Winter Builds Rare Icy Path To Lake Superior Ice Caves
Crowds of people are flocking to northwestern Wisconsin to trek on a frozen-over Lake Superior to reach dramatic ice caves accessible on foot for the first time in several years, courtesy of the long frigid winter. It has been five years since the ice caves were last reachable in the winter, officials said. About 35,000 people have hiked the more than 1 mile route across the ice in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore since officials declared the ice a low risk on January 15, park spokeswoman Julie Van Stappen said. Still, the number of visitors was expected to surge over the three-day Presidents Day weekend, boosting tourist activity in such towns as Bayfield, about 18 miles west of the caves.

Droves of people are braving the cold to hike a frozen Lake Superior to see dramatic ice caves in no
This winter's relentless cold is not keeping an unprecedented number of people from trekking on a frozen Lake Superior to view the ice caves in northern Wisconsin. Julie Van Stappen, Chief of Planning and Resource Management at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, says since they deemed the caves accessible Jan. 15 more than 35,000 have hiked to the caves. She described it as unprecedented.
The last time they were accessible was in February 2009, when about 8,500 people visited in the first month. She says social media is playing a bigger part this year in getting the word.
She says because it's been so cold for so long a lot of the clear and blue ice formations have remained, rather than melting and reforming into cloudy ice. Other highlights include orangish-pink formations, from the sandstone eroding as well as delicate frost.

Majestic Ice Caves are the Ultimate Winter Wonderland
The people of Wisconsin have a reason to actually be grateful for this winter's frigid temperatures this weekend.
The breathtaking ice caves of the Apostle Islands off Lake Superior will be open for brave members of the public to visit. Even if you're sick of winter, you have to admit that ice caves are pretty cool.
The sea caves are a popular destination for kayakers during warmer months, but after Lake Superior freezes, they're not so easy to get to.

Lake Superior's Lava Legacy: An Introduction
This video explores Lake Superior's extraordinary, ancient volcanic history and serves as an introduction to a learning module on the topic developed by Hamline University's Center for Global Environmental Education. Featuring geologist Jim Miller, the video connects current eruptions in Hawai'i and plate tectonics in Iceland with millions of years of volcanic activity that happened via North America's mid-continental rift a billion years ago.
