Kayak Trip - Maenporth to Helford River - Cornwall UK
Kayak trip on 20th October 2012 from Maenporth Falmouth UK to Helford River.
Easy 2 hour paddle, head land off the Helford was a little choppy.
On the night of the 30 December 1978, the Scottish trawler Ben Asdale was wrecked off Maenporth I have included a photo of the remains of the hull showing at high tide. I narrated the video slightly wrong and said 1979. This stretch of coast is very colourful paddle and I have now done this a few times.
Please check out my other kayak videos.
Filmed with Panasonic DMC-FT20.

Kayak trip - Porthallow to the Helford River near Falmouth Cornwall
September 2013 kayak trip, around the Helford River area and a beautiful day too.
Porthallow (Cornish: Porthalow) is a small fishing village on the east coast of the The Lizard peninsula just south of the Helford River, in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It sits between the two neighbouring villages of St Keverne and Roskorwell. It has one road running through it and a post office. It is also on the South West Coast Path. It has a pub, the Five Pilchards, named such for Cornwall's fishing fleet of five pilchards used to come out of Porthallow.
In this kayak trip we head from Porthallow round Nare head and into Gillan Creek, from there we head out around St Antonys into the Helford River and stop on a beach before returning.
The stony beach on Porthallow, that reaches out to a sandy one in low tide, is privately owned but can be accessed by anyone, villager or tourist. Manacles Reef, a dangerously rocky area that sinks many oncoming ships, lays just a mile off shore along with all its victims still there. It has a new village hall built in 2010 for the benefit of the villagers. It is as eco-friendly as possible with solar panels and floor heating from ground-floor beach heat. Many different local programmes take place such as yoga, Pilates, and monthly film showings. The wall facing the bay is made entirely of glass. Porthallow lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Almost a third of Cornwall has AONB designation, with the same status and protection as a National Park.

Kayak Cornwall: Fowey to Lostwithiel
After planning a sea trip from Porthpean to Fowey, we were disappointed to arrive at the coast to find that the launch site was too dangerous. Time for plan B which was to launch at Fowey and paddle to Lostwithiel, we were in luck here as the tides were perfect to have a free ride upstream, lunch then another free ride on the outgoing tide.
We managed to paddle past Lostwithiel finally stopping for sandwiches at the base of the A390 road bridge. This is a very nice river trip with the river flowing through some beautiful countryside. Keep your eyes open for a lot of wildlife, I saw two kingfishers (my first ever) and some marvelous Dippers (check them out). I prefer sea paddles but this river offers a great alternative if its big out at sea. We paddled back to Fowey and continued to the mouth of the estuary.

Kayak Cornwall - Falmouth to Portscatho
Kevin, Guy and I left Swanpool beach in Falmouth and paddled across the mouth of the Fal estuary where the wind was brisk and waves were moving seawards, continuing past St Anthony's lighthouse and around the Roseland peninsula to Portcatho. Guy ended the journey early and fell asleep on Porthbeor beach (said he had a late night!!) but we did see him again safe and sound at the end of our paddle.

Kayak Cornwall: Helford Passage to Gweek
Due to the winds blowing force five and some large swells we decided to skip a sea trip and paddle the Helford river from the Ferry Boat Inn to Gweek and out to the mouth of the estuary. This is a pretty river journey with much to observe. It does need to be done at high tide if Gweek is to be reached and there are also a number of creeks to tempt you from your path.
After reaching our destination and taking a quick lunch on a grassy island by the road bridge we realised it was time to leave if we were not to be left high and dry. On the down river trip we took our time looked for some future overnight camp spots and paddled to the very end of Frenchmans Creek.

Kayak Cornwall: Portreath to Carbis Bay
An exciting 11 mile one-way trip from the beach at Portreath via Godreavy Island to Carbis Bay. After rounding the corner at Ralph's Cupboard we saw a large Sunfish. The swell on the journey up to Godreavy made for an intersting paddle, avoiding rocks and reefs.
There was a powerful tidal race around between the shore and Godreavy Island and large swells on the outer route around the lighthouse. We saw a total of 6 Sunfish on the journey and a pod of around 20 Bottlenose dolphins.
One word of warning. If you do go on a one way trip, be sure to take the keys of the car that will get you back to the start. I did not! Duh. Fortunately one very kind person helped us out which somewhat dissipated my embarrassment. Lesson learnt!

Kayak Trip - Porthoustock and the Manacles - Cornwall UK
November 2012 Kayaking trip at Porthoustock, around the inshore sections of the Manacles. Dean Quarry loading Cargo Ship Shoreham, this will now be rare footage as the Quarry is now being shut down. My biggest disaster in this film was missing capturing a very big Basking Shark, it was so close at the time I had to avoid foul hooking it with my fishing gear. By the time I had retrieved my line the shark had slipped back off into the depths.
It was a very calm day but there was a fresh south westerly wind blowing so I could not get around as far as I would have liked, just out from the shelter of the rocks was a little choppy.
Filmed with Panasonic DMC-FT20, I now have a GoPro Hero3 black edition to go with this.
