Watercolour Printmaking at Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre
Over two decades ago, non-toxic watercolour printmaking was invented at Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. Now it is our signature art class which is offered up to times per week. Whether you are a seasoned artist or wanting to learn something new, you will discover the art of learning through play. No previous art experience is required.
Artists invent, explore and experiment with wet colour that floats on a rigid surface. Rolling the printing plate through an etching press and printing the image is only the beginning. Mixed media and collage increase the artwork's versatility. The ensuing masterpiece evolves and becomes a treasured work of art to take home. The results are surprising, satisfying and rewarding!
Introduction to Watercolour Printmaking workshops are every Wednesday from September to June, 9:30am - 3:30pm with a potluck lunch. Saturday workshops are available once a month.

Art from the Heart:- Introduction
This series focuses on different ways of seeing and experiencing the world, reflected in artwork. It is about sharing, awareness, artistic expression and courage. Every Monday, six inspired artists from Community Living Oakville (Ontario, Canada) arrive at Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre, and within two hours they have produced personal masterpieces with laughter and joy. These gifted artists have challenges in life just as we all do, and their desire is to enjoy the process of creating together, and to share their gifts and inspirations with others. This is creativity originates straight from the heart.
There are many people who would like to participate in our classes, however our studio is small and the waiting list is long. It is our hope that these 7 videos (plus introduction) will help anyone who is interested in how we teach.
This series is for everyone - whether you are an emerging artist, teacher, support worker, family member, or a home-school parent... these wonderful artists have a lesson to teach all of us: that you can always discover your Artist Within!

Art From the Heart: Lesson 2 - Hatch
The Stone Age happened millions of years ago. Some of the smooth, rounded stones from Lake Ontario are like eggs that have been waiting to hatch all these years. With the arrival of climate change, will they finally hatch? What is inside?
Learn about stones, evolution, water and global warming. The surprise inside is up to your imagination!
This lesson is about creating a focal point by using different sizes, shapes and colours.

Art From the Heart: Lesson 7 - Tulip Community
Tulips were brought to Europe from Persia and Turkey in the 16th century. By the 17th century, their popularity became so great that the price of a single bulb crashed the markets with “tulip mania.”
Different tulip colours carry distinct meanings. Each one is unique.
A bouquet is beautiful and uplifting.
Each artist picks a tulip, studies it, draws it, colours it and cuts it out. All the tulips become a bouquet with connecting stems.
Become tulip friends with a sense community; of belonging together.
Nature is beautiful and imperfect, just like us. Together we have impact. All parts of the work come together to create a sense of completeness.

Art From the Heart: Lesson 6 - Me, the Tree
Trees, rooted with trunks and branches, point their twiggy, leafy fingers at the sky. Poets write poems about trees, artists paint trees. We are all part of the trees of life. Trees symbolize the life force of people on earth. Their leaves change with the seasons.
What kind of tree are you?
Creating symmetry by distributing the weight of shapes, colour, lines and textures. Leaves are symbolic of the artist’s inner spark.

Art From the Heart: Lesson 3 - Shell Box Treasures
Have you ever walked along a shell-covered beach and found it impossible not to collect your favourites? Pick them up, hold them, draw them six different ways. Then place them in a treasure box.
Nature is our greatest teacher. Collect her treasures with a sense of joy and discovery. Each shell has been inhabited by life.
Each shell is unique in shape, feel and pattern.
Closely observing various shells to replicate their 3D qualities. Using an axis to measure top to bottom and left to right. Every Monday, six inspired artists from Community Living Oakville (Ontario, Canada) arrive at Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre, and within two hours they have produced personal masterpieces with laughter and joy.

Art From the Heart: Lesson 1 - The Lottery
You have just won the lottery and you want to go house hunting.
Where would you like to live? In the woods, by a lake, on a mountain?
Everyone has a dream home. Winning the lottery can make it come true. A home is shelter; a place of comfort with a roof and windows. Open the door and meet the Artist Within!
This art lesson is about line, drawing freely with ink.
Experiment by using three different widths of Sharpie pen.

Art From the Heart: Lesson 5 - Zodiac and Colour
Dogs are colour blind but for most of us the world is in technicolour. Colour feeds us, bright colours cheer us.
Never take colour for granted. Allow it to lift up your spirits.
Float in it, sing with it, eat it, celebrate it.
The Zodiac provides knowledge based on our birth dates and the stars. It can be a fascinating way of answering the questions:
Who are we? Where did we come from? Where are we going?
Drawing the zodiac sign raises curiosity. Review warm and cool colours, and secondary colour mixing. The rainbow moves through the spectrum from Infrared to ultraviolet.

Art From the Heart: Lesson 4 - Walk the Dog Doodle
Hold a pen on the paper vertically, and imagine it is a dog on a leash. Allow it to freely wander with no destination. Let the dog (line) get out of control and follow it until it is time to come back to where you began. Go on a critter hunt: find places to add eyes, legs, noses...what else?
Bring them to life with texture and colour and listen to their stories.
This lesson encourages discussion about the difference between texture and pattern. It is about freedom and faith in letting things happen. Add imagination and invention to put you in touch with your Artist Within.
