Grand Canyon Grand Canyon National Park
Located in northwest Arizona and arguably the world's most popular (and splendid) natural tourist attraction, the massive Canyon is 277 miles long, 18 miles wide, and at its deepest point, is more than a mile from rim to river. Most of the Canyon lies within Grand Canyon National Park and is managed by the National Park Service. It incorporates three geographically separated areas: the South Rim, the North Rim and the inner canyon.

River Trip 11: Grand Canyon - Native American Perspectives
Loretta Jackson-Kelly of the Hualapai Tribe, Roland Manakaja of the Havasupai Tribe and Leigh J. Kuwanwisiwma of the Hopi Tribe, talk about the significance of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River, and ask boaters to treat what has been created with respect.
The Grand Canyon
The most powerful force to have an impact on the Grand Canyon is erosion, primarily by water (and ice) and second by wind. Other forces that contributed to the Canyon's formation are the course of the Colorado River itself, vulcanism, continental drift and slight variations in the earths orbit which in turn causes variations in seasons and climate.

At 3,000 vertical feet (880 m)
above the Colorado River,
the sheer drop from
Toroweap Overlook
offers a dramatic view.
The volcanic cinder cones
and lava flows in this ancestral
home of the Southern Paiute
people make this area unique.
A visit to Tuweep provides an
opportunity for an uncrowded,
rustic, and remote experience.
Access is challenging and
demands skill at
negotiating difficult roadways.
Summer brings monsoonal rain
and lightning. Winter includes
rain, snow, and freezing temperatures.
Be ready for quickly
changing conditions.
Need to Know
There is no water available.
Fires and charcoal grills prohibited.
No hunting or collecting.
No drones, wingsuits, or base jumping.
Preparedness and Directions
Flat tires are most frequent on smooth,
graded sections of roadway hiding
unseen fractured, sharp, limestone.
Travel slowly, 30 mph (50 kph) or less,
to avoid flat tires.
Carry extra water, food,
and warm clothing.
Due to rapidly changing conditions,
be equipped to spend the night.
During monsoon season, visit in
the morning before
the afternoon storms.
Flooding may occur when the
chance of precipitation is as low
as 10 percent. During muddy
winter conditions, travel when
routes are frozen and overnight
temperatures below 20°F (-7°C).
What to Experience
Watch Your Step! For your safety,
as well as the protection of a
delicate ecosystem, be careful where
you step and drive. A 3000-foot (915 m)
drop is one concern.
The less obvious micro-biotic crusts
are another; they hold soil and plant
nutrients in place and can
be easily damaged.
When exploring on foot, please stay
on trails, roads, washes, or rock
surfaces to protect the crusts and
avoid damaging native plants.
Toroweap Overlook: Dramatically
different than other Grand Canyon
viewpoints, Toroweap Overlook peers
out over an abrupt gorge set in a
broad corridor 3,000 feet (915 m)
below the rim.
Eight, million-year-old lava flows
and conical black cinder cones
stud the landscape.
Walk to the edge for a
breath-taking experience.
To the west, view the largest rapid
on nearly 300 miles (485 km)
of the park’s Colorado River.
Listen carefully for the roar of the
river or the faint sounds
from boaters below.
To the east, enjoy dramatic views.
Tuweep Hiking Trails: Two established
hiking trails can be accessed
from Tuweep. Their trailheads are
signed and cairns (piles of rock)
mark their path.
Plan ahead for your hike and
remember that shade is scarce
and water non-existent.
All trails are closed to
pets, bicycles, and vehicles.
Tuckup Trail: The Tuckup Trail
gives hikers a spectacular taste
of Esplanade slick-rock on a
former prospector’s path.
Follow the trail 3 miles (5 km) to
Cove Canyon and experience an
inner-canyon day hike rewarded
with endless views.
Access the Tuckup Trailhead north
of Tuweep Campground
or, if camping, from site 10.
Saddle Horse Loop Trail:
This 45-minute loop offers spectacular
views of the Colorado River,
as well as a colorful walk through
the native plant gardens protected
and nourished by beautiful displays
of micro-biotic crusted soils.
Every inch of crusted toppings signifies
10-years of growth and erosion.
Imagine what the landscape would
look like without these living organisms
doing their job. Access the trail along
the road between Toroweap Overlook
and Tuweep Campground or from
a trailhead near campsite 5.

