Kanamara P*nis Festival Exposed ★ ONLY in JAPAN
★ Special Episode ★ This festival will next be held on Sunday, April 5 2020. Here's a preview with all the background you'll need.
Japan's Kanamara Matsuri as you've never seen it before!
Every now and then something very bizarre from Japan pops up in the news. This time, it happens to be bright pink and carried around the streets of a town near Tokyo. The Kanamara Matsuri / Festival is definitely unusual but there is much more to this story including a strong historical backbone and religious significance.
So – WHY #JAPAN ?!?! WHY ?!?
The international media sees the images and write the stories but never ask the questions. Let me do that for you in this episode.
The festival sometimes dubbed the “Penis” festival or the Utamaro Festival has a long history going back 200 years.
It was created by a transgender salon in Asakusa called Elizabeth who wanted to bring attention to the issue of STD, HIV / AIDS and the LGBT community. They succeeded in getting a lot of attention but over the last several years, the message has gotten lost in the shock and -- bright pink of their hand made phallus. Whatever you may think about Elizabeth, there is no doubt that it is the most photographed mikoshi in Japan!
Kanamara #Shrine is dedicated to both fertility and a place for prayer for women afflicted by sexual diseases. It's a place women go to today to pray to get pregnant and for a healthy child.
Those who have been unfortunate to contract a STD have been coming here for centuries. The priests approach those afflicted with a lot of compassion. Kanamara Shrine is certainly one that opens its arms to anyone and everyone who is suffering and that compassion is admirable.
In recent years, the worldwide media attention has been overwhelming skewed on the weird and the Kanamara Matsuri has become something of a joke and embarrassment in many Japanese eyes. I really hope that this episode can help shed light on the cultural, historical and religious significance of this festival in Japan today. It's more than a gag, a comedy piece.
Parental Guidance suggested:
Because viewers of the shows come from all different backgrounds and ages, I highly recommend anyone under 13 have a parent watch with them. There are no actual body parts shown but I know the material is sensitive for parents; and parents should be the ones making the decision if this should be seen or not. I added a rating at the opening for this purpose.
Where is Kanamara Shrine?
Here's a Google Map:
Address: 2-13-16 Daishi Ekimae, Kawasaki Ward, Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture 210-0802
How to get to the Kanamara Matsuri:
Station: Kawasakidaishi Station / 川崎大師
Take the JR LINE to Kawasaki Station then change to the Keikyu Dashi Line, a 50 meter walk from JR. Take the train 3 stops, 140 Yen.

The Kanamara Festival (Festival of the Steel Phallus) at Kanayama Shrine in Kawasaki features phallic images in everything from the decorations to snacks (as well as your regular festival food). There is also a mikoshi (portable shrine) parade of numerous giant phalli around noon. Men in drag carry the pink ‘Elizabeth Mikoshi’, donated by a drag queen club called Elizabeth.
Kanayama Shrine was popular with women workers from the local tea houses who prayed for protection from sexually transmitted diseases.
The festival started in 1969.Today, the festival has become something of a tourist attraction and is used to raise money for HIV research.

Penis Festival of Japan Takes Over Kawasaki
The annual Shinto Kanamara Matsuri, or the Festival of the Steel Phallus recently took over the streets of Kawasaki, Japan. The 39-year-old festival is held to honor fertility and male genitals. The festival is rooted in a 17th Century tale of a sharp toothed demon who falls in love with a beautiful woman. The woman is eventually freed after a steel phallus destroys the demons teeth, vanquishing the demon forever. Today the festival raises awareness about safe sex and raises funds for HIV prevention. Elliot Hill and Joya Mia Italiano take a closer look inside the phallic festival on the Lip News.

The Kawasaki Warehouse is an amazing arcade that's modeled after the Forbidden City, Kowloon. It's delighted gamers for years but unfortunately, it's permanently closing on November 17th, so I decided to pay a visit and play their games for one last time.

Origin of the Kanamara Matsuri Phallus Festival [Visitation Guide]
The Kanamara Festival is an ancient ritual held at the Kanayama Shrine in Kawasaki, one hour by train from Tokyo, Japan. It holds both the meanings of its original purpose of praying to bear children, for safe birth, and for protection from sexual disease, as well as a new purpose of raising awareness of the importance of sexuality and to pray for protection from HIV and AIDS.
[WARNING: Contents of this video are considered sexual in nature and should not be viewed by those under 13]
With more and more foreign guests than ever each year, the festival continually runs the risk of bad attendee behavior and being misunderstood. Watch this video to get an understanding of the history and meaning of the festival BEFORE you go!!

Walking in central Kawasaki, Japan - 4K 60FPS
Kawasaki is a city of roughly 1,5 million residents located in Kanagawa Prefecture. In fact, it only takes about 20 minutes by train to travel here from central Tokyo.
Kawasaki is sandwiched between Tokyo and Yokohama, the two largest cities in Japan and part of the Greater Tokyo Area - The largest metropolitan area in the world.
In this video I'm exploring some of the shopping and entertainment districts around Kawasaki Station.
While shooting this I realized that I really need to come back here again at night soon. During the daytime this is not the most exciting place in Japan, but it has the potential to be very pretty once its lit up. Rest assured that such a video will be coming soon.
This was filmed in November 2018 with a Fujifilm X-T3 in 4K 60FPS. The lens used is a Laowa 9mm f2.8, and the camera was mounted on a Zhiyun Crane for stability.
Shot in F-Log and graded in Adobe Premiere CC.

Why Penis is worshiped in Bhutan?
Most of the penises painted on houses or suspended from rooftops in Bhutan are larger than humans. They come in various sizes, color schemes and embellishments. Some have ribbons tied around them like jovial holiday presents. Others are coiled by daunting dragons. A few even have eyes. They typically feature hairy testicles, from the neatly trimmed to full-on Yeti-style. And, of course, all are fully erect.
There are many story related to Drukpa Kunley's act of sexuality.

Walking around Niigata, Japan. Asus Zenfone 5Z, 4K 60FPS
Niigata (新潟市) is the biggest city in Japan that faces the Japan Sea. The city has approximately 800 000 residents, and is the capital of Niigata Prefecture. Travelling here from Tokyo takes roughly 2,5 hours with the Shinkansen high-speed train.
In this video I start at the coast, at a look-out spot facing the sea. From there I walk down to the central parts of the city.
This video was filmed on a weekday in June 2018 with a Asus Zenfone 5Z in 4K resolution and 60 FPS framerate, using a DJI Osmo Mobile 2 handheld gimbal.
