Japan Trip: Sounkyo Onsen Hot spring Kurodake Ropeway Hokkaido11 Moopon
Japan Trip: Sounkyo Onsen Hot spring Kurodake Ropeway Hokkaido11 Moopon
Daisetsuzan (大雪山) is Hokkaido's largest national park. It is a paradise for outdoor lovers, hikers, brown bears and deer. It is the first place in Japan to see autumn colors and snow each year.
Sounkyo (層雲峡) is a popular hot spring resort town in the north of Daisetsuzan National Park. It is located in a scenic narrow gorge that is flanked by 100 meter high, forested cliffs. There are a pleasant village center, onsen baths and two beautiful waterfalls in Sounkyo. Sounkyo is also a good base for hiking tours into the national park with ropeway access to nearby Mount Kurodake.
Sounkyo offers autumn leaf viewing, and one of the first places in Japan to see the seasonal spectacle. The colors typically start to appear around the summit of Mount Kurodake in mid September and then gradually move down the mountain slopes.
Onsen
Sounkyo offers some hot spring baths to soak in, including one public bath house, the Kurodake no Yu, located in the town center. This bath house has gender-segregated indoor and outdoor baths with limited views of the surrounding landscape. More hot spring bathing is available at the town's many ryokan. Several of them open their baths to non-staying guests during daytime for an admission fee of typically around 1000 yen.
Kurodake Ropeway
The Kurodake Ropeway provides visitors easy access into the higher parts of Daisetsuzan National Park, which departs from next to the Sounkyo Visitor Center in the back of the village center. At the top of the ropeway is a chair lift, which brings you to within a one hour hike of the summit of Mount Kurodake. The traditional 1-2 day tour for advanced hikers continues from the summit of Kurodake through the wild interior of the national park to the summit of Asahidake, from where one can descend to Asahidake Onsen.
Access Information
There are seven direct buses per day from Asahikawa Station to Sounkyo (110 minutes, 2100 yen one way).
Otherwise, you can ride a JR train to Kamikawa Station (40 minutes, around 2000 yen by limited express train or 70 minutes, 1070 yen by local train from Asahikawa) and catch a bus from there (30 minutes, 870 yen, 11 buses per day).
Some ryokan in Sounkyo provide a free shuttle bus for staying guests from Asahikawa or Sapporo.

Travel from Sapporo to Otaru
The port of Otaru developed around 150 years ago as the economic center of Hokkaido during the Meiji and Taisho periods (late 19th/early 20th century). It is now is one of Hokkaido’s leading tourist destinations. The canal and the bank buildings survive today just as they were during that historic period, giving the town its distinctive nostalgic and romantic feel. Take a walk along the canal and enjoy the atmosphere of a bygone era, or go browsing in Otaru’s glassware shops - the town is renowned for its glass products! Or else sample some of the unique fish and seafood dishes served in the restaurants around the port.

Vlog: Hokkaido Sapporo trip 2018
Hi guys! Sorry it's been a while! I've actually gone to Hokkaido with my family back in March when it was still cold! (That's why you can see snow haha) It was so fun and I just couldn't stop eating seafood and icecream as Hokkaido has the best milk!
Have you been to Hokkaido and what was the best thing/ what do you want to try?
Outline:
-Nijo market 二条市場
-Sakanaya no Daidokoro 海鮮処魚屋の台所
really good seafood restaurant! The restaurant is really small though so best to go with a small group (max. 4)
-Otaru 小樽
This place is filled with glassworks, crafts, music boxes and sake distilleries! Many things to see!
-Sawawa (茶和々 小樽店) - this shop has really good green tea ice cream, warabi mochi and green tea buns!
-leTao- really good cheesecake and desserts!
Naruto Chicken store なると - This shop has really good deep fried chicken, prawns and sush!
The Historical village of Hokkaido - 開拓の村
This is an open air museum which exhibits about 60 typical buildings from all over Hokkaido, dating from the Meiji and Taisho Periods (1868 to 1926).
Fukurou Tei ふくろう亭- This place is awesome for Jingisukan! (BQQ lamb) there are a lot of Jingisukan around Sapporo but I love to eat lamb any day!
-Onsen Ryokan Nukumori-no-Yado Furukawa
ぬくもりの宿ふる川
- This is a really good and comfortable Onsen Ryokan, it includes onsen, a 7 course dinner and breakfast buffet etc
Jozankei Onsen 定山渓温泉-
This town has a lot of onsen ryokan, restaurants and shops! You can even find free foot baths all around town! It's so cool! (hot i mean haha)
Gyokusuien Tea shop 玉翠園- This tea shop has so many selection of teas!! My sister bought so much haha she's a teafanatic ! The tea pots, cups are soo cute! Also, the green tea icecream is really nice too!
-Shiroi koibito park (White lover park) 白い恋人 パーク
白い恋人 (white chocolate biscuit) is a very famous souvenir from Hokkaido so going to the White lover park is a must!! It's a shame some of the parks were closed as it was the end of winter and they were getting ready for spring. But we still managed to see a lot and had a really fun time!
