Klezmer music at Restaurant Ariel in Krakow, Poland
On a very short trip to Krakow, Poland, I had the chance to have dinner at the kosher Jewish Restaurant Ariel in Kazimierz, Krakow's Jewish neighborhood, and enjoy a concert by a live band playing traditional Klezmer music and Balkan music.

Klezmer Music in Krakow
Krakow's Jewish population was all but completely wiped out by the Nazis. Today, there remains a tiny core of Jews in Krakow's Kazimierz district. Out of the original 70,000 Jews living in Krakow back in 1939 only about 200 remain according to official Polish statistics although according to Jonathan Ornstein, executive director of JCC Krakow, that figure is actually closer to 2,000 and steadily rising. The very heart of the Jewish District is ulica Szeroka where there are a number of synagogues still in use as well as a number of Jewish restaurants, shops, bookstores, museums, and monuments. At night, this Jewish focal point turns even more vibrantly alive as many of the restaurants here feature live Klezmer music. Most people walk the strip, listen, and choose the music they like before settling down for a meal. We did the same. After auditioning a number a restaurants, the sounds coming from Restauracja Ester were authentically Klezmer so we decided to eat here. The cuisine is Jewish and the surroundings were like eating in a Jewish grandmother's cozy dining room. The food was excellent.
