The Case Against Octopus Farming
Asia accounts for two-thirds of the reported global octopus catch, and China alone accounts for more than one-third. The principal importers are Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the northern Mediterranean countries (especially Spain, Greece, Portugal, and Italy). Demand is also growing in China, the United States, and Australia. Octopus that are globally traded are served primarily in upscale markets. A 2015 report of the Australian Fisheries Research and Development Corporation on the prospects for octopus aquaculture notes: “Octopus is now supplied as raw fresh and/or frozen product for use in local restaurants and cafes and value-added marinated varieties suitable for gourmet delicatessen outlets and supermarkets.”
There is already a wealth of research that suggests octopuses are one of the most complex and intelligent animals in the ocean. They can recognise individual human faces, solve problems (and remember the answers for months) and there is some evidence they experience pain and suffering. Numerous videos on the internet of octopuses escaping from their tanks or stealing fishermen's catches have fuelled a human fascination with the only invertebrate that the 2012 Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness considers sentient alongside mammals and birds.

Octopus Aquaculture
The Department of Fisheries aquaculture scientists are working closely with the fishing industry to develop WA's growing octopus fishery.
This recently filmed Escape With ET segment looks at the Department's efforts to achieve the holy grail of octopus aquaculture by closing the animal's life cycle - breeding, hatching and rearing the octopus to adulthood in captivity.
If successful, the Department's scientists will have been the first in the world to achieve the scientific feat and will pave the way to a significant new limb of the aquaculture industry.

A sticky problem: boom in taste for octopus squeezes market
(12 Aug 2018) LEADIN:
Whether it's stewed in the Spanish style or sliced as Japanese sashimi, octopus as a dish is becoming a victim of its own popularity.
Prices for the tentacled mollusc have almost doubled in the past two years due to a global boom in appetite for these classic dishes.
And supplies have tightened, with fisheries not yet able to farm octopus and relying on ocean currents to yield a good harvest.
STORYLINE:
Octopus is a traditional delicacy in Spain's north western region of Galicia.
Carmen Torres Lorenzo has been selling fish and shellfish for three decades in the fish market of Bueu.
She sells locally caught octopus, prized for its unique flavour nurtured by a diet of crustaceans and molluscs on the sea floor.
But demand is has outstripped supply and market prices for Galician octopus are higher than ever before.
The price will rise even more. Because if less are caught the price will go up even more. I wish, I wish a lot of octopus would appear and they (fishermen) would capture a lot of volume and the price will come down, but that won't happen, she says.
Prices for the tentacled mollusc have about doubled in the past two years due to a global boom in appetite for these classic dishes.
And supplies have tightened, with fisheries not yet able to farm octopus and relying on ocean currents to yield a good harvest.
Torres Lorenzo says that the price of locally caught octopus has risen ten euros/kilo in the last two years as demand has increased.
At Bueu market a medium octopus (up to 2kg) has increased from 7/8 Euros to 13/14/15 Euros per Kilo and a large octopus (more than 2kg) has increased from 8/9 to 17/18 Euros per Kilo, according to Torres Lorenzo.
The Food and Agriculture Organization says prices are expected to continue to grow as demand has risen in all major markets, including Japan, the United States, China and Europe.
Meanwhile, catches have been limited, even in the biggest producing countries, Morocco, Mauritania and Mexico.
The fishing boats set out at night to harvest the sea.
A flock of gulls follows the boat, waiting for small specimens that the fishermen return to the ocean.
Earlier this summer the Galician government imposed a closure of the octopus fisheries for 45 days to conserve stocks. The season resumed on July 3.
José Manuel Rosas is President of Bueu's fishermen guild.
Luckily, the Galician octopus is booming. And when other fisheries are not at their best, here (octopus price) goes up. Of course, there is a lot of demand for this product, and what we can offer is little, so the price skyrockets. But it is just because other markets are far worse than ours. Ours is almost stable, says José Manuel Rosas, President of Bueu's fishermen guild.
Galicia only produces 25 percent of the octopus that is consumed in Spain according to data from the Bueu's fishermen guild.
Globalisation has hit global taste buds and the popular tapas dish Pulpo a la Gallega (Galician Octopus) features on menus from Brighton to Brisbane.
But increasing the quotas set by the Galician government is not an option says Rosas.
If we increase the size of the Galician fleet, if we put more boats to catch octopus, then the octopus could not withstand the onslaught of the sector. I mean, this would kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. We have to pamper it, we have to take care of it. (Galician octopus) production is what it is.

Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. EU-US trade talks will not include agriculture, says EU trade chief Cecilia Malmström
The European Union and United States have not yet agreed on the scope of trade negotiations, but the bloc will not include agriculture in the talks, its trade commissioner said today in Washington.
Cecilia Malmström told reporters the EU was willing to include all industrial goods, such as autos, in the discussions.
“We have made very clear agriculture will not be included,” she said, though the two sides had not yet agreed on that issue.
She was speaking after meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and ahead of a meeting with U.S. and Japanese leaders to discuss World Trade Organization (WTO) reform this week.
U.S. President Donald Trump has demanded better terms of trade for the United States from China, the EU and Japan, saying poor trade deals cost the United States millions of jobs.
Washington has already reworked the North American trade treaty with neighbors Mexico and Canada.
