Brazil, Jericoacoara Beach, Attractions, Jijoca de Jericoacoara, Ceará, Brazil,Jericoacoara is a virgin beach hidden behind the dunes of the west coast of Jijoca de Jericoacoara, Ceará, Brazil. Selected by The Washington Post as one of the Top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world, nicknamed Jeri, consists of blue lagoons, calm seas and huge dunes. History : n 1984, the area around Jericoacoara was declared an Environmental Protection Area. It became a national park in 2002. As a result, many restrictions for building and tourism were introduced to help preserve the area. The distance to bigger cities and limited road access also helped keeping the beach and the village isolated.
Fairly recently, Jeri was just a fishing village with little contact with modern life. Electricity was generated by diesel engines and street lights was provided only by the moon and the stars. After the selection by The Washington Post was published, tourism grew rapidly and the beach village became a popular destination. Electricity arrived in the village in 1998 and today a hot shower and air conditioning are no longer luxuries. However, since the illumination of the streets is forbidden by local law, street lights are still provided by the moon and the stars. Jericoacoara & Paradise in Preá - Travel Deeper Brazil (Ep. 12)
A perfect day of adventure in Jericoacoara and Preá Beach in Northeastern Brazil -
After a long, seven-hour bus journey from Fortaleza to Jericoacoara, I arrived at the Rancho do Peixe Pousada (hotel) on Preá Beach where I fell in love with the private beach bungalow right on the beach.
The next morning I took my first Kitesurfing lesson right on property and was completely hooked after a few short hours.
Thanks to the favorable weather and wind conditions, Jericoacoara and Prea Beach is surrounded by some of the most popular coastline for Kitesurfing in Brazil.
From kitesurfing lessons at Rancho do Peixe, I hitched a ride in a buggy, across the beach and through the sand dunes of Jericoacoara National Park to the town of Jericoacoara.
I strolled around the quiet village for the afternoon before making my way up the giant sand dune at the edge of town to watch the sun set behind the Atlantic Ocean.
It was a beautiful day and well worth the trip from Fortaleza to Jericoacoara.
If you ever travel to Brazil and visit Northeastern Brazil, I highly recommend coming up and meeting Jeri and staying at Rancho do Peixe!

City Description:
Jericoacoara is a resort town in the eastern Brazilian state of Ceará. It’s known for wide Jericoacoara Beach. Restaurants and bars line its sandy streets. Principal Square is at its heart, on Rua Principal, the lively main road. The town is ringed by freshwater lagoons such as Paradise and Blue lagoons, and by Jericoacoara National Park, with vast sand dunes. Sunset Dune is a popular sundown viewpoint.The dunes can be explored on dune buggies, quad bikes or horseback. Offshore, strong trade winds from Africa make the area a popular kitesurfing destination. The Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima church, in the north of town, was built in 1945 using locally sourced stones. Northeast of town, on the shore, Pedra Furada is a large arched stone that has been naturally worn down over time by the waves.
Weather and Events:
Jericoacoara has a tropical climate and is warm year-round. Peak season is Dec–Jan, while Feb–May sees significant rainfall. A good time to visit is after the wet season, when the freshwater lakes are fuller. The town is at its busiest during Brazil’s annual Carnival celebrations (Feb/Mar) and New Year’s Eve (Dec 31).

Jericoacoara (and Camocim) - Brazil
Jericoacoara is a beach located in the Northeast of Brazil, close to the equator, in the state of Ceará. It was an isolated fishing village, until about 20 years ago, without any contact with modern civilization. In 1984 the place was declared an Environment Protection Area by federal law. It was first discovered by backpackers and adventurous travellers. In 1994, the North-American newspaper Washington Post Magazine chose Jericoacoara as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches of the world.
At sunset, it is tradition to watch the sunset from a big sand dune on the west side of the village, called Sunset Dune. Among the several attractions, the most famous is the Arched Rock, a huge gate of stone sculpted by the waves, situated in the Rocky Region of Jericoacoara.

After our first meeting at the airport in Fortaleza, we had wonderful weeks together in Ceara, we fell in love instantly and love each other intensely much.
