Jongmyo Shrine, resting place for Korea's royal spirits
유네스코 유형 문화재 소개: 종묘
Jongmyo is the oldest and most authentic of the Confucian royal shrines to have been preserved.
Dedicated to the forefathers of the Joseon dynasty founded in the 14th century here in Korea... its unique spatial layout and tradition have been preserved in its entirety to this day.
Our Kim Jung-soo takes us on a tour of the Jongmyo Shrine, Korea's UNESCO World Heritage.
At the center of metropolitan Seoul lies a solemn royal Confucian shrine.
The structure is Jongmyo Shrine, built in the year 1394 under the order of King Taejo.
Although Koreans have long been proud of their Confucian roots, no other building better embodies the Confucian philosophy of filial piety, or hyo because the shrine is the site of one of the country's most sacred ancestral rites.
The Jongmyo Jerye is a ceremonial rite held for worshipping the late kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty... and involves ritual music, called Jongmyo Jeryeak, as well as the spirit tablets of past royalty.
The ceremony used to be held five times a year, but now, it has become an annual event, held on the first Sunday in May.
The shrine was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in December of 1995 and both the ritual and ritual music were recognized by UNESCO as Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage in 2001.
The Jongmyo Jerye ceremony is comprised of three main parts.
Arriving at the shrine after a long procession, the king, accompanied by his civil and military servants, initiates an invitation and greeting of the royal spirits by reciting prayers.
Next, the spirits are entertained with music, 64 kinds of food and 64 female dancers.
Finally, the spirits are sent off to return to heaven, food and wine are shared by the officiants, and the prayer papers are burned.
Although the ceremony takes place once a year, the shrine is open to the public from March to September.
Over 500 hundred years of Joseon Dynasty's history is laid to rest, right here at the Jongmyo Shrine. Visitors interested in exploring the shrine can also use a special app called 'Jongmyo in My Hand,' to navigate through the cultural and historical site.
The augmented reality app, developed by Korea's Cultural Heritage Administration, offers narration in four languages, telling users stories and anecdotes related to the shrine's main structures.
Jongmyo Shrine contains five main houses, and each one plays an important and distinct role in the annual Jongmyo Jerye ritual.
The main setting for the ceremony is Jeongjeon Hall, which is composed of 19 spirit chambers... and houses over 49 spirit tablets for the Joseon kings and queens.
Hyangdaecheong is the room high-ranking officials used to get themselves ready for the grand ceremony.
The king and the rest of the royal family would use the three buildings of the Jaegung Area to purify body and soul before the ritual.
The king and his heir apparent would then wait for their turn to participate in the ritual at Jeonjacheong Hall, which is next to the main Jeongjeon Hall.
Yeongnyeongjeon, also known as the Hall of Eternal Peace, functions as an annex to the main Jeongjeon Hall, and houses 34 spirit tablets in 16 chambers.
In addition, the tablets of tyrannical kings such as Yeonsangun or Gwanghaegun have been excluded from the shrine as a whole, as their behaviors have been deemed below Confucian standards.
Over 180-thousand people visited Jongmyo Shrine during the first half of the year.
While the annual Jongmyo Jeyre is designed to offer the heavenly spirits consolation, it is evident that the shrine itself offers a much-needed atmosphere of serenity and peace for modern-day visitors as well.

【4K】광화문광장 Gwanghwamun Square walk in Seoul ????????
On August 1st, 2009, the redesigned Gwanghwamun Square opened to the public. With the inauguration of the square, Sejong-ro, located at the center of the 600-year-old historic city of Seoul, was transformed into a human-centered space that harmonizes with the beautiful scenery of Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukaksan Mountain.
The close to 20,000m2 Gwanghwamun Square is located at the center of Sejong-ro which connects Gwanghwamun Gate and Cheonggye Square. The square is divided into the sections, “Recovering the History of Gwanghwamun Gate Plaza,” “Reenacting Yukjo Street Plaza,” “Korea Main Plaza,” “Civil Participation Urban Culture Plaza,” “Downtown Plaza” and “Cheonggyecheon Stream Connector.”
The “Recovering the History of Gwanghwamun Gate Plaza” section is at the entrance of the plaza, where a stone base called Woldae and a statue of Haetae, a mythical unicorn-lion that is said to protect palaces from fire, have been restored. Near Sejong-ro Park is “Reenacting Yukjo Street Plaza” where Yukjo Street, the main street of old Seoul (Formally known as Hanyang) was recreated. On the side is also a miniature depiction of Yukjo Street.
The Statue of King Sejong the Great has been relocated in the “Korea Main Plaza” where Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, is projected on a fountain water screen. Between the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts and the Statue of Admiral Yi Sun-Shin is the “Civil Participation Urban Culture Plaza” with a range of attractions and services including accommodation facilities for visitors, exhibition halls, elevators, a meeting plaza, and art galleries.
“Downtown Plaza,” located near the Statue of Admiral Yi Sun-Shin, symbolizes Sejong-ro. The Square has water facilities such as a pond and pop-jet fountains. The “Cheonggyecheon Stream Connector” functions as a connecting walking path between Cheonggyecheon Stream and Gyeongbokgung Palace.
In addition, there is the “Memorial Waterway”, flowing underground water, which goes from both Gyeongbokgung and Gwanghwamun subway stations to Cheonggyecheon Stream. Plus, behind the Statue of Admiral Yi Sun-Shin is “Sunken Square” which connects Gwanghwamun subway station and the ground allowing people to access the Square more easily.
Two statues of Admiral Yi Sun-Shin and Sejong the Great, who are great and influential people in Korean history, are situated at Gwanghwamun Square where the beatification ceremony will take place. Visitors can see “Waterways of History” and “King Sejong Story” exhibitions, the latter of which highlights the achievements of King Sejong and history of Hangeul.

Road from Gwanghwamun to Seoul City Hall, South Korea
28.Sep.2019
Gwanghwamun is the main and largest gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace, in Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It is located at a three-way intersection at the northern end of Sejongno. As a landmark and symbol of Seoul's long history as the capital city during the Joseon Dynasty, the gate has gone through multiple periods of destruction and disrepair. Restoration work on the gate was finished and it was opened to the public on August 15, 2010.
Gwanghwamun was first constructed in 1395 as the main gate to Gyeongbokgung Palace, the main and most important royal palace during the Joseon Dynasty. During the 1592 Japanese invasion, it was destroyed by fire and left in ruins for over 250 years.[2][3]
Concrete Gwanghwamun with the Japanese Governor General Building, which stood until 1996.
Gwanghwamun was reconstructed in 1867 along with the rest of Gyeongbokgung Palace by the order of regent Daewongun during the reign of Emperor Gojong. The gate stood until 1926, when the Japanese government had it deconstructed and moved it just to the southeast of the current location of the National Folk Museum of Korea to make way for the massive Japanese Governor General Building.
The Korean War completely destroyed the wooden structure of Gwanghwamun, and its stone base lay in complete disrepair and neglect. In 1968, during Park Chung-hee's administration, the stone base was again relocated in front of the Japanese Governor General Building. The destroyed wooden structure was rebuilt in concrete, while the sign on Gwanghwamun was written in hangul by Park himself. Gwanghwamun remained as a concrete gate until late 2006.
