Hoffman and Ryan snub Israel festival
In an apparent reaction to the Gaza flotilla incident, actors Meg Ryan
and Dustin Hoffman reportedly have backed out of attending the
Jerusalem Film Festival. Ryan, star of When Harry Met Sally, canceled
her appearance the day after the Gaza flotilla incident. Hoffman,
famous for Rainman broke off negotiations, which had reached an
advanced stage, the day after the incident in which Israeli Navy
commandos boarded a Gaza-bound vessel attempting to break a maritime
blockade, resulting in the death of nine violent activists. In
addition to the actors, Prince Albert of Monaco canceled his
participation in the event, which begins Thursday and runs for two
weeks. The film festival is scheduled to have a tribute to actress
Grace Kelly, the prince's mother.

JERUSALEM/WEST BANK: ELECTIONS: MORNING
English/Nat
XFA
As dawn broke over the Old City of Jerusalem tough-talking opposition leader Ariel Sharon was poised to clinch a stunning political comeback.
Voting in the election for a new Israeli Prime Minister begins Tuesday and the latest polls give Sharon a 20-point lead over moderate incumbent Ehud Barak.
Barak has warned that Sharon will plunge Israel into war with its neighbours.
But many voters, fatigued by the Palestinians' uprising against Israel, now in its fifth month, appeared either apathetic or swayed by Sharon's mantra of peace with security.
Sharon, 72, has been riding a wave of disappointment in Barak's leadership.
Sharon's appeal is to Israelis upset with Barak's insistence on making concessions for peace while Palestinian violence continues.
Pledging security first and peace talks only after calm is restored, Sharon has rejected Barak's offers to the Palestinians, including a state in almost all of the West Bank and Gaza Strip and parts of Jerusalem.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Barak's situation is as bad as it gets right now with him down by as much as 20 percent in the polls. Things have gotten a little bit desperate in the Barak campaign especially since the Likud have never been ahead on the eve of election day in Israeli history.
SUPER CAPTION: Gil Hofmann, Political writer Jerusalem Post
Israeli and Palestinian negotiators held intensive talks last month, and said they made considerable progress toward a peace treaty.
Palestinian unrest began on September 28, when Sharon visited a disputed Jerusalem holy site sacred to Muslims and Jews.
So far 384 people have been killed, including 323 Palestinians, 13 Israeli Arabs, 47 other Israelis and a German doctor.
Israeli police and security forces were on alert Tuesday to try to stop bombing attacks by Palestinian extremists.
Israel's military announced Palestinians would be banned from entering Israel during the election, a routine security move it said.
At checkpoints all cars trying to leave the West Bank were stopped and searched and identity papers scrutinised.
The election winner will have 45 days to set up a majority coalition in Israel's fractious parliament, dominated by single-issue sectorial factions and split almost evenly between moderates and hard-liners.

Labor votes to join Netanyahu's government; vote, reax
(24 Mar 2009) SHOTLIST
1. Wide of conference hall, Labor party members waiting to vote
2. Various of party members voting on whether to join incoming government of Benjamin Netanyahu
3. SOUNDBITE (Hebrew) Eitan Cabel, Labor Party secretary:
1191 members voted, that is 78 percent (of party members). In favour of joining the government - 680 members that is 57.9 percent. Can I say the 'against'? Thank you. Against: 42.9 percent, that is 507 members that expressed their opinion against joining the government.
4. Party members chanting the word 'disgrace' in Hebrew
5. Man gesticulating and shouting in anger as party members argue with each other
6. Pan across two men whistling against the results
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Matan Vilnai, Knesset member:
It was my position and I believe that it's a great victory to the chairman of the party and it's important to the state of Israel and I'm sure that the next government will be much stronger when Labor will be a part of it.
8. More of members chanting against the decision
9. SOUNDBITE(Hebrew) Sheli Yacimovich, Knesset member:
It (the result) darkens Labor's values when it sits with an extreme right government for the economical aspect of it, that is my concern, and also in the political aspect. But I will not give up and I will do everything to rebuild the party, in order to bring it to the right way.
10. Wide of Vilnai addressing crowd
11. SOUNDBITE (English) Gil Hofman, Chief political correspondent Jerusalem Post newspaper:
Netanyahu is going to have a government that includes a consensus of Israelis from moderate left to extreme right. He will be governing together with Ehud Barak and the Labor party and that means that the peace process is going to be continuing, that he is going to have support from a majority of ministers to be continuing the peace process.
12. Former Labor party leader Amir Peretz
STORYLINE
Israel's Labor Party voted on Tuesday to join the incoming government of Benjamin Netanyahu, giving a centrist tone to the coalition that has looked hard-line up to now.
Prime Minister designate Benjamin Netanyahu reached a preliminary agreement Tuesday with Labor's leader, Defence Minister Ehud Barak.
Party secretary Eitan Cabel announced the results of the voting after a heated debate - 680 in favour and 507 against.
Some welcomed the results, but others chanted slogans like Disgrace after the announcement.
Netanyahu has signed coalition agreements with Yisrael Beitenu and Shas, two parties known for their tough policy lines toward the Palestinians, as is Netanyahu's own Likud Party.
Labor, in contrast, has been in the forefront of Mideast peace efforts.
Labor's 13 seats in the parliament would give Netanyahu a majority of 66 in the 120-seat house.
But there is a possibility that the party could split as a result of the vote, and some members might choose to remain in the opposition.
Labor's vote was a key development.
Lawmaker Amir Peretz, who opposed joining the government said after the vote that it would be hard to work together in terms of principles.
It (the result) darkens Labor's values when it sits with an extreme right government for the economical aspect of it, that is my concern, said Labor Knesset member Sheli Yacimovich.
However Knesset member Matan Vilnai called it a great victory to the chairman of the party.
It's the first indication of a possible softening of the future government's platform, and it also opens prospects for the more moderate Kadima Party, led by current Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, to agree to join the government.
Netanyahu has been a vocal critic of the outgoing government's peace talks with the Palestinians, saying conditions are not ripe for a deal.
