THE GLOWING BIO BAY IN VIEQUES PUERTO RICO
Mosquito Bay or Bio Bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico is an amazing place. It is the brightest glowing bioluminescent bay in the world. I jumped on a few kayak tours during the night of a new moon and saw this incredible light show.
Honestly, it was more amazing that I imagined. I had read a review or two, but wasn't sure if it was worth the trip to the island. It was. The bay is extremely bright, and until now, it was very hard to capture on camera. I recently picked up a Sony a7s which is a beast in low light, and was impressed with that it could capture. This has rarely ever been caught on Camera.
The government is doing a good job at keeping this place pristine. In some areas of the world you can jump in, splash around, use gasoline engines, and generally just destroy the ecosystem these little guys live in. Here in Vieques, Puerto Rico, you are not allowed to swim, or use gasoline. Nearby light pollution has to be kept to a minimum, and there give Bio Bay some days off now and again to recover. This is probably why it remains the brightest in the world. High Five for sustainable eco tourism. I wish everywhere was this forward thinking.
This was one of my best travel experiences. Like I said, it's worth the trip!

Biobay Mosquito Bay on Vieques island, Puerto Rico. Bioluminescent dinoflagellates amazingness
We did a nighttime kayak tour, on an extra dark night due to being near the new moon, on Mosquito Bay on Vieques island, Puerto Rico. The bioluminescent dinoflagellates were indeed absolutely amazing...video can 't come close to capturing it! But I did get some fuzzy footage on high gain, and some glimpses on low gain.

Puerto Rico's Vieques Island
I saw a lot of Vieques Island during the week that I did these photographs. But it's really just a taste of all there is to see and do there. Lying just 8 miles off the Puerto Rico mainland, Vieques may be small in size, but is overly generous in its features. And since it is 21 miles long by 5 miles at it's widest, everything is easy to get to, though I would recommend a jeep.
Imagine visiting 1 or 2 different beautiful beaches every day, and sometimes have the entire beach to yourself.. Picture wild horses all over the island. Choose from lodging that ranges from a hostel to camping on the beach, to ultra luxurious accomodations. Satisfy your appetite at roadside stands or fine dining restaurants.
No casinos. No raucous nightlife. And not a single stoplight.
Hike, scuba, snorkel, boat, fish, ride horseback, shoot trap, kayak on what some say is the world's best bio-luminescent bay, sunbathe, daydream, bike, shop, go shelling, ferry over to the mainland for the rain forest - Or spend a week doing nearly a thousand photos as I did. Enjoy.

My Trip to Vieques, Puerto Rico | All Hands and Hearts | Black Sand Beach | Bioiluminescent Bay | The Lazy Hostel
Going to Vieques was something I wanted to do on my first trip to Puerto Rico and it just didn't work out, but I wasn't going to miss on the second trip and I am so glad that I didn't. The people were so friendly, the weather was beautiful and the beaches were breathtaking. It is also one of the only places you can see not only the bioluminescent bay, but also a black sand beach (Playa Negra).
Volunteering with All Hands and Hearts was a life changing experience. This is my first time on a volunteering project like this and I really learned a lot. It is truly amazing the difference you can make it peoples lives by giving a little bit of your time and effort and the amazing people you can meet along the way.
All Hands and Hearts is a unique company in the sense that they do not require you to pay to volunteer (however, they do ask that you fund raise although it is not mandatory). They really care about their volunteers and the communities they work with.

Vieques (/viːˈeɪkɪs/; Spanish pronunciation: [ˈbjekes], locally [ˈbjẽke]), in full Isla de Vieques, is an island–municipality of Puerto Rico (U.S.) in the northeastern Caribbean, part of an island grouping sometimes known as the Spanish Virgin Islands. Vieques is part of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and retains strong influences from 400 years of Spanish presence in the island.
Vieques lies about 8 miles (13 km) east of the Puerto Rican mainland, and measures about 21 miles (34 km) long by 4 miles (6 km) wide. Its most populated barrio is Isabel Segunda (sometimes written Isabel II), the administrative center on the northern side of the island. The population of Vieques was 9,301 at the 2010 Census.
The island's name is a Spanish spelling of an American Indian word (likely Taíno) said to mean small island. It also has the nickname Isla Nena, usually translated from the Spanish as Little Girl Island, alluding to its perception as Puerto Rico's little sister. During the colonial period, the British name was Crab Island.Hurricane Maria is an extremely powerful tropical cyclone which recently made landfall on Dominica, and is currently threatening the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. The thirteenth named storm, seventh hurricane, fourth major hurricane, and second Category 5 hurricane of the unusually active 2017 Atlantic hurricane season, Maria formed on September 16 out of a tropical wave that was monitored by the National Hurricane Center beginning on September 14. It is the third major hurricane in a row to threaten the Leeward Islands with a direct strike or major impacts within two weeks, after Hurricane Irma caused catastrophic damage there and Jose, then a Category 4 hurricane, passed dangerously close just days after. At 23:30 UTC on September 18, Maria strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane, therefore making the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season the first since 2007 to feature two Category 5 hurricanes, and one of only six Atlantic hurricane seasons to feature two or more Category 5 hurricanes, as well as only the second (after 2007) to feature two hurricanes making landfall at Category 5 intensity.

Puerto Rico Trip Report 7 Days - Old San Juan, Vieques, El Yunque Rain Forest
Our Trip to Puerto Rico was nothing but fun, relaxing and enchanting. Here's what we did during the trip.
Day 1 - Arrive in San Juan and Stay
Day 2 - Drive to Cieba and Fligh to Vieques. Bio Bay Tour. Stay.
Day 3 - Private Snorkeling Trip and Flight back to Cieba. Stay at Rain Forest Home.
Day 4 - El Yunque National Forest
Day 5 - Relaxing day at the Beach
Day 6 - Old San Juan
Day 7 - Flight back home.
Suggestions:
If we were to do this trup again, I recommend spending 2 nights in Vieques Island. One day was too short for this beautiful island.
Old San Juan - We spent about 7 hours. They have a free hop-on ride that gives around the old city. You could ride on that to save time. Parking is underground (kind of hidden near the first El Morro.
We drove in the old city and it was super fun. If you have more time, you can walk on the cobble streets.

In this video, I went to the Island of Vieques, Puerto Rico in 2017, before it was impacted by hurricane Maria. It was a beautiful island in the Caribbean. This is my first video, and also my channel trailer. I hope you enjoyed! Next week we will be eating weird and spicy foods that I find in a oriental market.
