The BNSF Gallup Subdivision in 4K
Gallup, New Mexico, is the largest city along the BNSF Gallup Subdivision between Flagstaff, Arizona, and Albuquerque. Approximately 21,000 people call Gallup home, and it is predominantly made up Native Americans from the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni tribes.
The city was founded in 1881 as a railhead for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, and named after David Gallup, a paymaster for the railroad.
Gallup is an Amtrak train station at 201 East Highway 66 in downtown Gallup, New Mexico. It is the second busiest station in the state, with more than 16,000 boardings and alightings in 2014. The two-story station was built in the Mission Revival style in 1918. Then one of a series of Santa Fe railroad station hotels built across the southwestern and central United States by the Fred Harvey Company was connected to the depot in 1923. The fabulous El Navajo Hotel was designed by the master architect Mary Colter, blending Pueblo Revival and Art Deco styles, and decorated using Navajo sand paintings. The hotel was demolished in 1957 to widen Route 66. The depot reopened later as an unstaffed Amtrak station.
The city renovated the building in 1996 to serve as the Gallup Cultural Center to be operated by the Southwest Indian Foundation. In addition to a passenger waiting area, it is also home to the Gallup Visitor Center, which relocated to the station in 2004.
The Cultural Center houses a Storyteller Museum and Gallery of the Masters showcasing Native American Arts & Culture; the Kiva Cinema; and a coffee shop and a gift shop featuring jewelry, pottery, rugs and blankets, and other pieces by local Acoma, Zuni, Navajo, Hopi and other Native American artisans. The Museum includes exhibits on weaving, sandpainting, silversmithing, trains, and Historic Route 66.
A statue of Navajo Chief Manuelito by Tim Washburn stands in a plaza front of the Gallup Cultural Center. Next to the plaza is the Navajo Code Talker, a 12-foot bronze statue by famous Navajo/Ute sculptor Oreland Joe. The Navajo Code Talkers played a major role during World War II because the Japanese never cracked their language code.
The station is unique in that a fence guards the platform from the rest of the station. This is to prevent people getting onto BNSF's triple-tracked, high-speed, very busy Southern Transcon main line. It also makes it useless for railfanning.
The Southern Transcon is a railroad corridor between Southern California and Chicago, Illinois and serves as a BNSF Railway main line made up of 11 rail lines between Southern California and Chicago. Completed in its current alignment in 1908 by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, when it opened the Belen Cutoff in New Mexico and bypassed the steep grades of Raton Pass, it now serves as a mostly double-tracked intermodal corridor.
The Transcon is one of the most heavily trafficked rail corridors in the western United States. An average of almost 90 trains daily (over 100 trains on peak days) passed over the section between Belen and Clovis, New Mexico in 2006, each train typically 6000 to 8000 feet (1800 to 2400 meters) in length.
El Rancho Hotel, Gallup, New Mexico, is an historic hotel built by the brother of film director D.W. Griffith. It opened in 1937 as a base for movie productions. Employees were trained by the Fred Harvey Company. Famous guests include: Ronald Reagan
Jane Wyman
Spencer Tracy
Kirk Douglas

All the World Is Here: Anthropology on Display at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair
Ira Jacknis, Research Anthropologist, Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, University of California, Berkeley
The 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago was the first American fair to feature anthropology. The new discipline had its own building, supervised by Frederic Putnam, then director of Harvard University’s Peabody Museum. It competed, however, with another display of anthropology, organized by the Smithsonian Institution. In this lecture, Ira Jacknis will explore the many ways in which these exhibits offered competing versions of cultural reality and trace the innovations of anthropological display that have since become standard museum practice.

Autonomous Platform for Air and Ground Robots
Drone assistance in search and rescue missions or natural disaster response now is simplistic at best with a number of hurdles. But new research led by Purdue University engineers is working to use artificial intelligence and learning algorithms to create a platform allowing multiple drones to communicate and adapt as mission factors change.
Shaoshuai Mou and Dan DeLaurentis, professors in aeronautics and astronautics, are leading the research, which received three-year funding from Northrop Grumman Corp. The research team also includes faculty from the University of Illinois-Chicago and University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Route 66 United States
Affectionately dubbed the Mother Road, this 2,400-mile route was the first all-weather, continuously paved highway linking Chicago and Los Angeles. The storied path is legendary for spawning America's signature roadside architecture and attractions, vestiges of which remain today.

- Even more interesting was that in front of the place was literally the only place along route 66 where they specially created a 4 lane highway back in the route 66 heyday (50's or so) due to the traffic
- I'm also driving on the Interstate as it's the only route west in this part of Arizona the old, historical, Route 66
- We got in a cab and headed to our motel which was just up Route 66
- Keeping with the theme of the day, I unexpectantly stumbled along to famous Route 66 and spent the night in a hotel right on the side of the road
- From here we ploughed on down historic route 66 towards stopping along the way at a roadside trading post place full of route 66 memorabilia and souvenirs
- After the late start and bad weather, we chose to take the interstate I-44 which is over most of the original Route 66 - to follow the true route requires some real dedication and getting off the interstate for every small town, which we decided not

