Thayendanegea: Chief Joseph Brant: Mohawk - The Haudenosaunee Confederacy
This is a series of photos and words about some of Thayendanegea's (Chief Joseph Brant's)/ life.., with a mini-biography ..and a little info. about The Kanyen'kehà:ka People & The Haudenosaunee Confederacy..
-----------------------------------------
Joseph Brant, or Thayendanegea, (Tehayentaneken or Tehaientaneken)
'he has two (pieces of) wood side by side.' / bind together to strengthen
Mohawk War Chief, Loyalist, statesman (born circa March 1742/43 in Cayahoga [near Akron, Ohio]; died 24 November 1807 at Burlington Bay, Upper Canada); brother of Mary (Molly) Brant. In May 1784, following the American Revolution, Joseph Brant led the Mohawk Loyalists and some other Indigenous peoples to a large tract of land on the Grand River granted them in compensation for their losses in the war.
Kanyen'kehà:ka (Mohawk)
Kanyen'kehà:ka or Kanien'kehá:ka (“People of the Chert”), commonly known as Mohawk by non-Kanyen'kehà:ka, are Indigenous peoples in North America. They are the easternmost member of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, also referred to as the Iroquois or Six Nations Confederacy. In the early years of the 17th century, they resided on the banks of the Mohawk River in what is now upstate New York. They became intensely involved in the fur trade and in the colonial conflicts of the next two centuries. Many had moved to the St. Lawrence River before 1700 and following the American Revolution, the remainder moved to Canada to reside in territories controlled by their ally, Great Britain. Here, the Kanyen'kehà:ka have garnered a reputation of militancy in maintaining their language and culture, and for defending their rights.
Haudenosaunee Confederacy
The Haudenosaunee Confederacy, initially consisting of five nations — Onöndowàga (Seneca), Goyogohó:no (Cayuga), Onöñda’gega (Onondaga) and Onyota’a:ka (Oneida) — was likely formed sometime prior to European contact. The sixth nation —Tuscarora — joined later, between 1722 and 1723. They are now referred to as the Rotinonhsyón:nih or Six Nations Confederacy.

“Do you call yourselves Christians?
Does then the religion of Him whom you call your Savior
inspire your spirit, and guide your practices?
Surely not.
It is recorded of him that a bruised reed he never broke.
Cease, then, to call yourselves Christians,
lest you declare to the world your hypocrisy.
Cease, too, to call other nations savage,
when you are tenfold more the children of cruelty than they.”

Michael Schwenger supports an expanded Joseph Brant Museum
After more than two decades of planning, the much-needed expansion of Burlington’s Joseph Brant Museum is finally a reality with a scheduled completion of July 2019.
In 2018, all levels of government showed their vocal and financial support to the expansion as a major community project which was timed to celebrate Canada’s Sesquicentennial (150th Anniversary) and the 75th Anniversary of Joseph Brant Museum!
THE VALUE OF LEGACY
Philanthropy is a virtue Michael and Jane Schwenger are instilling into their family through the creation of a family foundation, and by creating a permanent home for the family’s history through the Community Builders Initiative in the expanded Joseph Brant Museum.
Michael Schwenger, Don Smith and Dan Lawrie are urging their friends, neighbours and fellow business owners to support the project as the fundraising campaign strives to raise the final $800,000 of the $2.5 million commitment made by Burlington Museums Foundation toward the $11.4-million expansion.
Michael Schwenger Sr. says the decision to support the museum expansion is simple – “If you can afford to do it, you should do it.”

Cam Jackson adds his support to the Burlington Museums Foundation Mayors' Campaign.
After more than two decades of planning, the much-needed expansion of Burlington’s Joseph Brant Museum is finally a reality with a scheduled completion of September 2019.
MAYORS' CAMPAIGN
The Joseph Brant Museum expansion is a project whose time has finally come, says former Burlington Mayor Cam Jackson who praised the Burlington Museums Foundation for its commitment to moving the project forward. Cam, joins four other living former Mayors in supporting the Mayors’ Campaign to help reach the $2.5-million fundraising commitment of the Burlington Museums Foundation.
“The potential for our museum under this new design and plan is very exciting,” says Cam, who since vacating the mayoralty in 2010 has been active in a number of community projects including Community Living Burlington. Prior to serving as mayor, Cam was a school trustee for 10 years before spending 22 years at Queen’s Park as Burlington’s MPP.
“When you look at the incredible value we’re getting for (the museum) capital expenditure, it means a lot to our waterfront in terms of the programming, and integrating with the rest of the site. I’m just so very pleased the Foundation board worked so hard, and never gave up when council found other priorities. But its time has come, and the community deserves to get behind it 100 percent.”
Cam says his childhood memories of learning about the War of 1812 and the contributions of Joseph Brant and the First Nations people drive his passion for the project. “A lot of people don’t realize that British and First Nations forces were here in Burlington getting ready to push the Americans back across the border,” he says, adding that without the contributions of Joseph Brant and his people we probably wouldn’t be flying the Canadian flag today.
In speaking to community leaders, Cam says all have a responsibility to get behind the museum in helping future generations better understand where we have been and how Burlington came to be the thriving community it is today. View Cam’s interview at burlingtonmuseumsfoundation.ca.
The Mayors’ Campaign includes Cam and former Mayors Mary Munro (197778), Walter Mulkewich (1992-97), Rob MacIsaac (1998-2006) and Rick Goldring (2010-2018).

Paletta Family salutes patriarch through support of the Museum Expansion
After more than two decades of planning, the much-needed expansion of Burlington’s Joseph Brant Museum is finally a reality with a scheduled completion of September 2019.
A LASTING TESTAMENT PALETTA FAMILY SALUTES PATRIARCH THROUGH SUPPORT OF MUSEUM EXPANSION
The Joseph Brant Museum Burlington Builders Gallery, featuring the history of families who have made significant contributions to Burlington, appealed to the Paletta family who wanted to create a lasting testament to the generous contributions of family patriarch Pasquale (Pat) Paletta.
“My father came to Canada and started his meat processing business in Hamilton with one animal,” says Angelo Paletta, who today heads up the family’s Burlington-based real estate empire that includes shopping centres, office buildings and residential developments. The family also owns Princess Gates Entertainment which finances films, television and stage productions.
“He moved the business to Burlington in 1964 at the corner of Appleby Line and the QEW, and grew that to more than 100,000 square feet and 165 employees before selling it to what was then Canada Packers. From there he began investing in real estate and that is where our primary focus is today.”
The spirit of philanthropy was part of the business from its beginnings, a tradition that continues today with the family’s $50,000 contribution to the Joseph Brant Museum expansion.
Angelo says it’s important for the community to rally behind the museum expansion, and urges other businesses to follow his lead. “Get involved, put your money where your mouth is … show the community that you’re willing to give back, and have your story kept alive for generations to come.”
