Suffice it to say, there are plenty of activities and sights that can keep visitors busy in the city.
If you are wondering what to do in Ipoh, here are some of the top things you shouldn’t miss out on:
Spelunking
If you want to do Ipoh right, you should definitely stop at the caves of Gua Tempering that will take you through winding, dark and cool caves stretching over 1.86 miles. This is a favorite for nature enthusiasts, spelunkers and those who just want to see some must-see places in the city. The beautiful stalactite and limestone formations are enhanced with electrical lighting that has been used to rig the caves. The cave tours are set up as a challenge to visitors, which means you should be prepared to crawl through the river, wriggle through small gaps and shimmy, jump and slide through formations.
Nature on display
Gunung Lang is a beautiful park that continues to explore the limestone caves as well as the mountains towering above. Water activities and eco-tourism are quite popular, thanks to the Park’s man-made waterfall, gorgeous lake and beautiful coastline. You can take a boat ride in the afternoon with an experienced pilot or just take a picnic lunch and sit on the grass.
Riverside
It is easy to miss the Kinta Riverfront Walk and the only way to experience it is to walk it. This is incredibly easy to do and a lot of fun as well because the trees are illuminated by beautiful lights and the water is hitting the walk’s edge. It is easy to take a stroll on the Riverwalk, but it is just as fun when you ride on the bike. After you have enjoyed the breeze and the lights, you can go to any of the various restaurants that can be found along the walk.
Colonial charm
The British had a very strong influence during the tin mining boom in Perak. When you visit Ipoh, you can enjoy the colonial legacy with stunning structures, such as the Birch Clock Tower Railway Station, Ipoh Town Hall and the Old Post Office.
With these activities, you will be able to take in the beauty that Ipoh has to offer to its tourists and locals.

Official launch of SJK(C) Gunong Hijau, Pusing New Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Administrative Building
Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO and Menteri Besar Perak YAB Dato’ Seri Ahmad Faizal Dato’ Azumu, today launched SJK(C) Gunong Hijau’s new Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Administrative Building.
The new administrative building is an expansion of a three-storey building named after the school Board of Governors chairman, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, which was completed in 2003. The new expansion and school upgrading amounted to a total of RM1 million, which was funded by JCF and the school. The construction of the 7,300 sq ft administrative building commenced in early 2018 and was completed late last year.
The new administrative building will house a bigger staff room, admin offices, additional meeting rooms, a computer lab and a library. Since 1997, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah and JCF have donated RM5 million to the school’s development and enhancement.
Established in 1907, the more than a century-old Chinese primary school is the larger of the only two primary schools in the small town of Pusing and supports close to two-thirds of Pusing’s entire primary school-going population. SJK(C) Gunong Hijau currently has more than 500 students and teachers.
In his speech, YAB Dato’ Seri Ahmad commended Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah’s commitment to sustainably progress his home state.
“Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah’s single-minded dedication to sustainably progress Perak is an example to all. The integrated green township of Sunway City Ipoh has contributed to Perak’s socio-economic growth for decades. It has created thousands of jobs, contributed to Perak’s economic wealth through tourism, protected Perak’s natural resources, and improved lives for the people of Perak by leaps and bounds. His many contributions to schools in Perak has ensured that thousands of school children have the education they need to create a better future for themselves,” said Dato’ Seri Ahmad.
In a heartfelt speech, the school Board of Governor’s deputy chairman and organising chairman, Dato’ Lee Kon Yin said, “It would not be exaggeration to say that Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah’s family has been the biggest contributor to Pusing’s survival post the collapse of the tin-mining industry in the early 1980s.”
“Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah’s father, Dato’ Cheah Fah started in the 80s with building a staircase connection from old canteen library. Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah continued on this tradition by building a multipurpose hall for the school in 1998, three-storey building for classrooms in 2003, and following that, a new administrative block for us.”
“Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah had been very committed to help our school since 1997, and since then has donated RM5 million, of which the latest funding came from JCF. In a small town like Pusing, which had experienced dramatic socio-economic deterioration post the tin-mining era; good education is of extreme importance. Without good education, some of the children of Pusing who need it the most will not be able to escape the cycle of poverty,” he added.
The Pusing-born Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah is the founder of one of Malaysia’s largest conglomerate, Sunway Group which has a combined market capitalisation of close to RM14.5 billion.
In 2010, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah established The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation which continues the mandate of the Sunway Education Trust which was established in 1997. The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation has disbursed a total of more than RM400 million in scholarships as of 2018, and has donated close to RM20 million for school upgrades to seven schools nationwide benefitting tens of thousands of students across the country.
Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah has been named Asia’s Heroes of Philanthropy by Forbes magazine twice, and last year, New York Times has attributed Ipoh’s tourism transformation to Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah.