The Rich in America: Power, Control, Wealth and the Elite Upper Class in the United States
The American upper class describes the sociological concept pertaining to the top layer of society in the United States. About the book:
This social class is most commonly described as consisting of those with great wealth and power and may also be referred to as the Capitalist Class or simply as The Rich. Persons of this class commonly have immense influence in the nation's political and economic institutions as well as public opinion.
Many politicians, heirs to fortunes, top business executives, CEOs, successful venture capitalists and celebrities are considered members of this class. Some prominent and high-rung professionals may also be included if they attain great influence and wealth. The main distinguishing feature of this class, which is estimated to constitute roughly 1% of the population, is the source of income. While the vast majority of persons and households derive their income from salaries, those in the upper class derive their income from investments and capital gains. Estimates for the size of this group commonly vary from 1% to 2%, while some surveys have indicated that as many as 6% of Americans identify as upper class. Sociologist Leonard Beeghley sees wealth as the only significant distinguishing feature of this class and, therefore, refers to this group simply as the rich.
The members of the tiny capitalist class at the top of the hierarchy have an influence on economy and society far beyond their numbers. They make investment decisions that open or close employment opportunities for millions of others. They contribute money to political parties, and they often own media enterprises that allow them influence over the thinking of other classes... The capitalist class strives to perpetuate itself: Assets, lifestyles, values and social networks... are all passed from one generation to the next. -Dennis Gilbert, The American Class Structure, 1998
Sociologists such as W. Lloyd Warner, William Thompson and Joseph Hickey recognize prestige differences between members of the upper class. Established families, prominent professionals and politicians may be deemed to have more prestige than some entertainment celebrities who in turn may have more prestige than the members of local elites. Yet, contemporary sociologists argue that all members of the upper class share such great wealth, influence and assets as their main source of income as to be recognized as members of the same social class. As great financial fortune is the main distinguishing feature of this class, sociologist Leonard Beeghley at the University of Florida identifies all rich households, those with incomes in the top 1% or so, as upper class.
Functional theorists in sociology and economics assert that the existence of social classes is necessary in order to distribute persons so that only the most qualified are able to acquire positions of power, and so that all persons fulfill their occupational duties to the greatest extent of their ability. Notably, this view does not address wealth, which plays an important role in allocating status and power.
In order to make sure that important and complex tasks are handled by qualified and motivated personnel, society offers incentives such as income and prestige. The more scarce qualified applicants are and the more essential the given task is, the larger the incentive will be. Income and prestige which are often used to tell a person's social class, are merely the incentives given to that person for meeting all qualifications to complete an important task that is of high standing in society due to its functional value.
It should be stressed... that a position does not bring power and prestige because it draws a high income. Rather, it draws a high income because it is functionally important and the available personnel is for one reason or another scarce. It is therefore superficial and erroneous to regard high income as the cause of a man's power and prestige, just as it is erroneous to think that a man's fever is the cause of his disease... The economic source of power and prestige is not income primarily, but the ownership of capital goods (including patents, good will, and professional reputation). Such ownership should be distinguished from the possession of consumers' goods, which is an index rather than a cause of social standing. -Kingsley Davis and Wilbert E. Moore, Principles of Stratification.

Assemblyman Honoring Marine Corps Veteran Who Continues to Give to His Community
Sacramento, CA - Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles) honored Khoa Nquyen as Veteran of the Year for the 43rd Assembly District. Mr. Nguyen returned to Glendale after serving his country as U.S. Marine in a humanitarian mission in Africa for two years and has founded a non-profit organization that provides free lessons to disadvantaged youth teaching the them how to play tennis, practice yoga, and even how to read. I want to use my talents and experiences to help under privileged children, they need it, said Nquyen. Growing up, people always want to feel a sense of self-worth. I felt that in Africa.
I picked Khoa because I believe it is of paramount importance to recognize a new generation of young men and women who are serving our country, said Gatto. He is an inspiration to our veterans that have served in the military and have the opportunity to use the tools they've acquired in military service to selflessly give back to their community.
Mike Gatto is the Assistant Speaker Pro Tempore of the California State Assembly. He represents the cities of Burbank, Glendale, and parts of Los Angeles, including Los Feliz, North Hollywood, Silver Lake, Toluca Lake, Valley Glen, and Van Nuys.

Who is winning the artificial intelligence race?
Read the full story on the Stanford Engineering website:
In a recent talk at Stanford, Kai-Fu Lee says China has taken the lead. Lee is a venture capitalist and author of “AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley and the New World Order.”
Who’s winning the worldwide competition to develop and exploit artificial intelligence? Not the U.S., says Kai-Fu Lee, a venture capitalist and author of AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley and the New World Order.
Although researchers and tech companies in the U.S. hold the lion’s share of AI patents and are responsible for key breakthroughs in the field, the game has changed, and China is taking the lead. “We are now in the implementation phase. It’s a question of who can build the fastest,” Lee said during a recent talk at the AI Salon series presented by the Stanford Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) Initiative and the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab (SAIL).
Building the fastest doesn’t necessarily require the top tier of researchers. “For most applications, you don’t really need super AI experts. Young AI engineers will suffice,” he said. And China has them.
Indeed, the last really significant breakthrough in AI – deep learning – was nine years ago, Lee said. “Without big breakthroughs, it is hard for the U.S to maintain its lead because AI technologies are reasonably well understood,” he said.
Machine learning and artificial intelligence rely on data – lots of data – to function. And that’s where China has its biggest advantage. Not only does China have a huge population, its residents lead by far the United States in the use of mobile applications and payments. Every click, every sale, generates data. “If data is the new oil, China is the new OPEC,” Lee said.
What’s more, the business environment in China is friendlier to AI companies, with more government support and less regulation than in the U.S.
China’s advances in AI haven’t gone unnoticed by investors. Last year, 48 percent of the venture capital money directed to AI went to China, compared with 38 percent invested in U.S. ventures, Lee said.
There are, of course, challenges posed by AI, not the least of which is the threat of job losses, a point made by Lee and two other speakers at the Salon: Susan Athey, a professor of economics at Stanford Graduate School of Business, and Erik Brynjolfsson, director of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy.
Even so, the stakes in the AI race are extremely high. Over the next 11 years, AI and related technologies will account for some $11 trillion in economic activity, a sum larger than the combined economies of China and India, Lee said.
White House Down
Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation's government falling into chaos and time running out, it's up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.
