The Cook Straits Interislander ferry from Wellington to Picton underwent an extremely rough crossing in March 2006. Many vehicles were severely damaged but a 1969 VW camper van survived unmarked!

Today we are leaving Wellington and the North Island and heading to the South Island on the Cook Strait Ferry between Wellington and Picton! It’s time for the New Zealand ferry crossing!
We take an early morning sailing from Wellington with Interislander. We check into the Interislander Ferry, park up and start exploring the Interislander ferry for the New Zealand ferry crossing.
We choose one of the multiple viewing decks to watch Wellington turn into a tiny dot in the distance. Then we are on the Cook Strait – the body of water between the North Island and South Island.
After checking out The Bridge with Interislander – something you have to be invited to do (it’s not included in a ferry ticket) – we head back onto the viewing deck as we enter the stunning Marlborough Sounds as part of the ferry between Wellington and Picton.
This is the highlight of the Cook Strait Ferry between the North Island and South Island with some incredible views.
The North Island to South Island ferry arrives in Picton where we can officially say we have reached the South Island! We relax on the Picton Waterfront and enjoy the relaxed pace of life here in Picton.

We drove a motorhome across the Cook Strait - not really, we brought it on a ferry. We used Bluebridge Ferries because there was a coupon code - but it was still expensive (mostly because of how long our rig was). We boarded the ferry from Wellington to Picton!
PS: Next time we'll try out the Interislander!

Interislander Piction to Wellington NZ
This was my first time on the Interislander and i just had to share my experience (the views). The date was the 8th Feb 2014. I was on the Arahura, and it left Piction roughly around 7pm. The Arahura arrived in Wellington around 10.30pm - Just after the sevens final!
This is not a plug for the Interislander btw. lol.
for those who just never been across the cook strait, this is what you would expect to see.
The weather was kinda rubbish but the results was just astonishing.

Interislander is the Cook Strait Ferry from Wellington & Picton crossing between the North & South Islands of New Zealand.
I have booked all of my tickets through New Zealand Travel information centre at the airport.
Intercity Bus from Wellington from Auckland, then the Ferry ticket then the Coastal pacific Train ticket to Christchurch.
Nice trip all in all top marks for the New Zealand travel advice centre and transport connections between both islands.
