A road trip in Alentejo (Portugal)
A few weeks ago I went on a road trip in Alentejo. This is probably the most beautiful region of Portugal. The landscape of Alentejo is stunning: cliffs, lonely trees, and the fierce Atlantic Ocean. I traveled extensively around Alentejo: Zambujeira do Mar, Elvas, Vila de Milfontes, Evora, Sines, Evoramonte, Estremoz, to name but a few.

Evora - Portugal Travel Channel
Evora, located in the heart of Portugal - the Alentejo region - was already inhabited in the Neolithic period. Evora was extended during the colonization of Portugal by the Romans. A huge viaduct, the castle and the beautiful Diana Temple are surviving memorials of this period. Later the Moors enlarged the castle and built a mosque.
Geraldo Geraldes the Fearless (Geraldo Sem Pavor) conquered Evora for King Afonso Henriques. The Moors were finally expelled with the support of the order of knights of the Avis. In 1166, the Avis made Évora their initial seat and named the order of knights Évora. A still largely preserved wall had been built to protect the town. Since the 12th century Portugal's kings were crowned in Évora. The town blossomed out to a centre of the humanism. In 1973 the University - founded in 1559 - was reopened after being closed in 1759. Évora had lost influence after the affiliation to Spain.
Other attractions include the Sé Cathedral, Palace of the Dukes of Cadaval and the Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos).
Since 1986 Évora belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Dolmens of Wild Alentejo, Portugal
Exploring the ancient history of the Alentejo region in the south of Portugal for the Wild Guide Portugal book out 3rd April 2017.
Here's a sneaky peak at one of our guidebook's listing below:
Anta do Tapadão
One of the most beautiful dolmens in Portugal, it rises up on a gentle incline to survey the sweeping fields. A truly mega dolmen, it opens into a hollow mound with a great stone rolled over its entrance. You can carefully crawl underneath. About 3,000 BC.
From Aldeia da Mata take the N363 Crato road for 1km. There is a sign to the dolmen and a gate into the paddock. Park by side of road. Walk in, shut the gate for the cattle and follow track.

Wandervideo: Évora - Portugal
One of Portugal’s most beautifully preserved medieval towns, Évora is an enchanting place to delve into the past. Inside the 14th-century walls, Évora’s winding lanes lead to striking architectural works: a medieval cathedral and cloisters; the cinematic columns of the Templo Romano (near the intriguing Roman baths); and a picturesque town square, once the site of some rather gruesome episodes courtesy of the Inquisition. Aside from its historic and aesthetic virtues, Évora is also a lively university town, and its many attractive restaurants serve up hearty Alentejan cuisine. Outside of town, Neolithic monuments and rustic wineries make for fine day trips.
Évora climbs a gentle hill above the Alentejo plain. Around the walled centre runs a ring road from which you can enter the town on one of several ‘spoke’ roads. The town’s focal point is Praça do Giraldo, 700m from the bus station to the southwest.
--------------------------------

Travelling through Monsaraz
Discovering Alentejo. Monsaraz is a beautiful village which deserves a visit.
I love to walk around Portugal and discover new and unexpected places. Thus, I decided to explore the unknown Alentejo Region and specifically the village of Monsaraz.
Indeed, Monsaraz is one of those places that deserves a long visit. And we can understand that briefly: reaching the village, there is an imposing and welcoming door that allows the access to the village – the Door Village. It almost seems an old painting.
Monsaraz is an unusual place in Alentejo that makes us to return to ancient times: it is a historical spot, walled and medieval. This village dates from the prehistoric era and the megalithic monuments is a physical evidence of that.
And, of course, the iconic Monsaraz Castle. This castle was built by the Portuguese kings Afonso III and Dinis. The access to this walled castle is made via four doors: the Door of the Village, the Door of the Hole, the Door of Alcobaça and the Door of Évora.

- Source: Wikipedia
The Roman Temple of Évora, also referred to as the Templo de Diana (albeit wrongly, after Diana, the ancient Roman goddess of the moon, the hunt, and chastity) is an ancient temple in the Portuguese city of Évora (civil parish of Sé e São Pedro).
The temple is part of the historical centre of the city, which was included in the classification by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
It represents one of the most significant landmarks relating to the Roman and Lusitanian civilizations of Évora and in Portuguese territory.
The temple is located in the central square of Évora, in what would have been the highest elevation of the city's acropolis. It is surrounded by religious buildings associated with the Inquisition in Portugal, including: the Sé Cathedral, the Palace of the Inquisitor, Palace of the Dukes of Cadaval, the Court of the Inquisition and, the Church and Lóios' Convent, as well as the Public Library and Museum of Évora. - Source: Wikipedia
