A Day In Kolkata (calcutta) TRAM MUSEUM | SMARANIKA THE LIVING HERITAGE | KOLKATA TRAM
HELLO YOUTUBERS'
PRESENTING SMARANIKA THE TRAM WITH MUSEUM INSIDE...
The first horse-drawn trams in India ran for 2.4 miles (3.9 km) between Sealdah and Armenian Ghat Street on 24 February 1873. The service was discontinued on 20 November of that year.[2] The Calcutta Tramway Company was formed and registered in London on 22 December 1880. Metre-gauge horse-drawn tram tracks were laid from Sealdah to Armenian Ghat via Bowbazar Street, Dalhousie Square and Strand Road. The route was inaugurated by the Viceroy, Lord Ripon, on 1 November 1880. In 1882, steam locomotives were deployed experimentally to haul tram cars. By the end of the century, the company owned 166 tram cars, 1,000 horses, seven steam locomotives and 19 miles of track.
on trams within a tram is quite fascinating.
Inaugurated in 2014, the Kolkata Tram Museum’s present collection includes photos and write-ups of the earliest trams like Horse-Drawn tram cars, Disinfectant Trams, Flat Wagon Trams, Omni Bus, Watering Tram cars and more. Other exhibits include Old Tram Tickets, Tram Passes, pens used by tram conductors, coins, armlets, Coin Exchanger Machine, conductor caps and various tram parts like Pull-Off Springs, Governor Switch and more.
Displays of newspaper cuttings and pamphlets of various festivals around the world celebrating tram journeys and posters glorifying trams of Kolkata in literature are on display too. Overall, the whole exhibition is very interesting and gives a brief idea of the history of nearly 150 years of Kolkata’s very own trams. After all this, if you want to sip a cup of hot coffee and watch a documentary on Kolkata’s trams then take a seat in the cafeteria and spend a few quiet moments.

Kolkata (Calcutta) Trams - Esplanade Depot and a Ride on a New Tram Car
CTC (Calcutta Tramways Corporation) operates the tram network of Kolkata. Kolkata is the only city in India still having a tram network. The first electric tram to run in Calcutta was in 1902, the first in Asia. Horse and steam engine hauled trams were in service by the 1880's. By 1943 the track length of the tram line network had been expanded to over 67 kms but since then has gradually decreased. The rolling stock is of vintage type (old SLC and SLC and some new trams with a polycarbonate ceiling and larger windows, better lighting and piped radio/music). The olders tram cars are around 70 years old. The tram ride in this video is in one of the newer tram cars. CTC also runs a few city bus routes.

Trams in Kolkata
Kolkata (Calcutta) is the only city in India still having trams as a means of public transport. The vintage tram network has in recent years diminished to a point where only 8 routes are in operation in 2018. Daily ridership is reported to have fallen to about 15 000 whereas in 2010 it was over 70 000 and earlier on a lot more. Unless more investment and planning for rehabilitation of the tram network incl. upgraded rolling stock is implemented the trams of Kolkata could become a historic relic in the coming years.
Four metro rail lines are presently under construction in Kolkata where large investments have been made.
WBTC (West Bengal Transport Corp. Ltd) operates the tram network of Kolkata. The older tram cars are around 70 years old. WBTC also runs an extensive city bus network.
This video was filmed mostly in 2010 (one clip in 2006).

