Jason Baerg: Returning
This dynamic, multi-media exhibition features two recent works created by Jason Baerg, a Métis artist based in Toronto. The work in this exhibition includes a series of circular paintings from the Relations series, which draw on Baerg's early training in abstraction combined with computer-generated elements. Also included is a new installation of figurative-abstract paintings, entitled Nomadic Bounce. Both works are presented alongside videos comprised of photo- and computer-based imagery, thus continuing Baerg's commitment to new and traditional modes of art production and engagement.
Relations was developed out of a residency investigating the many prophecies that concern 2012—Mayan, Hopi, Mohawk, Tibetan. The resulting 13 circular works, or tondos, speak to notions of the passage of time and suggest a reconsideration of Indigenous frameworks of knowledge. Relations explores these cosmic themes through sculptural paintings, which embrace our relationship to each other, the Earth, the sun and beyond.
For his newest installation, Nomadic Bounce, Baerg looks at the tension of, as he says, running to and from everything we love and hate at the same time; from place, from people, returning to the same place and same people. The work draws upon this personal narrative to create a dynamic installation of laser-cut, shaped canvases as an intersection of the locative and the figurative. Nomadic Bounce was produced as part of an Indigenous Exchange residency opportunity between the RMIT School of Art (Australia) and the University of Lethbridge (Canada).
Baerg is Aboriginal curator in residence at the Judith & Norman ALIX Art Gallery in Sarnia, Ontario. He has presented his work across Canada and internationally, participated in residencies, sat on numerous art juries, and received awards. Dedicated to community development, Baerg has contributed to such national arts organizations as The National Indigenous Media Arts Coalition and the Independent Media Arts Alliance. He is currently the Chair of the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective.
The exhibition was initiated by Brenda Barry Byrne at Strathcona County Art Gallery @ 501, Sherwood Park, Alberta, with a national tour coordinated by the Mendel Art Gallery. Returning is organized by Mendel Associate Curator Sandra Fraser.
30 sec Lord Beaverbrook Exhibition w VO Final
Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery is an uncompromising selection of works from world renowned artists, such as Freud, Gainsborough, Matisse, Tissot, Sargent, Turner; and by prominent historical Canadian artists, such as Krieghoff, Morrice, Carr, Milne, Gagnon and members of the Group of Seven.
Visitors will have the rare opportunity to see, up close, Salvador Dali’s monumental Santiago El Grande, widely considered one of his most accomplished paintings. Measuring more than four meters high, Santiago El Grande is both majestic and unsettling, demonstrating Dali’s profound technical mastery, his deep appreciation for the history of art, as well as the disorienting dream-like quality associated with this colourful artist.
In this first North American tour of the Beaverbrook’s most prestigious holdings, the exhibition highlights exquisite paintings by important old masters, as well as seminal artists in the history of Canadian art. The exhibition’s stop at the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery October 2, 2015 to February 7, 2016. in Sarnia, Ontario is the only stop in Central Canada and the East North Central States.

James Kirkpatrick: Secret Base by the Lake
Curated by James Patten and Matthew Purvis
April 17 to June 7, 2014
Difficult to categorize, James Kirkpatrick combines music, painting, sculpture and an array of less familiar activities in his work. He began as a graffiti artist and his unique figurative imagery is still found on walls and trains in Europe, North and South America. Over the past decade, he has increasingly worked within more traditional gallery contexts while maintaining the experimental aesthetics of outsider art.
With Secret Base by the Lake, Kirkpatrick alludes to science fiction and cartoons, mashing them up and transforming them into a highly interactive exhibition. Featuring work created since 2011, including several new pieces made for the show, many aspects of Kirkpatrick's practice complement each other in startling ways.
Born in London, Ontario, Kirkpatrick studied art at H.B. Beal Secondary School—a wellspring of Canadian contemporary art since the 1940s—before receiving his BFA at Halifax's Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2002. He was recently featured in the group show L.O. Today at Museum London and the solo exhibitition Sculpting Sound at the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery in Sarnia. Also a musician, Kirkpatrick combines vocals with electronic noises produced on homemade instruments crafted from re-purposed video games and children's toys. In 2013 he performed in France, Canada and Switzerland. His first tour of Japan starts on April 25th.
James Kirkpatrick: Secret Base by the Lake will be documented with a forthcoming publication featuring essays by exhibition curators Matthew Purvis and James Patten, and Rhiannon Vogl, Curatorial Assistant, Contemporary Art, at the National Gallery of Canada.

Instant Places: SLEEPER LIVE_01 at M:ST Performance Festival (Excerpt)
October 7, 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Truck Gallery
2009 10 Ave SW Calgary, Alberta
For the Calgary presentation the Instant Places team created a performance environment at the new Truck Gallery space to serve as a launching pad for an extended journey into visualsonic space. Over a three-hour performance they search for undiscovered zones of time, conjuring constellations of light that move to a world music of the nearly distant future.
In the SLEEPER project the Instant Places team imagines a future of telepathic communication through synesthesia. For these iterations of SLEEPER Kavanaugh and Birse perform in an environment of generative projections and multichannel sound, using purpose-built hardware/software systems that combine analog feedback paths and acoustic sources with custom Max/MSP programs for live sampling, audio spatialization, and 3D image generation.
SLEEPER is being developed with the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council, The Canada Council for the Arts, and the Judith and Norman Alix Gallery in Sarnia Ontario.
