Six influences in the 1960s and 1970s launched Puerto Vallarta into becoming a major resort destination.
First: The Mexican federal government resolved century-old property disputes of land that had communal status, land the federal government had appropriated from the Union en Cuale mining company to be parceled out as communal farms. The land's communal (ejido) status had stifled development in the town for much of the 20th century. A significant transition of communal lands into private ownership within present Puerto Vallarta city limits took place in 1973 with the establishment of the Vallarta Land Trust (Fideicomiso) to oversee selling government land into private hands, and using the sales revenue to develop the City's infrastructure.
Second: American director John Huston filmed his 1963 movie The Night of the Iguana in Mismaloya, a small town just south of Puerto Vallarta. During the filming, the US media gave extensive coverage to Elizabeth Taylor's extramarital affair with Richard Burton, as well as covering the frequent fighting between Huston and the film's four stars. The subsequent publicity helped put Puerto Vallarta on the map for US tourists.
Third: The Mexican government invested significantly in transportation improvements making Puerto Vallarta an easy travel destination. To make Puerto Vallarta accessible by jet aircraft the government developed the City's international airport. Ground transportation significantly improved. Government invested heavily in the development of highway and utility infrastructure. Another vital improvement for the city was the El Salado wharf (where the current cruise terminal is located), inaugurated on June 1, 1970, making Puerto Vallarta the first harbor town in Jalisco.[8] Improvements and investment in infrastructure led to Puerto Vallarta experiencing tourist booms, starting in the late 1960s. While tourists from the United States and Canada started flowing in, tourists in Puerto Vallarta were principally from Mexico, who started traveling to Puerto Vallarta because the improved infrastructure (4-lane paved highways) made travel easy and convenient (e.g., Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta).
Fourth: In 1968 the Puerto Vallarta municipality was elevated to City status. The elevation in status reflected interest by Mexican federal and state governments in developing the Puerto Vallarta as an international resort destination. Puerto Vallarta has since also attracted a lively expatriate community from the U.S., Canada and Europe. Fifth: The City showcased its new image. In August 1970 visit of U.S. President Richard Nixon who met with Mexican then-President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz in Puerto Vallarta for treaty negotiations. The visit showcased Puerto Vallarta's recently developed international airport and resort infrastructure. The U.S. Presidential visit contributed significantly to getting Puerto Vallarta's name in the news and visibility as a resort destination.
Sixth: Resort hotel development in Puerto Vallarta boomed in the 1970s. Prior to 1973 hotels in Puerto Vallarta tended to be modest, mid-priced establishments. Only two large sized luxury hotels existed (the Real and the Posada Vallarta). After 1973, Puerto Vallarta experienced rapid growth in global-brand luxury hotels and international resorts, to where in 2013 there are approximately 41 five star and four star rated hotels.
An economic downturn in Mexico caused tourists to flock to Puerto Vallarta. In 1982, the peso was devalued and Puerto Vallarta became a bargain destination for US tourists. Consequently, the mid-1980s saw a marked and rapid rise in the tourist volume. This uptick fueled additional development, for example the Marina which was started in 1986. But Puerto Vallarta's success caused other Mexican cities to take note. The early 1990s saw Mexico's government and private business develop other resort destinations, such as Ixtapa and Cancún. This took away Puerto Vallarta's exclusivity of sorts on the foreign tourist trade, and caused a slump in travel to Puerto Vallarta.
With growth comes problems. During the early 1980s Puerto Vallarta experienced a marked increase in problems related to poverty. While the devaluation of the peso brought record numbers of tourists to the area, it also stifled investment and thus construction. So while more and more workers were arriving in Puerto Vallarta to try to cash in on the booming tourist trade, less and less was being done to accommodate them with housing and related infrastructure.

This bridge was built in 2012 as part of Puerto Vallarta’s downtown revitalization project, it brought two important parts of town together and injected a bit more life into the cultural part of the Isla Rio Cuale.

It offers some very nice views of the Island and Old Vallarta to the south, the river is also in full display as are the houses that line the edges of the Cuale River, many of them the original homes that established themselves in the Gringo Gulch. You can see on photos from The Night Of The Iguana documentary that John Huston was there overlooking the river and a much less developed south side.
This bridge (also known as Iguana Bridge or Bridge of the Iguana) is a large white structure, with the same handrails that are used on the pedestrian bridge that goes over the Cuale river between the Malecon II and the romantic zone (Old Vallarta) so I will guess they were both built by the same company. What makes this bridge stand out, besides the harmonic metal structure's design (painted white), are some steps that appear more than half way up, they bulge out of the rough concrete-sand stairs and are covered in green and yellow colored tiles, a nice touch that makes the Gringo Gulch bridge unique.
