Students from Kua O ka La Milolii Hipuu Virtual Academy Public Charter School on Hawaii Island tell the story of traditional opelu fishing in the remote South Kona fishing village of Milolii. For many Milolii residents, opelu fishing is more than a tradition – it is a means of survival. Families sell their catch as their main source of income and are trying to pass the practice down to their children so that the tradition and income source can continue.

Students from Kapaa Middle School on the Garden Isle tell the story of a local church group that provides free laundry services for the needy.
Students from Wheeler Middle School in Central Oahu profile a recently arrived military dependent who has fallen in love with the hula.
Continuing the theme of outsiders embracing Hawaiian culture, a mainland transplant becomes the Hawaiian Studies teacher at St. Andrew’s Priory in Honolulu (a story from the HIKI NŌ archives).
Students from Konawaena High School on Hawaii Island show us how they are inspired by a Hilo physician who, as a high school student, was the least likely person to ever become a doctor.

This special compilation show features outstanding HIKI NŌ stories from the Fall 2013 season, hosted by two students who were first exposed to HIKI NŌ in middle school and have continued working on HIKI NŌ in high school: Shisa Kahaunaele from Kamehameha Schools Kapalama (formerly from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School on Kauai), and Caitlin Alvior from Mililani High School (formerly from Mililani Middle School).
Included are: A story from Waianae Intermediate School (Oahu) about a teacher who was being bullied by some of his students; a report from Konawaena High School (Hawaii Island) on a community-created mural that memorializes the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings; a portrait from Kainalu Elementary School (Oahu) of a man who overcame the stigma of birth defects to become a highly successful yo-yo master and entrepreneur; from Kalani High School (Oahu), a demonstration of how the deaf and blind utilize cards to cross the street; from Mililani High School and Middle School (Oahu), the story of a Honolulu-based organization that helps women filmmakers get their start in the industry; from Waipahu High School (Oahu), the story of a high school senior who doesn't let the fact that she is homeless get in the way of opportunities for learning and success; from Lahainaluna High School (Maui), the story of a high school senior who, with graduation imminent, must choose between going to college here in the U.S. or returning to her roots on a tiny Micronesian island that is gradually submerging due to the effects of global warming; a story from Waianae High School (Oahu)on the dangers of over-fishing our oceans; and a reporter from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School (Kauai) on the overwhelming traffic gridlock on the Garden Isle.

Students from Ka Waihona o ka Naauao Public Charter School host this episode from their campus on Oahu's Leeward Coast. Between stories, student hosts will take viewers on a tour of their school and their Waianae Coast community.

HIKI NŌ: #822 - Top Story - Wai‘anae High School, Commercial dolphin tours | Program
TOP STORY:
Students from Wai‘anae High School in West O‘ahu tackle the controversy surrounding commercial dolphin tours. On August 23, 2016, NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) published a regulation prohibiting tour boats from being within 50 yards of a spinner dolphin, including swimming with them. This regulation has caused a major downturn in business for ocean tour companies such as Sea Hawaii, which claims it has seen a 90% decrease in revenues since the ruling was put into effect.

Students from Mililani Middle School host this episode, which features student journalists from Aliamanu Middle School looking back on the Salt Lake public library's history in the celebration of its 20th anniversary. On Kauai, Kapaa High School students feature the island's craze over a Japanese toy called kendama.

HIKI NŌ Focus on Compassion: Kūpuna | Program
The first of four Focus on Compassion HIKI NŌ episodes drawn from the archives compiles stories that center on the topic of kūpuna, or elders. This show is hosted by Crystal Cebedo, a 2016 HIKI NŌ and Wai‘anae High School graduate who is currently attending Menlo College in Atherton, California on a full scholarship. In this episode, the stories highlight the compassion we feel towards our elders or the compassion our kūpuna show us.
The outstanding HIKI NŌ stories in this Focus on Compassion show include:
–“Elder-Student Talk” from Aliamanu Middle School on O‘ahu: a look at the wisdom shared by The Elders, a group of former global leaders, to Hawaii’s youth and young adults at the Pillars of Peace Conference.
–“Papa Fu” from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School on Kaua‘i: the story of a 101-year old man and the lessons he’s learned and shares from his long life.
–“Taro Farmer” from Kapa‘a Middle School on Kaua‘i: the story of Kinichi Ishikawa, a 98-year-old 442nd Regimental Combat Team veteran and a life-long farmer, who continues to work the land and mentor the next generation of farmers.
–“Scam Story” from Kainalu Elementary School on O‘ahu: a cautionary tale of how senior citizens can fall prey to scam artists and advice on how people can avoid this kind of financial exploitation.