visiting Grand Canyon National Park on a very cold and windy october day with amazing rainbow
on a vacation in the united states, visiting the grand canyon. we arrived with a temperature just above freezing, with snow. because of the strong winds in the canyon area, in the early afternoon the cloud were slowly blowed away. with some rainshowers and a strong wind left, we got an amazing view of the canyon, with a very nice Rainbow a couple hundred feet below us. when the rain shower was stronger, we were able to see a triple Rainbow. a cold but perfect visit to the grand canyon.

Ep. #121 Grand Canyon, Arizona
Family trip to the Grand Canyon, October 3, 2009.
The Grand Canyon, located in the state of Arizona, is considered by some to be one of the seven wonders of the world, due to its sensational decorative colors and majestic natural beauty. It measures 18 miles wide (29 km), 277 miles (446 km) long, and a mile (1.6 km) deep.
The area is encompassed by over one million acres (or over 1,900 square miles). To put it into perspective, the island of Manhattan, which is nearly 34 Square miles, would be able to fit in the Grand Canyon Park nearly 58 times. The Park has three main sections the South Rim, North Rim, and the Inner Canyon .

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK 1940s SANTA FE RAILROAD PROMOTIONAL FILM 63994
Made in the late 1930s or early 1940s by the Santa Fe Railroad, GRAND CANYON GLIMPSES promotes travel to one of the United States' premiere National Parks. The film is silent and would likely have been shown with narration by a Park Ranger or other knowledgeable person at one of the Fred Harvey hotels along the Santa Fe's route. At 1:40 the view of the Canyon from the Watchtower is shown. At 2:58, a group descends into the canyon on horseback or on mules on the Bright Angel Trail. At 4:00, they arrive at the Phantom Ranch on the bottom of the Canyon. The Black Suspension Bridge also known as the Kaibab Suspension Bridge is shown. This spans the Colorado River in the inner canyon of Grand Canyon National Park. It is part of the South Kaibab Trail and is the river crossing used by mules going to Phantom Ranch. The Black Bridge and Silver Bridge, located about 700 meters downstream, are the only spans in hundreds of river miles.
At 5;13 the Phantom Ranch is seen more fully. At 6:30 a trip up Bright Angel Canyon to Ribbon Falls and then back up to the South Rim. At 9:25 the Havasu Falls are shown on the Havasupai Indian / Supai Indian Reservation. At 12:00 a white teacher guides 43 Indian Children in Havasu Canyon School. The film ends with footage of a storm racing across the Canyon.
Phantom Ranch is a lodge inside Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. It is on the north side of the Colorado River near its confluence with Bright Angel Creek and Phantom Creek. Built in 1922, Phantom Ranch is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The road to the Grand Canyon from the south crosses a gently rising plateau that gives no hint at what is about to unfold. You wonder if you have made a wrong turn. All at once an immense gorge a mile deep and up to 18 miles wide opens up. The scale is so vast that even from the best vantage point only a fraction of the canyon's 277 miles can be seen.
Nearly five million people travel here each year; 90 percent first see the canyon from the South Rim with its dramatic views into the deep inner gorge of the Colorado River. So many feet have stepped cautiously to the edge of major overlooks that in places the rock has been polished smooth. But most of the park's 1,904 square miles are maintained as wilderness. You can avoid crowds by hiking the park's many trails or driving to the cool evergreen forests of the North Rim where people are fewer and viewing is more leisurely. The Grand Canyon boasts some of the nation's cleanest air, with visibility on clear days averaging 90 to 110 miles.
You don't need a ranger to guide you through the park, thanks to the cell phone audio tours available at popular sites throughout the park. Look for the Park Ranger Audio Tour signs, call +1 928 225 2907, and enter the stop number. These two-minute narrated tidbits offer glimpses into the geology, history, and more, and can even be downloaded onto an mp3 player or iPhone.
