Warsaw In Your Pocket - King Sigismund's Column (Kolumna Króla Zygmunta)
Built in honour of the man who made Warsaw the capital of Poland, the column was erected back in 1664 and stands twenty two metres high. During the war the column collapsed under bombardment and the original now lies close to the Royal Castle (and is considered lucky to touch). The figure of Sigismund survived and the new column was proudly re-erected in 1949.

Sigismund's Column Kolumna Zygmunta
Sigismund's Column (Polish: Kolumna Zygmunta), erected in 1644, is located in Castle Square, Warsaw, Poland. It is one of Warsaw's most famous landmarks and one of the oldest secular monuments in northern Europe. The column and statue commemorate King Sigismund III Vasa, who in 1596 had moved Poland's capital from Kraków to Warsaw.
On the Corinthian column (which used to be of red marble), 8.5 m high, a sculpture of the King, 2.75-metres high, in archaistic armour is placed.[1] Sigismund's Column now stands at 22 metres and is adorned by four eagles. The king is dressed in armor and carries a cross in one hand and wields a sword in the other
Sigismund's Column, Kolumna Zygmunta, planned destroyed by Germany rebuilt by Poland and UdSSR
Brakujące części odlewu uzupełniła firma Braci Łopieńskich według projektu rzeźbiarskiego Józefa Gazego, a prace kamieniarskie wykonała firma J. Fedorowicza. Z powodu budowy trasy W-Z figurę przesunięto o 6 m w kierunku północno-wschodnim i lekko obrócono. Nowy trzon kolumny został wykonany z granitu strzegomskiego. Uroczyste odsłonięcie monumentu nastąpiło w dniu oddania do użytku Trasy W-Z 22 lipca 1949.
W 1965 pomnik został wpisany do rejestru zabytków

On 1 September 1944, during the Warsaw Uprising, the monument's column was demolished by the Germans, and its bronze statue was badly damaged. After the war the statue was repaired, and in 1949 it was set up on a new column, made of granite from the Strzegom mine, a couple of metres from the original site. The original broken pieces of the column can still be seen lying next to the Royal Castle.
Formally, the initiators of the reconstruction of the monument were workers of the metal industry, joined by trade unions in the construction, ceramics, related and chemical industries. In February, the Reconstruction Committee was established, headed by Henryk Golański. The reconstruction project was developed by Stanisław Żaryn. The missing parts of the casting were complemented by the company Łysieńscy Bracers according to the sculpting design of Józef Gaze , and the stonework was made by J. Fedorowicz. Because of the construction of the WZ routethe figure was moved 6 m in the north-east direction and slightly turned. The new shaft of the column was made of Strzegom granite . The ceremonial unveiling of the monument took place on the day when the WZ route was put into use on July 22, 1949.
In 1965, the monument was entered into the register of monuments
The planned destruction of Warsaw refers to the largely-realized plans by Nazi Germany to raze the city. The plan was put into full motion after the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. The uprising had infuriated German leaders who now wanted to make an example of the city, which they had long before selected for a major reconstruction as part of their plans to Germanize Central Europe.
Warsaw has to be pacified, that is, razed to the ground.
Adolf Hitler, 1944
The city must completely disappear from the surface of the earth and serve only as a transport station for the Wehrmacht. No stone can remain standing. Every building must be razed to its foundation.
SS chief Heinrich Himmler, October 17, 1944
After the Liberation of Warsaw by the Red Army and the Polish People's Army, the Old Town was meticulously rebuilt. In an effort at anastylosis, as many as possible of the original bricks were reused. However, the reconstruction was not always accurate to prewar Warsaw, sometimes deference being given to an earlier period, an attempt being made to improve on the original, or an authentic-looking facade being made to cover a more modern building. The rubble was sifted for reusable decorative elements, which were reinserted into their original places. Bernardo Bellotto's 18th-century vedute, as well as pre-World War II architecture students' drawings, were used as essential sources in the reconstruction effort; however, Bellotto's drawings had not been entirely immune to artistic licence and embellishment, and in some cases this was transferred to the reconstructed buildings.