So now there are three hanging bridges that connect the north and south sides to the island, two main bridges and two pedestrian bridges at both ends of the island, one by the sea and the malecon's south end, and this one, connecting the east end of the island with the historical downtown area and the Gringo Gulch.

Antes de la película de John Huston, la Noche de la Iguana, filmada en 1964, Puerto Vallarta era tan solo un somnoliento poblado en la Costa del Pacífico donde se unen los estados de Jalisco y Nayarit. Pero Elizabeth Taylor llegó para vigilar de cerca a su amor Richard Burton, mientras filmaba con la voluptuosa Ava Gardner. Los rumores publicitarios acerca del tórrido romance de Burton y Liz, así como la película, colocaron a Vallarta en el mapa turístico.
La región de Puerto Vallarta es en realidad varios destinos en uno solo, cada uno con su propio carácter y encanto. El Río Cuale divide la ciudad en norte y sur. En el extremo sur se encuentra la pintoresca Zona Romántica, donde la Playa los Muertos atrae a los amantes del sol a la dorada arena y sus numerosos bares de la playa. Más al sur, nos atraen los pueblos costeros de Boca de Tomatlán y Mismaloya, donde fue filmada la Noche de la Iguana. Al norte del rio, la Ciudad Antigua serpentea cuesta arriba hasta llegar a Gringo Gulch, a lo largo de la bahía, donde encontraremos la Plaza de Armas (plaza principal) y el anfiteatro Los Arcos, donde diariamente se presentan espectáculos gratuitos que atraen multitudes.
El conocido Malecón de Puerto Vallarta (paseo marítimo) se extiende desde la Zona Romántica hasta el inicio de la Zona Hotelera. Aquí encontraremos una caprichosa colección de esculturas de bronce, así como el emblemático caballito de mar. Más hacia el norte se encuentran la Zona Hotelera y la Marina, donde se ubican muchos hoteles y restaurantes. Cruzamos un moderno puente para pasar del Estado de Jalisco, al Estado de Nayarit, hogar de la Riviera Nayarita de rápido desarrollo, con poblados tales como Bucerías, Sayulita y una serie de complejos turísticos.
Los habitantes del lugar parecen estar genuinamente contentos de recibir un promedio de 3.7 millones de visitantes en su ciudad. De hecho, gente proveniente de Estados Unidos y Canadá hacen de Puerto Vallarta su hogar lejos del hogar, invierno tras invierno. Algunos de ellos quedan tan enamorados del clima local que invierten aquí en bienes raíces y negocios. Puerto Vallarta goza de un clima tropical. Durante la soleada temporada seca, de noviembre a mayo, las temperaturas diurnas se mantienen entre 27˚ y 30˚ C y prácticamente no hay lluvia. Por la noche, la temperatura desciende entre 16˚ y 18˚ C, lo cual es ideal para dormir, pero tal vez sea una buena idea llevar un chal o un saco ligero. La temporada de lluvias, más calurosa y húmeda, dura desde junio hasta octubre.
Puerto Vallarta comparte la misma latitud que las Islas de Hawái, y está bellamente ubicado en el centro de la Bahía de Banderas, la mayor bahía de México, que mide 42 km de punta a punta. Al norte de la ciudad de Puerto Vallarta, el Río Ameca crea una frontera natural entre Jalisco y el Estado de Nayarit, donde los nuevos desarrollos turísticos forman la Riviera Nayarita.
Al alejarnos de la playa, las empinadas calles empedradas de Puerto Vallarta parecen fundirse con las verdes colinas de las laderas de la Sierra Madre. Haremos mucho ejercicio con solo caminar hacia arriba y alrededor de la ciudad. El Río Cuale, que divide a Puerto Vallarta en dos partes, fluye desde las montañas y desemboca en el Pacífico.
Hoy en día, Puerto Vallarta, es el rey de los destinos invernales más populares de México debido a su gran diversidad y un clima casi perfecto. Impresionante Playa Mismaloya al sur de Puerto Vallarta Jalisco Mexico
Mismaloya es un pueblo pequeño, más conocido por su playa, 20 minutos al sur de Puerto Vallarta, atravezada por Carretera 200 que va hacia el sur con destino Costa Careyes. Ésta pasa entre el pueblo y la playa, a un lado del Barceló, resort que antes se llamaba La Jolla de Mismaloya.
