Mariana Trench: Record-breaking journey to the bottom of the ocean - BBC News
An American explorer has descended nearly 11km (seven miles) to the deepest place in the ocean - the Mariana Trench in the Pacific.
Victor Vescovo spent four hours exploring the bottom of the trench with the risk of his submersible imploding if anything were to go wrong.
The dive was later verified to be 10,972m and Victor became the first person to reach the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean.

The man who built the yellow submarine (Written by Simon Johnson)
This is dedicated to my dad who suffers with Alzheimer's.
In his life he was a great inventor of things including his yellow submarine used by the Beatles in 1968 and now in place at the Penny Lane development trust in Liverpool.
My dad, a welder by trade designed and made a fully functioning single man submarine in his back garden in the late 1960s. At the same time the Beatles brought out their yellow submarine song in 1968. I was but a fledgling in my mums stomach at the time.
The promoters of the beatles got wind of my dads creation lurking in the back garden of a non discript street in the darkest corner of North East England and invited him and his yellow submarine down to the film premier to promote the film.
My mum, the only driver in the house-hold at the time at 5 months pregnant with yours truly, drove two hundred miles south in her ford cortina towing my dads infamous yellow submarine behind her, only to be greated by throngs of fans during the crazy film premier. At one point they mobbed the car thinking the beatles might be in there!
They went to the after party and met with the likes of PJ Proby, Mary Hopkins, Mick Jagger and of course the Beatles themselves who turned up ' au retard' drunk and generally behaving in the manner of a typical young band in the height of success.
My dads sub is now in the penny lane museum in Liverpool were he and the sub were resently honoured by the mayor of Liverpool. There is a book published in recognition of him on sale at the penny lane museum.
He also built a 32 foot yacht in his spare time in our back garden.
Enjoy some family photos and extracts from the book on sale in Liverpool.
Dad has been honored by the Mayor of Liverpool and the main photo you see is on the day at the Penny Lane trust development centre.
This is my very personal song to him, to anyone who has a relative with Alzheimer's I hope the song will resinate some of the feelings I have touched upon in this song.
Simon.
Hot Springs Cove, Tofino
6hour adventure where my little guy braved the crazy ocean swells, rewarded by incredible sights of a bald eagle, grey whale, seals, sea lions, porpoises. We then disembarked at the dock of Cove, hiked for about 2km following the historic cedar boardwalk through the enchanting growth of the vast rainforest. Then soaked ourselves in the natural geothermal hot spring pools fed by a cascading waterfall and cooled by gentle swells all with a stunning view of the mighty Pacific Ocean.
This part of Vancouver Island rests on an unstable portion of the earth's crust, known as a fault, associated with intense heat and pressure generated from deep within the earth. The hot spring is a result of a surface water flowing through a fault to a depth of about 5 km. The water is geothermally heated to a temperature of at least 109 degrees Celsius before hydrostatic pressure forces the water back to the surface and discharges through a fractured rock at temperature of about 50 degrees Celsius. ~~ Canadian Geothermal Energy Association