The Royal Castle in Warsaw (Polish: Zamek Królewski w Warszawie) is a castle residency that formerly served throughout the centuries as the official residence of the Polish monarchs. It is located in the Castle Square, at the entrance to the Warsaw Old Town. The construction of the building complex in the present shape started in 1598 in the Baroque style, the castle was originally completed in 1619. Initially the complex had served as the residence of the Dukes of Masovia, and since the sixteenth century, the seat of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: the King and Parliament (Chamber of Deputies and Senate). In its long history the Royal Castle was repeatedly plundered and devastated by the invading Swedish, Brandenburgian, Prussian and Tsarist armies. The Constitution of 3 May 1791, the first of its type in Europe and the world's second-oldest codified national constitution after the 1789 U.S. Constitution, was drafted here by the Four-Year Sejm. Burned and looted by the Nazi Germans following the Invasion of Poland in 1939 and almost completely destroyed in 1944 after the Warsaw Uprising, the Castle was completely rebuilt and reconstructed; in 1965 the surviving fragments of the castle and the Royal Library, the adjacent Copper-Roof Palace and the Kubicki Arcades were registered as historical monuments by the government. Reconstruction of the castle carried out in 1971-1984 was led by the Civic Committee, responsible for the reconstruction of Warsaw. It was afforded by mainly US donations. In 1980, the Royal Castle, together with the Old Town was registered as a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today it is a historical and national monument, and is listed as a national museum visited by over 500,000 people every year. Here filmed at 1:32 P.M. on August 15, 2017.

Warsaw: Sigismund's Column at Old Town (Stare Miasto)
January 8, 2019.
To start off, I joined a WW2 in Warsaw free tour by Orange umbrella tours. Our guide was really excellent. We started here at Sigismund's column at the old town at 1:30pm. It was windy up here!!!!! and colder.... but our guide said it was not really cold that day.... Oh yeah... In Italy it was like springtime so I wasn't much used to winter temperatures anymore. hahahaha

Warszawa (Warsaw Poland) - The Castle Square, Old Town Square, Royal Castle
Warszawa (Warsaw Poland), The Castle Square (Old Town Square), Royal Castle. The Castle square and the Column of the Zygmunt Waza the third in Warsaw, Poland. Warsaw's Castle Square (Polish: Plac Zamkowy w Warszawie) is a historic square in front of the Royal Castle – the former official residence of Polish monarchs – located in Warsaw, Poland. It is a popular meeting place for tourists and locals. The Square (in a more or less triangular shape) features the landmark Sigismund's Column to the south-west and is surrounded by historic townhouses. It marks the beginning of the bustling Royal Route extending to the south. Also, view historical european martial arts.
You can see in the video: Zamek Królewski w Warszawie, The Royal Castle in Warsaw, Poland, Sigismund’s Column, Kolumna zygmunta iii wazy, Aniołowo. Krejzler G, Stare Miasto 02, Warsaw, Poland, Stare Miasto, Warsaw, poland, Wewnętrzny mur obronny, Centro Historico, Taras Widokowy
The column commemorating King Sigismund III Vasa (a work by Clemente Molli, erected in 1644) is the oldest and one of the symbolic monuments of the city. On the east side of the square stands the Royal Castle reconstructed after the devastation of World War II. It was formerly the residence of the dukes of Mazovia, and then of the Polish kings and grand dukes of Lithuania from the 16th to 18th centuries. The Germans bombed and blew it up at the beginning of World War II (September 1939), and then completely destroyed in 1944–1945 (see picture below).
In 1949 the square was connected by an escalator to the newly formed Route W-Z (East-West Route), which runs under Castle Square through a tunnel; and the viaduct (leading to the Silesian-Dąbrowski Bridge) was built in the place of viaduct Pancer, destroyed during World War II. In 1907 the viaduct was modernized [by whom?] to handle electric trams that went over there less than a year later.
This square has witnessed many dramatic scenes in Polish history. Patriotic demonstrations took place there during the period before the outbreak of the January uprising of 1863. On 27 February 1861, Russian bullets killed five people. On 8 April 1861 five rota of infantry and two troops of Russian cavalry (about 1,300 people) led by General Stepan Aleksandrovich Khrulyov carried out a bloody massacre of civilians, resulting in the deaths of more than 100 people.
During martial law, the square became the scene of the particularly brutal riot, with ZOMO police rushing through demonstrations on 3 May 1982.
PGE Narodowy - National Stadium with tours and events: The National Stadium is the largest and most innovative stadium in Poland. Opened in 2012 for soccer during the European Football Championship, the stadium now attracts more than 140,000 people every month. Come for a tour and learn about the stadium’s construction or participate in one of the diverse events regularly hosted here.
Reaching 164 feet (50 meters) above the field at its highest point, the stadium has a distinct profile that can be spotted from many areas of Warsaw. Check out the excellent view of the stadium from Zamkowy Square. Its façade is comprised of red-and-white aluminum panels, which are designed to resemble a waving Polish flag.
Notice how this nationally inspired color scheme is continued inside the stadium, where the seats are also white and red. One of the stadium’s most unique features is its retractable roof, which can open above the field.
Admire the view from Lookout Point in the upper stands. The stadium can accommodate more than 58,000 spectators. Aside from soccer games, it frequently hosts concerts and other events, with past performers such as Florence and the Machine, Paul McCartney and Coldplay.
Take advantage of the guided tours of the stadium, which are offered at regular intervals through the day. The tour includes access to a number of player-only and VIP zones. The stadium also hosts special lunches in its Business Club on Sundays, during which families can eat a meal while enjoying the view over the stadium.
Explore the area surrounding the stadium, including a municipal park where you’ll find paths for cycling, running and rollerblading. The park also hosts a variety of events throughout the summer, such as art exhibitions, so find out what is happening during your visit.
The National Stadium is located on the east bank of the Vistula River, about 2 miles (3 kilometers) from the Old Town. The stadium is open daily. Get here by bus or tram. Access to the stadium is free, but the tours have fees.

Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor
Sigismund of Luxemburg was Prince-elector of Brandenburg from 1378 until 1388 and from 1411 until 1415, King of Hungary and Croatia from 1387, King of Germany from 1411, King of Bohemia from 1419, King of Italy from 1431, and Holy Roman Emperor for four years from 1433 until 1437, the last male member of the House of Luxemburg. He was regarded as highly educated, spoke several languages and was an outgoing person who also took pleasure in the tournament.
Sigismund was one of the driving forces behind the Council of Constance that ended the Papal Schism, but which in the end also led to the Hussite Wars that dominated the later period of Sigismund's life. He was buried in Nagyvárad, Kingdom of Hungary, next to the tomb of the King Saint Ladislaus I of Hungary.

Castle Square, Warsaw, Masovian, Poland, Europe
Warsaw's Castle Square is a historic square in front of the Royal Castle the former official residence of Polish monarchs located in Warsaw, Poland. It is a popular meeting place for tourists and locals. The Square features the landmark Sigismund's Column to the south-west, and is surrounded by historic townhouses. It marks the beginning of the bustling Royal Route extending to the south. The column commemorating King Sigismund III Vasa is the oldest and one of the symbolic monuments of the city. On the east side of the square stands the Royal Castle reconstructed after the devastation of World War II. It was formerly the residence of the dukes of Mazovia, and then of the Polish kings and grand dukes of Lithuania from the 16th to 18th centuries. The Nazis bombed and blew it up by during World War II. In 1949 the square was connected by an escalator to the newly formed Route W-Z, which runs under Castle Square though a tunnel; and the viaduct was built in the place of viaduct Pancer, destroyed during World War II. In 1907 the viaduct was modernized[by whom?] to handle electric trams that went over there less than a year later. This square has witnessed many dramatic scenes in Polish history. Patriotic demonstrations took place there during the period before the outbreak of the January Uprising of 1863. On February 27, 1861, Russian bullets killed five people. On April 8, 1861 five rota of infantry and two troops of Russian cavalry led by General Stepan Aleksandrovich Khrulyov carried out a bloody massacre of civilians, resulting in the deaths of more than 100 people. During martial law the square became the scene of the particularly brutal riot, with ZOMO police rushing through demonstrations on May 3, 1982. The square is a hub for tourists and locals, who gather to watch street entertainers, participate in rallies, watch concerts and even engage in breakdancing. In 1997, at the Castle Square, U.S. President Bill Clinton gave a speech welcoming Poland to membership in NATO. Castle Square featured the United Buddy Bears exhibition in summer 2008 - an array of 140 two metre-high sculptures, each designed by a different artist, touring the world as a symbol of cultural understanding, tolerance and mutual trust. According to official information, more than 1.5 million visitors were counted.
Lazienki Park - Warsaw
Lazienki Park must be the loveliest, most enchanting city park in Europe. Right in the heart of the city, just south of the Old Town and Royal Route, it was once a country estate outside Warsaw's city walls. Its name, Royal Baths Park, comes from the bathing pavilion once located here. The estate was acquired and redesigned by the last Polish king, Stanislaw August Poniatowski, in the mid-18th century, and laid out in classical style, complete with a palace on the central lake, an ancient Roman-style amphitheatre, an orangerie and a whole wonderland of beautifully-crafted gardens.
