, Irfan Khalid and Ashik Ali were arrested in September 2011 in what authorities called a major operation...
Special report: Female genital mutilation - unreported, ignored and unpunished (independent, Jan 6, 2013)
The failure to punish anyone for carrying out female genital mutilation (FGM) in almost a decade since Labour introduced a new law designed to stamp out the practice is forcing prosecutors to seek alternative methods to tackle the problem. The Government was facing growing criticism from campaigners after an Independent on Sunday investigation into the horrifying practice known as cutting, in which the genitals of women and girls are severed ... Keir Starmer, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), told The Independent on Sunday last night that he and Justice Department officials are considering plans to use child-protection legislation to prosecute those who mutilate women, girls and babies. The IoS inquiry revealed that hundreds of hospitals, councils and police forces are failing to enforce the law designed to stop the agonising procedure...
Extremism unchecked in schools, secret briefing reveals (telegraph, Dec 31, 2012)
More than 100 independent faith schools may be radicalising students, the Department of Education has warned in a secret memo which admits that officials are struggling to tackle extremism in state and private schools ... But behind closed doors there are concerns about 118 socially conservative independent faith schools - the vast majority of them Muslim - where pupils may be encouraged to cut themselves off from mainstream society. Ministers have been told they do not have detailed information about the religious orientation of the groups and movements behind all independent faith schools. And officials have privately admitted that they also have no system in place to identify institutional extremism in state schools, the Daily Telegraph has learned...
