Review: Go Dragon Boat on Huong River, Hue City, Vietnam
Welcome to Tank Hung - Viet life!
Welcome to your hometown of Vietnam! Today I will introduce you a type of tourism in Vietnam that is the dragon boat on the Perfume River in Hue City, Vietnam.
Coming to the ancient capital, Hue dragon boat seems to have become a feature of this land. Slowly across the river splits the two sides of the city is the shadow floating boats dragging yellow dragon decorated Huong giang. In the past, dragon boats were often reserved for the king to navigate the river. This boat has become a unique means to visit famous sights in Hue such as Thien Mu Pagoda, Hon Chen Temple, Emperor Khai Dinh Tomb, Minh Mang Tomb or simply watch the Perfume River. ...
Because the dragon boat Hue so characteristic because of the shape of the ancient structure, still seems to remain the same shape. The head of the boat is fitted with dragon shaped castings with full details such as eyes, nose, mouth, mane and rear tail. The dragon-scaled hulls are painted with the same color as the dragons, which are reminded in legendary stories. The Hue dragon boat is now run by the engine, formerly a rider to carry the king. What is more interesting when sitting on the boat along the Perfume River breathed fresh air, watching the scenery around the fruit is wonderful.

Emperor Khai Dinh (1885-1925) ruled Vietnam for 9 years. His tomb took 11 years to complete. Construction began in 1920 and was completed in 1931. Under Khai Dinh, Western culture and influence began to seep into Vietnam. The king himself visited France in 1922. As a result, his tomb has many elements of Western architecture. In fact, of all the tombs, Khai Dinh's probably least resembles oriental architecture.
Emperor Khai Dinh's tomb is built using concrete, its roof with slates and the gate is made of wrought iron. The builder made use of the lighting rod and electricity is used to light the place. Beyond these modern building materials and designs, the tomb had elements of eastern art mixed with western designs.
Throughout the interior of the tomb, colored glass and ceramic chips were used to form mosaics of oriental design. The ceilings were hand painted much like the ceilings of western churches, but the designs were of dragons and clouds. In the book, 'Art Vietnamien', Emperor Khai Dinh's tomb was cited as an example of Vietnamese neo-classicism.
Hue Boat Tour :: King's Tombs :: 3.07.11
The boat tour in Hue visits 3 tombs via boat. 100,000 VND ~ $5 USD per person takes you to several locations around Hue. The first locations was a Kung Fu show, which we skipped (30,000 VND extra). We've seen a lot of Kung Fu.
We then visited tombs 2 and 3 on the tour, which held the last King's remains. Overall, a great opportunity to visit many locations in Hue.
Tip: Bring your own lunch. The lunch provided by the tour is extremely small.

Hue City Tour
Hue used to be the national capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945, a great destination to learn about Vietnamese history, culture and cuisine. A city tour of Hue includes the Imperial Citadel, Thien Mu pagoda, tomb of Kinh Gia Long, tomb of king Minh Mang or Tomb of King Khai Dinh. At night, it is enjoyable time to relax on the romantic dragon boat on Perfume River and listen to royal music. What a day to spend in Hue!

A trip down the Perfume River on the Hue Dragon Boats takes you to visit the most famous tourist attractions in Hue, and include Minh Mang Tomb and Khai Dinh Tomb. Many other sights around Hue, like Thuan An Beach, and several other Royal Tombs, can be reached by the Dragon Boats on the River.
But in my opinion, this is a tourist trap, to be avoided at all cost. As soon as you get on board they try to sell you all sorts of stuff: clothes, trinkets etc...
Ninh Binh - Vietnam (S02|E04)
First day in Ninh Binh, Vietnam. When I was in Hanoi, most of the backpackers were skipping this stop or spending just one day but from my point of view, this place is INCREDIBLE! You have to stay here at least 3 days and 2 nights, rent a scooter and go around :)
Tran An overtook all my expectations: wild nature, pagodas, natural tunnels and beautiful lagoons.
Hao Lu, the ancient city, was nothing great, but the park after the tunnel was nice istead.
Didn't make it to the biggest pagoda of Vietnam (Bai Dinh) because I didn't find then right entrance but I'm going there tomorrow, trust me :D
I rented a scooter in my hostel (Go Ninh Binh Hostel - verygoodverynice) for 100.000 Dong /day, around 4 euro.
The price of the boat tour in Trang An was 200.000 Dong and it lasted 3h.
Vietnamese people are great!

