John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove
John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove, Audubon, PA
From 1801 to 1806, Mill Grove, Montgomery County, was the first home in America of artist and naturalist John James Audubon. Today, the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove preserves one of the nation’s largest collections of Audubon art.
An educational center of the National Audubon Society, Mill Grove is dedicated to connecting people with the natural world by interpreting Audubon’s legacy and encouraging guests to explore the estate, which remains largely as John found it—a have for birds and wildlife.
The Center consists of a 240-year old stone farmhouse and barn, a re-creation of John’s bedroom, original art from John’s masterworks Birds of North America, 175 acres of rolling woodlands and open meadows, more than 9 miles of walking trails, a bike trail linking the Perkiomen and Schuylkill River Trails to downtown Philadelphia and Fairmount Park just 18 miles by trail and year-round educational programs and special events.
Jean Bochnowski, the Center’s Director, provides an overview of the history and activities of the Center to PA Environment Digest editor David Hess.

John James Audubon Center feathers its nest
May 2, 2019 (AUDUBON, Pa.) - After a decade of planning, the John James Audubon Center in Montgomery County is preparing to open the latest “feather in their cap”: a $13 million, 18,000-square-foot museum celebrating birds.
“As you walk through the gallery, you’re going to learn about why birds are so amazing, their adaptations, their life cycles, migrations,” said John James Audubon Center Manager Carrie Barron.
The John James Audubon Center is based out of Mill Grove, the first American home of renowned artist and naturalist John James Audubon. Audubon most known for his 1839 book The Birds of America, which includes 435 hand-drawn prints of birds. Curators said the new museum, a joint project of the National Audubon Society and Montgomery County, seeks to bring John James Audubon’s artwork to life. It will include exhibits on John James Audubon and conservation, as well as galleries for local artwork. But the museum’s focus will, of course, be avian.
“Our main exhibit when you walk in is going to be all about birds,” said Page Plocic, Audubon Pennsylvania’s communications coordinator.
Huge murals of Audubon’s prints already decorate the walls while workers installed the WOW Birds! Gallery that will showcase the beauty and variety of birds along the Atlantic Flyway.
“Big, small,” Plocic said, describing the types of birds featured. “Fluffy, kind of funny looking.
The museum joins the Center’s existing educational facilities, including the historic Mill Grove house, barn and nature trails, as well as a bird sanctuary housing the seven “Resident Birds of Audubon” like Odin the Great Horned Owl.
The property stretches over 200 acres and includes we have 5 miles of hiking trails. As part of the museum project, the center is also opening an outdoor “Fledging Trail” installation that takes visitors on a bird’s journey from egg to flight. The Fledging Trail is designed to inspire the next generation of natural scientists and eco-enthusiasts, curators said.
“That’s our real goal, is just to have people exploring nature and getting excited about it,” Plocic said.
The museum will be open seven days a week from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission will be $14 for adults and $10 for children ages 6 to 17. All outdoor trails on Mill Grove grounds are open year-round from dawn to dusk.
The new exhibit will open to the public Wednesday, June 5.

Valley Forge Park-ruins
Not very well known are these buildings of Valley Forge that have been abandoned and forgotten. Yet, people lived in them. Some may have been Continental generals, slaves, or simply workers trying to make a living. Join us for a look at these few unknown artifacts of the past. The Ruins of Valley Forge

A 13-year old girl from Attucks Middle School ended up on life support at Texas Children's Hospital two days after a fight off campus.
Kashala Francis' mother, Mamie Jackson, says her daughter told her she was attacked by two girls after school on Thursday, and that another girl later jumped in and kicked her in the head.
Jackson says when her daughter returned home Thursday afternoon, she had a bruise on her face, but insisted she was okay.

Unami Creek
Unami Creek located in Finland, Bucks County Pennsylvania. 3 miles of road lined with this scenic creek. Huge boulders, broken dams, elevation changes and the bonus abandoned boy scout camp make this a great place to ride a motorcycle to. If you are local and want to visit, just google for Swamp Creek Rd Finland, Pa. Google will put a marker RIGHT on the spot.
Hillary & Stan
One of the best things about our job is that we get to meet some great people, but every once in a while we run into some truly amazing and inspiring people, like Hillary and Stan! As we got to know them it was easy to see why everyone we met were singing their praises. Stan went out of his way all day to make sure that Emily and I had everything we needed, asking us if we ate, if we needed anything, did we have enough water, we were treated as one of their guests! It was easy to see that Stan genuinely cared about everyone who attended his wedding, and we were honored to be there to tell the story of their day.
