Exploring the History and Flavours of Kingston Ontario
We spent a romantic weekend in Kingston, Ontario touring around the waterfront, historic sites on the hop on hop off tour and finished with a wonderful walking food tour in Downtown Kingston.
One of the highlights of our visit was the Kingston Penitentiary tour. Kingston Pen is Canada's oldest prison and the former home of some of Canada's most notorious criminals.
Located halfway between Toronto and Montreal, Kingston is one of Eastern Ontario’s tourist hot spots - especially in the summer months.
Kingston is loaded with Canadian history, cool architecture, a beautiful waterfront and some of the region’s best restaurants.

It’s hard to find a vegan restaurant when we travel, but we can find places that provide vegan food or food of our choices, my new fav “Subway”.
I usually hate Monday* (still do) was bored and tired. Wasn’t able to sleep, may be it was her.
The next day, Tuesday (May 8, 2018) got up late, took bath, phone, charger, power bank, bag(a gift from my sis), purse and straight to Union Station with no plan in mind.
Standing at the ticket counter waiting for my turn and trying to connect my Samsung Galaxy S6 to free wifi (which I couldn’t). “Next“ the lady called with a sweet voice[just adding an adjective here, nothing more]. “Can you suggest me a location, I have already been to Montreal, Ottawa, Sudbury” I asked. [A moment of silence].
“Try Kingston” she said. It was 2:00pm and I was waiting for the train. This was my 3rd time taking the same train (Ottawa and Montreal) and my playlist was empty. It was a shock to me as well, the device update may have done this magic, nothing to listen, nothing to read, well that’s me “Man with No plan”(kidding). Reached Kingston at 5:30pm.
Met this cool bus driver, who took me half way in the city and guided me to downtown(hungry).
In the bus, I met a guitarist and singer who was kind enough to play 2 songs of his. I couldn’t upload the first video, as I did not click video button on my phone and did not tell him, as he would have felt bad(seriously I need to concentrate a bit more.)
It was a clean town with not much people. I must say it’s a quite place to live, in the city still feels like out of city.
“If you are planning to buy a house, I would recommend Kingston, the houses are cheap compared to Toronto and many other cities”.
It was a the season when the flies just started bugging you, yes a lot and a lot of flies, just near the water places.
Had lunch, and a free ride from Kingston to Wolfe island on a ferry. (Saw a lot of college students taking a break from the city and visiting the island). There was a cute Indian girl, I did not talk as usual.
Moving on, missed the ferry by 1 minute, it was 8:45pm and no hotels were open in the season on the island, was wandering in dark, empty streets thinking of “wrong turn” and “final destination”.. Silly me.
The ferry arrived after an hour, and now had to search for a place for the night. Went to a Tim Horton and used free wifi to search for cheapest place to stay.
Holiday Inn was just around the corner, but I did not want to spend too much on a fancy place.
I met a Toronto boy (chef) staying in Kingston for the past couple of years, Damn, to be honest I wouldn’t have believed the stories of people giving a bed to crash in their house for a stranger.
Couch/ sofa, worm blanket, television, comics all with a smile and free. If this is not friendly, I am not sure what is. Left the next morning, at 6am, and most of the tourists places were closed, (not the season yet).
Had breakfast and took the ferry ride this time, to travel on bicycle. Was planning to cover the whole “Wolfe island” in a circle, but already had the ticket to Toronto from Kingston that evening around 6:30pm.
Took a two litre Fanta bottle as the entire island had just one grocery store. Covered almost 5 hours on bicycle [Almost an year since I touched a bicycle, comment below to know my situation after 4+ hours of bicycle ride].
Reached the other end of island in 1+ hour after the start around 11am or so and took a boat to CapeVincent USA. Got down in USA and came back few minutes later.
It’s a thousand island and mine was just the first. 2pm, reached Big Sandy Bay beach, which was closed to my surprise, was about to return when gave a second thought and went and spoke to a lady standing there, was the one of the management person, who said I cannot take my bicycle inside as the beach was not officially opened, but I could go in and take a look.
She made my day. If no one was around, I say that’s were the murders happen(just kidding), it was so scary, so calm.
Only the sand to play with, not the water, it was not clean, as last years storm had made a bad scene of that beach and the flies,, wow. Still I could see 2/3 couples walking around.
The sun was too hot, may be I was just near the water.
It was 4:30pm by the time I reached the starting point, and still did not cover the whole island in circle, did not have enough time in hand.
Back to Kingston, it was an amazing view. A last place “Fort Henry” heard it was open, I called the Railway to cancel the ticket and take the last ride by 9:00pm, was successful, they did it without any extra cost.
Now I was at Fort Henry, and it was closed (-_-).. Whoever informed me it was open, go to hell. (By the way I couldn’t check the timing as I was in roaming and couldn’t use phone data.)
There was a ferry ride for the 1000 islands, but not my type.
Kingston to Union Station (Toronto).. It was a memorable trip overall.
