30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today on New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year web series we are visiting Zealandia in Wellington. Zealandia is a wildlife sanctuary in New Zealand with a protective predator proof fence. Native birds are abundant here where it is safe from invasive pests. We learn a lot about the native ecosystem and the threat of introduced pests at the Zealandia Museum.
After being given a map of multiple walks around Zealandia in Wellington, we start walking to see more and more New Zealand birds. We see kaka, tui, takahe, North Island robin, shags and so much more!
Feeding stations in Zealandia allow you to see New Zealand native birds up-close.
We also bump into one of the Zealandia Ecosanctuary volunteers who gives us a quick tour of Zealandia to explain more about the native plants and birds of New Zealand. We even see the weta, a giant New Zealand insect.
If you want to learn about New Zealand’s eco-system, it’s native wildlife and the New Zealand birds, then Zealandia Ecosanctuary in Wellington is a great place to start to get informed.
So what do you think of Zealandia in Wellington? Is this wildlife sanctuary in Wellington a place you would put on your New Zealand bucket list?

Cab View - Wellington to Masterton – GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition
In this video we visit Wellington, New Zealand, served by one of the most scenic commuter rail networks in the world. The system has been upgraded with new Electric trains, track upgrades and the overhead wires have been extended as far as Waikanae on the North Island Main Trunk Railway. During the peak periods the electric and diesel trains are busy transporting commuters to and from work, outside the peaks these regular modern trains are a great way for tourists to explore the Wairarapa, Johnsonville and Kapiti Coast lines. Maybe catch a train to Featherston to visit the Fell Locomotive Museum and learn about the legendary Rimutaka incline, or take an evening train along the scenic Kapiti coast to Paekakariki at sunset, the Johnsonville line, once part of the original North Island Main Trunk railway is a steeply graded, twisting line that climbs high into the Wellington suburbs offering great views over the city before plunging into a series of short tunnels to emerge onto a precarious ledge cut into the steep sided valley (try to imagine massive steam locomotives struggling with heavy trains over this tortuous route before it was bypassed by a tunnel in 1937).
We join the driver of our the diesel locomotive for a trip over the Wairarapa line to Masterton, skirting Wellington harbour on a beautiful sunny day, before making our way up the Hutt valley, climbing into the surrounding hills to enter the 5.5 mile (8.8 km) tunnel beneath the Rimutaka mountains, emerging to a splendid vista over Wairarapa lake, before descending to the plains far below, continuing through fertile farmland and attractive settlements to Masterton.
I used 3 different action cameras to make sure I captured this memorable return journey between Wellington and Masterton. Originally I intended to use the footage from which ever camera gave the best result, but as it turned out even though the cameras filmed the same trip, the perspective from each was quite different, leading me to decide on uploading two outward and two return trips.
overnight offshore fishing for bluefin tuna south island west coast New Zealand - bluenose, sharks
Weka, Mike and Josh head off the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand to catch a northern pacific Bluefin Tuna, when we get out top the Hokitika Trench we discover the Hoki COmmercial trawlers have left the area due to low fish numbers. This area is a spawning ground for Hoki and the fishery has been decimated from overfishing. The trawlers have now gone to the east coast of the south island to the juvenile Hoki fishery to attempt ti fill their quota. We dont catch any tuna but end up with a few tablefish caught over the foul ground where the trawlers cant trawl.
Check out the specs on the boat
New Coastal Pacific Train 2014 - Part 1 - from the Drivers Cab and Open Air Observation Carriage.
Enjoy a trip on one of Kiwi Rails Scenic Journeys aboard the Coastal Pacific train from Picton to Christchurch (New Zealand). Part 1 covers the line from Picton to Lake Grassmere Salt Works, taking in the Awatere River double deck bridge, the steep grade to Dashwood Pass and the purple evaporation ponds at Grassmere. This journey is a must for rail fans visiting South Island and a great way for all visitors to see the magnificent coastline where the towering Kiakoura Mountains meet the mighty Pacific Ocean.
New Zealand Honeymoon || Exploring Wellington - Oriental Bay, Te Papa, & Botanic Gardens
November 10, 2019
We woke up in our campground in the town of Ashhurst, and despite the cemetery next to us and the natural disaster alarm going off at 2 am, we had a great night of sleep!
The rain started on our drive South to Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. I desperately needed a shower so thank goodness Owen surprised me with a cute AirBnb in Oriental Bay.
We explored Wellington, despite the rain, and had amazing food and drinks on the water. We explored a couple exhibits at the Te Papa Museum and I honestly don't think I have ever been so impressed by a museum. It is free admission and still one of the coolest things I saw while in New Zealand!
We ended our night taking the Wellington Cable Car up a huge hill to get a great view of the city below, and we walked back to our AirBnb through the Botanic Gardens.
We also planned many of our South Island adventures because tomorrow, we head SOUTH! :)
