Monterey Bay Kayak: Sea Mammals/Birds Upfront & Personal in Elkhorn Slough
Monterey Bay (also known as the Serengeti of the Sea) is one of the most spectacular marine wildlife preserves with prime wildlife viewing opportunities. Today I take a kayak out onto the waters of the Elkhorn Slough to get upfront and personal with sea otters, egrets, seals, cormorants, sea lions, and pelicans.

Kayaking in 360VR! Elkhorn Slough with Jeremy Shore
Sunny and warm-ish Saturday morning with Monterey Bay Kayak's tour guide Becca! She's awesome and so informative, you can tell that marine life is her passion.
Jeremy and I took the 9am (best time!) 1.5 hour Harbor Tour. Two person kayak allows me to take photos and video while Jeremy get a great upper body workout....LOL!!! But seriously, yes!
Early morning isn't always this sunny and clear but the water is always calmer than the afternoon. Wind starts to kick in around 10 or 11 and then paddling out of the slough gets a whole lot harder. Into a head wind!
This is a 360 video so make sure to take advantage of that and get a good look around. See something you want a closer look at? Zoom in! There are tons of southern sea otters and quite a few have pups. These animals were nearly gone from the earth due to the fur trade. Their pelt is the thickest/warmest in the animal kingdom.
Before commercial hunting began in the mid-1700s, an estimated 150,000 to 300,000 sea otters occurred in coastal waters throughout the rim of the North Pacific Ocean from northern Japan to Baja California, Mexico. In 1911, hunting was prohibited under the terms of an international treaty for the protection of North Pacific fur seals and sea otters signed by the United States, Japan, Great Britain (for Canada), and Russia. By then, only a few thousand otters remained, including a small colony of about 50 otters along the remote Big Sur coast of central California.
So pull up a chair, get your VR Viewer of choice and a set of ear buds to listen to Becca talk about this part of Northern California sea-life! All without getting wet OR sunburned! Enjoy!

Hiking Elkhorn Slough
The Elkhorn Slough is a magical place full of wildlife and beauty. Meandering seven miles inland from the coast in the center of the picturesque Monterey Bay, the Elkhorn Slough harbors the largest tract of tidal salt marsh in California outside of San Francisco Bay. This biologically rich estuary provides habitat for a diversity of resident and migratory birds, plants, marine mammals and fish, and has been identified as a Globally Important Bird Area by the American Birding Conservancy.

Lyrics:
Loma Prieta, earthquakes and fire
We are connected, we are combined
I see you sleeping so peacefully
While right below you live all the freaks
I try to reason with set in ways
I couldn't reach them, they stayed far away
You are the closest to the sky
That we could get to before we had to fly
Loma Prieta, you won't let me go
From the first day, at the birthplace of my soul
Loma Prieta, I wonder what you've seen
Is the whole entire human race a dream
You'll be here after we have left
One last disaster, one final breath
It's hard believing how old you are
I feel the beating of a tired heart
I'd like to thank you for the shape
of California, that you helped create
Loma Prieta tell me what you've seen
I would like to know how we came to be
Together alone
Loma Prieta, Earthquakes and fire
We are connected, we are combined
Recorded live on 10/15/2019
Dedicated to the 10/17/1989 shake

My first narrated video. My wife says I sound like a robot. Whatever, doesn't compute. I worked my butt off for the two fish I landed. You have to keep at it, don't get frustrated. At the end of the day, it's just fishing.

Unidentified Creature
Unidentified creature found on beach. This strange unknown sea monster washed ashore on an unknown beach. What is this strange animal?
This picture was sent to us by Elizabeth and we are now sure what this dead animal is that she found here.
The Truth Behind the Strange Image Revealed
Little is known about the origins of this image or what this unidentified sea monster could be. After searching the web, we believe that it has similarities to that of an oarfish, an ocean species that is often mistaken for sea monsters when they are found dead every year.
Is this just an oar-fish or could this be a new species of sea life that was just discovered?

Watch the USC Wrigley Catalina Marine Reserve - LIVE
This camera sits underneath the dock of the Wrigley Marine Science Center and is located in the Blue Cavern Marine Protected Area at Catalina Island. A statewide network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) safeguards California’s rich coastal resources. Catalina is a crown jewel of our state, where beneath the waves lie some of California’s richest marine habitats. Eelgrass and elk kelp beds, interfaces of sandy bottoms and rocky reef kelp forests, and the deep waters of the channel provide homes for hundreds of species of fish, shellfish, marine mammals and seabirds.
These pristine waters provide opportunities for recreational and educational activities such as kayaking, snorkeling and diving. The Marine Protected Area here has been heavily studied and contributed to MPA research since 1989.

Finding Good Crappie Fishing Spots
Jason made a point in the fall and winter to look for new crappie fishing spots with his electronics. He started in some productive arms of the lake and idled along break lines looking for brush piles with fish.
These creek channel edges are often where fishermen like to drop their brush piles. So Jason scanned with Lowrance HDS 3D Structure Scan for likely looking spots and brush piles until he found schools of crappie holding on them.
Once he saw a good school of fish on a brush pile, he stopped and fished it. He would cast a jig over the top, when they quit biting that, he would pitch to the piles from a closer distance, and finally he would get right on top of them and fish vertically on the pile.
He had one of the best fall/winter periods for crappie fishing in recent years by getting out and hunting for fish more with his electronics.