El nombre es de origen Nahuatl (michmaloyan) que significa lugar donde puedes agarrar peces con tus manos, ya no es necesariamente el caso, pero se nota claramente por qué es un lugar atractivo y bello. Entre la jungla, de y los cerros, atravieza un pequeño riachuelo, el mismo que pasa por El Edén río arriba, que desemboca en la pequeña bahía que hospeda esta pequeña, pero importante, playa.
En el pueblo mismo cruzando la carretera al lado contrario del Barceló está la entrada, hacia el interior encontrarás algunas opciones de actividades y visitas bastante recomendables, de hecho algunas están entre las mejores cosas que hacer en Puerto Vallarta durante tu visita.
Si te preguntas que hacer en Mismaloya, te podemos enumerar varias, podemos comenzar con El Edén y Edenva que son dos paseos maravillosos con una entrada en el mismo lugar y estacionamiento compartido.
El Edén es un restaurante con un canopy tour que comparte espacio con el río, cascada y pozas para remojarse y refrescarse. Es el lugar específico donde se filmó la película original de Depredador con Arnold Schwarzenegger, así que encontrarás un helicóptero usado en el set y una exhibición que detalla bien anécdotas y detalles interesantes de la película.
Edenva es un bello lugar con varias pozas y cascadas, zona de bar y alimentos, hamacas y zona de descanso, un maravilloso lugar para visitar en familia. Hay una destilería de Tequila en el pueblo y un muy popular lugar para ir en familia, el Zoológico de Vallarta, un amplio zoo que da una oportunidad única de ver, interactuar y alimentar a los animales.
En la playa tienes opción de nadar, asolearte, pasear por la playa y realizar varias actividades. Hay, por ejemplo, varios restaurantes que ofrecen buena comida del mar, pescado y mariscos, hay varios puestos de masaje que te ayudarán a desestresarte, está Paddle zone que ofrece stand-up paddles, tablas para que remes en la bahía y tours que te llevan a Los Arcos a ver la naturaleza.
La playa de Mismaloya es muy agradable con olas suaves, aguas color verde-esmeralda muy limpias y arenas doradas de grosor intermedio.
Hay un número considerable de lanchas que están a manos de los pescadores locales, algunos de ellos ofrecen tours y traslados hacia los atractivos de la bahía, incluyendo Los Arcos de Mismaloya, Boca de Tomatlán, Colomitos, Las Ánimas, Quimixto, Majahuitas, Yelapa y otras playas hacia el sur de la bahía.
Para llegar a esta playa tienes que partir de la zona romántica de Puerto Vallarta, en la esquina de las calles Basilio Badillo y Constitución. Ahí tomas los buses de color naranjo marcados Mismaloya / Boca. El cobro es como medio dólar. Otra opción es tomar un Uber o taxi, te llevarán al mismo lugar que es al frente del Barceló, a unos pasos verás unos stands que ofrecen tours y recorridos, entre éstos y el Barceló, hacia la derecha, va un camino empedrado que te lleva directo a la playa, bordea el río y no hay cómo perderse, son unos 200 m.
La Playa de Mismaloya Puerto Vallarta, es una playa que además tiene mucha historia, en los años 60's sólo se podía llegar por mar, algo así como Las Ánimas o Yelapa en la actualidad. En ésa época el famoso director de cine John Huston decidió que el cerro que delimita la playa por el sur y la playa misma serían parte del set de la película La Noche de la Iguana, trajeron a grandes personalidades de cine a Puerto Vallarta, a Richard Burton como actor principal y éste trajo a su novia de ese momento a pasear con él, Elizabeth Taylor. Ambos estaban casados con otras personas en ese momento y, claro, fue todo un escándalo, cosa que no le gustó mucho a los habitantes muy tradicionalistas del lugar, pero a cambio, ayudó a catapultar Vallarta y Mismaloya a una fama que no se le ha quitado a la fecha. Aunque ya no se ve desde el mar ni desde el suelo, las ruinas del set construido para la película siguen ahí, escondidos entre las palmeras y vegetación tropical.
Entre las muchas cosas que hacer en Puerto Vallarta, no puedes dejar de visitar esta playa tan bonita, exuberante e interesante. Para algunos es una de las mejores playas de Puerto Vallarta Jalisco y es un paseo, que sin duda, dejará muchos recuerdos bellos de su visita a esta impresionante parte del estado de Jalisco, México.
