GLOBAL ART FORUM 4: Tehran in the 1970s
Tehran in the 1970s was a hotbed of groundbreaking artistic activity that synthesised thought from Western Modernist movements with Persian culture and tradition. This discussion reunites two key figures from that era to discuss the ways in which Iran's Modernist legacy impacts today's boom in Iranian contemporary art.

Hashti Tehran - TRAILER | Painting with Light: Festival of International Films on Art
The hashti is the area behind the main door in traditional Iranian houses, where arrivals are received before being directed towards either the public courtyards or private quarters. In Hashti Tehran, director Daniel Kötter draws parallels between the hashti and the outskirts of Iran’s capital city of Tehran. He presents them as regulatory spaces that determine what is considered the centre or a periphery; urban or non-urban.
This experimental documentary, produced in collaboration with locals Shadnaz Azizi, Kaveh Rashidzadeh, Amir Tehrani and Pouya Sepehr, examines the effects of urban planning on four very different suburbs outside Tehran: Tochal mountain in the north, the area around Lake Chitgar in the west, the Pardis Town housing project in the east, and the neighbourhood of Nafar Abad in the south. The views of the landscape and off-camera conversations reveal the conflict between the state-sanctioned capitalist drive for privatisation and urban development, and the community’s need for public spaces and natural environs. Hashti Tehran observes how spaces are in fact defined through occupation by people—in this case, at the margins—and not by central administration.
Hashti Tehran has been screened at many festivals worldwide, most notably the Expanded Forum section of the Berlinale (2017). It won the German Shorts Special Award at the Film Festival Cologne (2017) and the Arkipel Award for Best Film at the Documentary and Experimental Film Festival Jakarta (2017).

Fereydoun Ave Rostam's Dream 2009
On Fereydoun Ave from Shulamit Nazarian's gallery: Fereydoun Ave: Postcards from Iranestan
September 10 - October 29, 2015
Opening September 10, 2015
Shulamit Nazarian is pleased to announce two new exhibitions for the fall. Fereydoun Ave, considered the godfather of contemporary Iranian art, will present new work from his ongoing “Rostam” series, in which he explores masculinity and the cultural psyche. In the second gallery, Los Angeles-based artist Sherin Guirguis will unveil a new group of sculptures based on the nuances of heritage, home, and modern conceptions of identity.
Ave, one of the most important figures to emerge from the first generation of contemporary Iranian artists in the 1970s, continues to develop his longstanding mixed-media collage “Rostam” series, in which the artist uses a found magazine clipping of a wrestler from a sports magazine to represent the epic mythological Iranian hero in an attempt to locate and balance the opposing concepts of male chivalry and chauvinism. In this new work, Rostam is given a distinct dynamism as the figure is repeated and overlaid, as if to animate and add dimension to his flattened image. Rostam’s arms, the source of his brawn and the tools of his strength, radiate around him like butterfly’s wings. A mushroom cloud, the contentious symbol of the atomic bomb and the visual marker of its very real devastation, propels Rostam forward. Ave’s acute pairing of images creates a profound visual puzzle, decipherable through the deep reckoning of associations and histories.
Complicated conceptions of Iranian masculinity are further explored in Shah-Abbas and His Page Boy (2015). For this series, Ave daubs hand-sewn patchwork fabrics with paint and other materials in gestures that recall the expressionism of Cy Twombly as well as the evocative ready-mades of Robert Rauschenberg. Ruler of Iran from 1587 to 1629, Shah Abbas ushered in the country’s Golden Age and portrayals of the enlightened but flawed ruler in literature and art often depict his promiscuity—in particular, his brimming harem and proclivity toward young boys—as an illustration of his contradictory lifestyle and values. Ave’s abstractions add a new dimension to that history of representation, as his works are imbued with a surprising intimacy and vulnerability.
Fereydoun Ave (b. 1945 Tehran, Iran) received his BA in Theatre Arts from Arizona State University and studied film at New York University. Ave’s career spans four decades, and his work is held in important collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the British Museum, London; and the Tehran Contemporary Art Museum.

Iranians in Korea hope for deeper bilateral ties
한국 속에 이란
President Park's visit to Iran has been squarely focused on raising business opportunties for both countries... but it appears her landmark trip is resulting in much more.
Iranians in Korea are expecting and hoping that it will also create better cultural understanding and exchange.
Oh Soo-young met with three Iranians who live in the capital of Seoul.
Sourena Behbahani, an Iranian undergraduate student at Sejong University, came to Korea five years ago to study animation.
But his reasons for moving here went beyond education.
He came on a path of self-discovery.
I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and I'd always been interested in East Asian countries. Between Korea, Japan and China, I found Korea the most fascinating.
Behbahani is one of the more than 300 Iranians in Seoul,... here to work, study or settle down.
Adjusting to life here for students like Behbahani involves making new friends, doing his studies in Korean and finishing tough assignments around the clock.
Still, he makes it his priority to support his peers as student president of the animation department.
No one sees Sourena as a foreigner. He's actually more Korean than some. He's dedicated to his responsibilities and is passionate about serving other students.
I received only love and support from my senior classmen and professors. So I wanted to pay forward this love. I would like to help my classmates as much as I can.
Taking his experience and life lessons he learned in Korea, Behbahani hopes to share his story through his animation works.
Animation can be a way to express the emotions I feel, my thoughts on life, my philosophy. I want to return to Iran and share what I've learned in Korea.
Another Iranian student is building up her experience in Korea -- literally -- through a huge textile-art piece.
Sudeh Najafizadeh is here working on her postgraduate degree in textile arts at Hongik University, Korea's most prestigious visual arts university.
To make the work, Najafizadeh put together some of the photos that she's taken during her two years in the country.
I collected my memories here to create a silhouette of my friend.
For her, her friends are everything.
Her Korean friends in Iran were the ones who led her to Seoul, introducing her to Korean food, music and, most of all, her favorite TV dramas.
I was sixteen when I watched my first Korean drama, 'Daejanggeum.' I was fascinated by the story, the food and the interior decor.
Once she decided to experience Korea for herself, Najafizadeh made a great effort to master the language, which she now speaks fluently.
And in the same way she was introduced to Korea, she now wants to share with her friends back home... the country she fell in love with.
I want to be a bridge between Korea and Iran and show Iranians that K-pop and dramas aren't all there is. There is also fine art and culture.
On the eastern side of Seoul, a businessman called Shin Se-jong goes through some numbers.
My Iranian name's Garun. But I've changed my name to Shin Se-jong, after Korea's King Sejong. I'd like to be great like him.
During his sixteen years of living here, Shin is an established member of the Iranian community in Korea.
When I return to Iran, I feel homesick after about ten days. I consider Korea my country now. Though if there's a football match between the two countries, it's Iran all the way. But of course, I root for Korea if it's playing another country.
Shin has built a sturdy business in auto parts, steel and machinery,... and he is keen to promote trade between his two home countries.
Korea has the technology and Iran has natural resources. Doing business in Iran will also open doors to the surrounding countries. I think Korea will profit greatly -- but they need to hurry.
But beyond business partnerships, Shin hopes that cultural ties between Korea and Iran will deepen and that misconceptions will be broken.
Koreans think Iranians are Arabs, but we're Persian. They also think of danger or terrorism, but those are misconceptions. I do think they will fade away through President Park's visit.
There are some 820 Iranians living in Korea, a minority of the foreign population.
But with President Park Geun-hye's trip to Tehran this week, anticipation is high for closer relations, economically, culturally and interpersonally.
