Contemporary Art in Eastern Europe
In the recent years Ukraine has become a true booming center of contemporary art in Eastern Europe. Various galleries regularly pop up and form their own audience, turning the visitor into an integral part of the art process. Frequent changes of expositions and lectures contributed to their greater popularity. As the latest proof of that, a performative lecture was held in Kyiv, hosted by a Belgian artist and resident at Izolyatsia Cultural Platform Steve Schepens. We are lucky to have Steve in our studio!

In Ukraine, the long running political crisis has had a negative impact on the country's economy overall.

UT Exclusive: Ukrainian cultural platform forced to flee from Donetsk continues work in Kyiv
Cultural foundation Izolyatsia was originally a platform for artists in Donetsk to inspire social development in the industrial heartland of east Ukraine. But in June last year the combined Russian-separatist forces seized their territory forcing them to flee. Many of their artworks left behind were destroyed. Today, the group has launched new projects outside their original homeland. To talk about those initiatives and the organisation's future plans, Ukraine Today's Viewpoint is joined by Oleksandr Vynogradov from Izolyatsia.

Trance version of the Ukrainian folk song За нашою границею (Za nashoyu granytseyu) created for the show FolksTrance and performed live at Izolyatsia, Kyiv.
FOLKSTRANCE is a research project by Véronique Langlott who explores the cultural heritage of the dance of two countries, Ukraine and Germany. The research is based on the YouTube videos with 10 Ukrainian and 10 German folk dances that the choreographer Véronique Langlott selected, discovered, and abstracted together with the two dancers Yuliia Lukianets and Viktoria Donets. The dance techniques include Loops, Gifs, Speedchanges, Fastforward, and Rewinding, different forms of image transformation and editor panels.
The dance is accompanied by the music group Mavka. The sound collective Mavka abstracts the original music of the folk songs transforming it into contemporary vocals, melodies, and electronic beats.
Concept & Choreography: Véronique Langlott
Dance: Véronique Langlott, Yuliia Lukianets, Victoria Donets
Music by Mavka: Iryna Lazer – composer, singer, Oleksiy Mikriukov – composer, Taras Lazer – composer.
Costumes – Alis La Luna

Kirby – Islamic battalions in eastern Ukraine? 09 July 2015
John Kirby, State Department Spokesperson.
U.S. Department of State - Daily Briefing: July.09.2015
UKRAINE MERGES NAZIS AND ISLAMISTS by Robert Parry - 07 July - In a curiously upbeat account, The New York Times reports that Islamic militants have joined with Ukraine’s far-right and neo-Nazi battalions to fight ethnic Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine. It appears that no combination of violent extremists is too wretched to celebrate as long as they’re killing Russ-kies.
The article by Andrew E. Kramer reports that there are now three Islamic battalions “deployed to the hottest zones,” such as around the port city of Mariupol. One of the battalions is headed by a former Chechen warlord who goes by the name “Muslim,” Kramer wrote, adding:
“The Chechen commands the Sheikh Mansur group, named for an 18th-century Chechen resistance figure. It is subordinate to the nationalist Right Sector, a Ukrainian militia. … Right Sector … formed during last year’s street protests in Kiev from a half-dozen fringe Ukrainian nationalist groups like White Hammer and the Trident of Stepan Bandera.
“Another, the Azov group, is openly neo-Nazi, using the ‘Wolf’s Hook’ symbol associated with the [Nazi] SS. Without addressing the issue of the Nazi symbol, the Chechen said he got along well with the nationalists because, like him, they loved their homeland and hated the Russians.”
As casually as Kramer acknowledges the key front-line role of neo-Nazis and white supremacists fighting for the U.S.-backed Kiev regime, his article does mark an aberration for the Times and the rest of the mainstream U.S. news media, which usually dismiss any mention of this Nazi taint as “Russian propaganda.”

ISLAMIC BATTALIONS, STOCKED WITH CHECHENS, AID UKRAINE IN WAR WITH REBELS - 07 July (Mariupol) - Wearing camouflage, with a bushy salt-and-pepper beard flowing over his chest and a bowie knife sheathed prominently in his belt, the man cut a fearsome figure in the nearly empty restaurant. Waiters hovered apprehensively near the kitchen, and try as he might, the man who calls himself “Muslim,” a former Chechen warlord, could not wave them over for more tea.