Must Do & Ride in Kolkata for the travelers , tourists .
The Calcutta Tramways Company (1978) Limited (CTC) is a state run company which runs trams and buses in and around Kolkata(formerly known as Calcutta) in West Bengal, India. The Kolkata tram is the only operating tramway in India and the oldest operating electric tram in Asia, running since 1902.
Trams were the brainchild of the then-Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon. His motives were to ensure better public transport for the native people and better passage of goods from ports and dockyards to their respective destinations.
First horse drawn trams in India ran a 2.4-mile (3.9 km) between Sealdah and Armenian Ghat Street on 24 February 1873. The service was however discontinued on 20 Nov. The Calcutta Tramway Co. Ltd was formed and registered in London on 22 December 1880. By the end of the nineteenth century the company owned 166 tram cars, 1000 horses, seven steam locomotives and 19 miles of tram tracks. In 1900, electrification of the tramway, and reconstruction of tracks to 4 ft 81⁄2 in (1,435 mm) (standard gauge) began .
Ever since the first tram which rolled out in the tracks way back in Feb 24th 1873 this sturdy built electrically driven carriage has gone through the wears & tears with the ravages of time, carving out our golden phases of history. Braving out the illustrious moments of our Indian freedom struggle, World wars, Kolkata tram had come a long way and still its wheel continue to pave its way as a rail witness of the present era and hopefully for the future too. Having nurtured the rich heritage of this city of joy, kolkata tramway has itself turned into an unique heritage of its own with a different essence.
Down the memory lane, when the tram made its maiden journey from Sealdah to Armenian ghat, It left everyone spell bounded. In course of time, the trams has gone through vast modernisations but still it has rolled down the tracks like the tickings of Bigben. Having witnessed our glorious past in the rails, this tireless heritage has itself unfurled another golden chapter in our historical book. No doubt Kolkata tram can be designated as a priceless pride having served as a rail witness from the era of Governor generals, maharajas to our present Kolkata & without which the Kolkatan history would remain incomplete. Kolkata Tramways-‘ wheels that writes & sights our glorious past, present & our future too’
The Calcutta Tramways Company operates Tram services in 25 different routes across the streets of Kolkata (Five routes are temporarily suspended for underground sewerage relining work by KMC and concretization of tram tracks by HRBC). The Tramways network is spread with a radius of about 10 km from the centre of the city.
Tram tracks are spread over a length of about 57.17 km Double Track out of which about 3.2 km are reserved only for Tram movement. The rest portions are unreserved i.e, used by other vehicles alongwith Tram and it is mostly concretized except 5.43 km. The tram tracks are mostly laid at grade with the surface of road.
Presently there are 270 Tram cars including 4 special cars. 189 out of these are Steel Body Cars procured during the Calcutta Urban Transport Project in 1982-1985, which are the youngest of the family. There are 56 Wooden Body ( Articulated ) Tram cars procured during 1940-1950. Another 21 SLC(Stream Lined Cars, both steel and wooden body) were also procured between 1940-1950.
Tram cars move using 550 V DC which is converted from 6KV AC supply, converted and distributed from 10 Sub Stations located at Shyambazar, Rajabazar, M.G.Road, Dalhousie, Esplanade, Hastings, Mominpur, Kalighat, Gariahat and Nonapukur.
The distributed supply is carried through an Over Head Network above the Tram tracks with proper support by Traction Poles and Brackets.
Later, an experimental venture was made by renovating one Tram car with innovative outlook in our Nonapukur Workshop which is running satisfactorily in our daily fleet. Following this experiment, 24 more tram cars have been renovated in similar fashion in the workshop. This has been a matter of pride for CTC. In addition to that four single bogie tram cars, including two with air-conditioned facility, named “Charaibeti” and “Danadhanya” have also been manufactured by our workshop indigenously.
CTC has a full fledged Central Workshop carrying out major renovations and manufacturing different accessories required for Tram Car maintenance. Besides, there are 7 depots located at different places for carrying out scheduled maintenance and minor

কলকাতার ট্রামের ১৫০ বছরের ইতিহাস । History of tram in CalcuttaKolkata

City Trains in Calcutta, India - Calcutta Trams
Trams (trains that run on tracks on roads) operated in Calcutta (Kolkata) by the Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC).
All current trams consist of 2 coaches mounted on 3 bogies, each bogie having 2 axles and 4 wheels. They run on Standard Gauge tracks and draw power from overhead wires.
Railway transportation on Calcutta's roads dates back to 1873, although it has undergone several changes in gauge and has seen traction power derived from horses, coal-steam and electricity.
