Kazan City Today - Russian Language Day (6 June 2019)
The Institute of Philology and Intercultural Communications, Kazan Federal University again held an annual Russian Language Day commemoration event held on June 6. Determination of June 6 as the Russian Language Day is a tribute to Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin who was born on June 6, 1799. Russian is one of the six languages used officially by the United Nations Council.
For the Russians, Pushkin was a poet, scriptwriter, and Russian prose writer. He put the basics of realistic Russian trends. In addition, Pushkin is known as a critic and literary theorist, historian, publicist, and the most authoritative literary figure of the first third of the nineteenth century. Pushkin is not only known in the Russian Federation and ex-Soviet countries but also almost all over the world.
At this celebration, where the memorial of Pushkin's birth entered the age of 220 years, it was a long enough period for the development of Russian literature.
I and some foreign students, who are studying at Kazan Federal University, were involved in the flash mob activity reading Pushkin's poetries. Playing my acoustic guitar, I sang a poem with the theme I Love You or in Russian Я вас любил.
After participating in flash mob poetry reading at the Institute of Philology and intercultural communication, Kazan Federal University, with Mrs. Bochina Tatyana Gennadvna, the head of department I.A. Baudouin de Courtenay Higher School of Russian Language and Intercultural Communication, some lecturers and foreign students, we put flowers on the Pushkin statue, which is located next to the Kazan opera house Musa Jalil.” In this location, we met with several Indonesian students from the Kazan State Energy University campus who are studying in the Russian language preparation faculty. Then, we together entered the theater opera and ballet building Musa Jalil to watch the big concert (День русского языка). While entering the theatre opera and ballet building, we were welcomed by classical music from several musicians of the mini-chamber.
The concert started at 13.00 to 14.30 (local time).

The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) (Russian: Республика Саха (Якутия), tr. Respublika Sakha (Yakutiya), IPA: [rʲɪsˈpublʲɪkə sɐˈxa jɪˈkutʲɪjə]; Sakha: Саха Өрөспүүбүлүкэтэ, translit. Sakha Öröspüübülükete, IPA: [saˈxa øɾøsˈpyːbylykete], Sakha Republic), simply Sakha (Yakutia) (Russian: Саха (Якутия); Sakha: Саха Сирэ, translit. Sakha Sire), is a federal subject of Russia (a republic). It has a population of 958,528 (2010 Census), consisting mainly of ethnic Yakuts and Russians.
Comprising half the Far Eastern Federal District, it is the largest subnational governing body by area in the world at 3,083,523 square kilometers (1,190,555 sq mi) and the eighth largest territory in the world, if the republics of Russia were compared with other countries. It is larger than Argentina and just smaller than India. Its capital is the city of Yakutsk. It is also well known for its extreme and severe climate, with the lowest temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere being recorded in Verkhoyansk and Oymyakon, and regular winter averages commonly being below −35 °C (−31 °F) in several population centers, including Yakutsk. The hypercontinental tendencies also result in very warm summers for much of the republic.

Rimantas Siparis sings Farlaf‘s rondo from ‘Ruslan and Lyudmila’ by Glinka
A Lithuanian bass Rimantas Siparis (1927-1990) began his artistic career in drama theatre, in 1944. In 1948, Siparis graduated from Vilnius Conservatoire and immediately joined the Lithuanian Opera. Until 1977 he sang the main bass roles there (Méphistophélès and Boris Godunov, Prince Galitsky and King Philip II, to mention a few), in 1977-1989 he was an artistic director of the theatre. Siparis won the National Prize in 1960 and was the Lithuanian National Artist since 1964.
In this video, Siparis presents a beautifully expressive Lithuanian language version of the Russian original text. More of his recordings can be found at (the vinyl was published in 1970).

SUMMARY
=======
The Russo-Japanese War (Russian: Русско-японская война, translit. Russko-japonskaja vojna; Japanese: 日露戦争, translit. Nichirosensō / Нитиросенсо̄; 1904–05) was fought between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria and Korea. The major theatres of operations were the Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden in Southern Manchuria and the seas around Korea, Japan and the Yellow Sea.
Russia sought a warm-water port on the Pacific Ocean for its navy and for maritime trade. Vladivostok was operational only during the summer, whereas Port Arthur, a naval base in Liaodong Province leased to Russia by China, was operational all year. Since the end of the First Sino–Japanese War in 1895, Japan feared Russian encroachment on its plans to create a sphere of influence in Korea and Manchuria. Russia had demonstrated an expansionist policy in the Siberian Far East from the reign of Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century. Seeing Russia as a rival, Japan offered to recognize Russian dominance in Manchuria in exchange for recognition of Korea as being within the Japanese sphere of influence. Russia refused and demanded Korea north of the 39th parallel to be a neutral buffer zone between Russia and Japan. The Japanese government perceived a Russian threat to its plans for expansion into Asia and chose to go to war. After negotiations broke down in 1904, the Japanese Navy opened hostilities by attacking the Russian Eastern Fleet at Port Arthur, China, in a surprise attack.
Russia suffered multiple defeats by Japan, but Tsar Nicholas II was convinced that Russia would win and chose to remain engaged in the war; at first, to await the outcomes of certain naval battles, and later to preserve the dignity of Russia by averting a humiliating peace. Russia ignored Japan's willingness early on to agree to an armistice and rejected the idea to bring the dispute to the Arbitration Court at The Hague. The war concluded with the Treaty of Portsmouth, mediated by US President Theodore Roosevelt. The complete victory of the Japanese military surprised world observers. The consequences transformed the balance of power in East Asia, resulting in a reassessment of Japan's recent entry onto the world stage. It was the first major military victory in the modern era of an Asian power over a European one. Scholars continue to debate the historical significance of the war.
