5430 O'Donnell Lane Glen Ellen, CA 95442 ~ Downtown Glen Ellen present by Tina Shone
Just over the little brick bridge on O’Donnell Lane, this charming cottage style residence sits on a triangle of land at the confluence of Calabazas and Sonoma Creeks. The interior includes three bedrooms and two full baths.
At the front gateway, where you enter from the lane, the house name Creekbottom is hand carved into the lintel. As you enter, a giant heritage oak stands to your left, and another stands behind you across the lane. The limbs of the oaks spread broadly overhead. Through the gateway, a one hundred yard view stretches ahead of you over a long green lawn.
As you walk through the oak shaded yard, a cool refuge on hot summer days, a stone pathway leads past the front terrace. The terrace is paved with brick and framed by a boxwood hedge. Stepping onto the terrace, the house spreads before you and wraps around the terrace at each end. A brick chimney stands between twin sliding glass doors, each eight feet wide. When the doors are open, they unite the brick terrace with the 25 foot living room within. The entry door is to the left, at a corner of the terrace. It includes a small leaded glass window to admit natural light into the entry hall beyond.
The kitchen, dining, and living room areas are all open to one another. Together they make a generous unified space, yet each is distinct in accord with its role. The kitchen is compact and shipshape. A tall north window, with hand-carved lettering on the trim, lights the kitchen and gives a view into the lane and beyond.
The laundry is convenient to the kitchen, with a pocket door between. Over forty years of residency, the house has been renovated and added onto with careful attention to design and detail, not only for pleasing appearance, but also for workflow, convenience, and comfort.
Inside, most floors are red oak, solid and thick. All doors are panel doors. Most are made of vertical grain fir with fir trim, naturally aged in color. All doorways are wide. Most rooms have vaulted ceilings and skylights. A third sliding glass door opens from the dining area onto a small deck, a giant heritage bay tree, and a fenced stone terrace. The living room includes a gas fireplace with hand carved cherry mantel and spacious built-in bookshelves. A folding staircase in the back hall gives access to attic space for light weight storage.
Outside, a side path leads down stone steps into a stone walled grotto. It is sheltered from sun on all sides by stands of bamboo and air conditioned by cool air out of Sonoma Creek. Multiple decks offer spots for eating, relaxing, reading and enjoying the beautiful outdoor environment. Outbuildings include a writing studio, a lattice house, and a garage workshop.
The delightful oasis of Creekbottom House sits near the commercial center of Glen Ellen, mere steps to restaurants, stores, and village conveniences. For walkers and bicyclists, the 40+ acres (and expanding) Sonoma Valley Regional Park is a short walk down an adjacent lane, with Jack London State Historical Park within a mile.

Jack London Ranch & Glen Ellen, CA (Part 3)...Missy Jenn's First Boondocking Adventure
As our final leg of our overnight adventure, Missy Jenn and I ventured to Jack London State Park to the ranch of famed author, Jack London. To me, this is a must-see stop for anyone who is interested in American literature, particularly adventure writing. London was born in San Francisco in 1876 and raised in Oakland, a dirt poor illegitimate child. He yearned for adventure and when old enough he sought escape in travels -- from the Yukon to the South Pacific.
He was an individual that lived each and every moment to the fullest and his writings became a journal of his travel experiences, albeit in novel form. I was struck by the fact that he had copyright and legal problems just as so many of us who produce content have today. In fact, in 1913, he could not even raise $1,000 cash to pay a bill. Still, he persevered and lived life at full throttle not caring about how tomorrow would pay for itself. He truly was a free spirit in every sense of the word.
At the Jack London Museum (which is the house his widow Charmian London constructed three years after his death, and six years after his beloved Wolf House burned down) you will find a first edition collection of all of his works, private letters, original manuscripts and, in all, a life well told. There are docents readily available to answer questions and for the admission price of $10 per vehicle, I found it an excellent value.
