River Wye canoe trip, wild camping, 4 day paddle from Glasbury to Hereford
Canoe trip on the River Wye from Glasbury in Wales to Hereford in England. 4 day paddle covering approx 30 miles on one of the finest stretches of the middle Wye, passing through Hay-on-Wye, Whitney, Bredwardine, Monnington Falls and ending at Hereford. Eschewing the established campsites, we instead chose to have a few nights on gravel beaches and grassy patches right next to the river. Provided you treat the countryside with respect and leave no trace of your stay, it’s entirely feasible to camp next to the river in peaceful secluded spots, which was an inherent part of the whole trip for us. After all, it’s your world too !

Thinking about canoeing the River Wye?
I hope this video encourages you to get a canoe and travel down the River Wye.
In this video we travel from Glasbury to Byecross Farm campsite on a two day trip. We parked our car at Byecross Farm campsite and used haytaxibus.co.uk service to take us including canoe & gear to Glasbury, where we 'put in' and set off on our journey.
Our first campsite was 'The Pound' at Whitney-on-wye which was about 10 miles down river. It offered good facilities next to the pub 'The boat inn' which gave us a much deserved pint.
The next day we travelled apx 12 miles down river to our destination Byecross Farm campsite which was holding a charity event 'Byecross River Rock' a campsite I would definitely return to, highly recommended. I met some some great people, wonderful memories. Thats what we do it for ;)

Ross-on-Wye to Symonds Yat by River
Scenes from a Wye Valley boat journey, from Ross-on-Wye to Symonds Yat shot for
The journey of approximately 15 miles took 7 hours as water levels were very low following a very dry month of June. I think I walked in the water, towing the moat almost as much distance as I was able to ride in it.
Although shot from a boat in this instance for film kit carrying convenience, using mostly stop motion stills photography, this journey is a popular canoe route.

River Wye - 2 day canoe trip, Hereford to Hoarwithy
A two day canoe trip from Hereford to Tresseck campsite at Hoarwithy with an overnight camp on the riverbank inbetween. An easy 16 mile paddle which could probably be paddled in one long day, but I prefer to dawdle and really take in the beautiful surroundings, why the rush? Although I paddled this section of the river mid-week in order to avoid the hire company crowds it was still fairly busy with groups. It’s a more popular section of the Wye compared to further upstream sections.

Two day canoe trip and wild camp on the River Wye - Glasbury to Bredwardine in a Hou 13.
Two day canoe trip on the River Wye from Glasbury, Powys down to Bredwardine, Herefordshire. A leisurely 18 mile paddle over 2 days passing through Hay-on-Wye, Whitney and finally Bredwardine bridge. The star of the show being undoubtedly the river itself and the countryside surrounding it. Sure, you could probably do the trip in less time, but what’s the point in that if you can’t linger over the beauty of a place and take some time to truly appreciate it. A night on the river bank was the icing on the cake for me - with just the sound of the river passing by and the stars up above on a clear night.