The Minh Mang Tomb is one of the most interesting emperor tombs in Hue. It is situated 12 km outside the city, on Cam Ke Hill, on the west bank of the Perfume River and can be reached by car or -- much nicer -- by boat.
Emperor Minh Mang (1820 - 1841) was the second son of Emperor Gia Long, who founded the last Vietnamese dynasty, the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945). He had been planning to build a tomb for himself as early as 1826. But it was not until September 1840, after fourteen years of looking for a suitable location, that the construction of the tomb began. During the building phase, in January 1841, Minh Mang got ill and passed away at the age of 52. Emperor Thieu Tri, his successor to the throne, continued the task according to his father's plans. Minh Mang's corpse was buried in Buu Thanh in August 1841. The construction of the tomb, however, was not completed until two years later, in 1843.
The Minh Mang Tomb is renowned for its architecture, which fits harmoniously into the surrounding landscape. Like in other tombs of this period, the general elements of the tomb architecture are: outer-walls, triple gate (Tam Quan Gate), Salutation Court, Stele House, temples, lakes, pavilions, gardens and the tomb itself.
The structure is laid out according to three main parallel axis, the center of which is the Than Dao path. The Dai Hong Mon Gate is the main entrance to the tomb. The gate was opened only once to carry the Emperor's coffin to the tomb, and has been tightly closed since then. The visitors' gates are Ta Hong Mon (on the left) and Huu Hong Mon (on the right). Adjacent to the main gate, there is the Honors Courtyard, which hosts a number of stone statues: two rows of high-ranking mandarins, elephants and horses. From the courtyard, three granite staircases lead to the Stele Pavilion (Bi Dinh). The stele Thanh Duc Than Cong contains inscriptions (in Chinese character) from Minh Mang's biography written by his son Thieu Tri, praising his merits. About 60 stanzas of inscripted poems can be found in the Stele Pavilion.
The Salutation Court has four main areas. The Hien Duc Gate leads to the worship place. In the centre, there is the Sung An Dien Temple surrounded by Ta Phoi Dien and Huu Phoi Dien (the frontal temples to the left and right) and Ta Tung Phong and Huu Tung Phong (the rooms in the back on the left and right side). The worship site for the Emperor and his wife is the Sung An Temple. Finally, the Hoang Trach Gate leads to the Minh Lau Bright Pavilion. It is placed on top of three terraces representing heaven, earth and water. Behind Minh Lau, there are two flower gardens designed as the Chinese character Longevity. The Minh Lau Pavilion radiates a remarkable, mystical atmosphere; it also features an anthology of selected poems of Vietnam's early 19th century.
Closer to the tomb area, the New Moon Lake (Ho Tan Nguyet) is crescent-shaped and embraces the circular wall surrounding the grave (Buu Thanh). A monumental staircase with dragon-shaped handrails and consisting of 33 stone steps leads to the sepulcher of the Emperor.
Among the emperor tombs in Hue, the Minh Mang Tomb is the most impressive one and it is certainly worth a visit (admission fee 55,000 Dong). In 1993, it was admitted in the list of world heritages by UNESCO together with some other Hue monument complexes.
Vietnam.com's tip (trip to Minh Mang Tomb)
Take a boat trip from Hue, join an organized tour or rent your private boat (boat rental office between Truong Tien Bridge and Phu Xuan Bridge, appr. 600,000 VND/ca. 33 US$ for the four hour boat ride, up to six persons). The boat will take you to the Thien Mu pagoda. Thereafter, you can continue to Dien Hon Chen and then the Minh Mang Tomb before heading back to Hue. On the way back, you could stop at Kim Long village for a bowl of the famous Bun Thit Nuong (grilled meat with rice vermicelli). Negotiate the fare and the stops you wish to make before departing.

Tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh in Hue - Vietnam 4K Travel Channel
The Tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh lies on the slopes of Chau Chu mountain, about 10 km southwest of the center of Hue. Khai Dinh was the 12th emperor of the Nguyen dynasty and Vietnam's second to last emperor. He ruled from 1916 to 1925. He was not very popular among the people, because he was considered a puppet of the French, and particularly interested in his prosperity. His reputation in the popular favor dropped dramatically when he raised taxes of the farmers by 30% for the construction and the magnificent interior of the tomb.
After his accession to the throne, Khai Dinh chose the mountain slope with a beautiful view over the country as a home in the other world.
The construction began in 1920. 11 years later the building was completed by his son Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam Nguyen Dynasty. The Tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh orientates itself at the Chinese Ming Tombs, just like the tomb of Tu Duc. However, this tomb includes a mixture of architectural styles, with many Vietnamese and French elements. At the same time, it documents the haughty manner of this king.
Over steep stairs we reach the Honor Courtyard, where we find statues of Mandarin, horse and elephant. In front is the stele pavilion.
About further laterally guided stairs we reach the grave temples.
In a sumptuously decorated room you can see a statue of the ruler that sits elevated on the grave. Valuable porcelain, Chinese vases, and pictures from the life of the emperor are on display in the side rooms.