SUMMARY
=======
The State of Penang, one of the most developed and urbanised Malaysian states, is located at the nation's northwest coast along the Malacca Strait. Unlike most Malaysian states, the history of modern Penang was shaped by British colonialism, beginning with the acquisition of Penang Island from the Sultanate of Kedah by the British East India Company in 1786. Developed into a free port, the city state was subsequently governed as part of the Straits Settlements, together with Singapore and Malacca; the state capital, George Town, briefly became the capital of this political entity between 1826 and 1832. By the end of the 19th century, George Town prospered and became one of the major entrepôts in Southeast Asia.
During World War II, Penang was conquered and occupied by the Japanese Empire from 1941 to 1945. At the end of the war, Penang was also the first state in the Malay Peninsula to be liberated by the British, under Operation Jurist. The Straits Settlements was dissolved in the following year and Penang was merged into the Federation of Malaya. In spite of a secessionist movement within Penang, the merger with Malaya went ahead and the federation attained independence from the British Empire in 1957. Malaya later evolved into the present-day Malaysia in 1963.
Following the revocation of George Town's free port status in the 1960s, the state suffered economic decline and massive unemployment. The state government at the time led a push to reorient the economy towards hi-tech manufacturing, successfully recovering Penang's economy and lending the state its moniker the 'Silicon Valley of the East'. Growing recognition of George Town as a bustling tourist destination, particularly since the city's inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, also boosted the state's services sector, and today, both the manufacturing and services sectors are the two strongest economic pillars of Penang. Moreover, the state enjoys one of the lowest unemployment rates and Gini coefficients within Malaysia, as well as the second highest gross domestic product (GDP) per capita within the country after Kuala Lumpur.

SUMMARY
=======
A suburb is a mixed-use or residential area, existing either as part of a city or urban area or as a separate residential community within commuting distance of a city. In most English-speaking countries, suburban areas are defined in contrast to central or inner-city areas, but in Australian English and South African English, suburb has become largely synonymous with what is called a neighborhood in other countries and the term extends to inner-city areas. In some areas, such as Australia, India, China, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and parts of the United States and Canada, new suburbs are routinely annexed by adjacent cities. In others, such as Saudi Arabia, France, and much of the United States and Canada, many suburbs remain separate municipalities or are governed as part of a larger local government area such as a county. In the United States, beyond the suburbs are exurbs, or exurban areas, with less density but linked to the metropolitan area economically and by commuters.
Suburbs first emerged on a large scale in the 19th and 20th centuries as a result of improved rail and road transport, which led to an increase in commuting. In general, they have lower population densities than inner city neighborhoods within a metropolitan area, and most residents commute to central cities or other business districts; however, there are many exceptions, including industrial suburbs, planned communities, and satellite cities. Suburbs tend to proliferate around cities that have an abundance of adjacent flat land.

SUMMARY
=======
The Federated Malay States (FMS) was a federation of four protected states in the Malay Peninsula—Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang—established by the British government in 1895, which lasted until 1946, when they, together with two of the former Straits Settlements (Malacca and Penang) and the Unfederated Malay States, formed the Malayan Union. Two years later, the Union became the Federation of Malaya and finally Malaysia in 1963 with the inclusion of North Borneo (present-day Sabah), Sarawak and Singapore.
The United Kingdom was responsible for foreign affairs and defence of the federation, whilst the states continued to be responsible for their domestic policies. Even so, the British Resident General would give advice on domestic issues, and the states were bound by treaty to follow that advice. The federation had Kuala Lumpur, which was then part of Selangor, as its capital. The first FMS Resident General was Frank Swettenham.
The federation, along with the other Malay states and British possessions of the peninsula, was overrun and occupied by the Japanese during World War II. After the liberation of Malaya following the Japanese surrender, the federation was not restored, but the federal form of government was retained as the principal model for consolidating the separate States as an independent Federation of Malaya and the Federation's later evolution into Malaysia.
