KRUGER GUIDE -
SAFARI GUIDE IN SA -
When I was planning my trip to South Africa and the safari component to our honeymoon, one thing that I've said before is that it was actually pretty challenging because there just isn't a lot of information out there about what it's actually like to be on a safari in Kruger National Park. Sure there were blog posts about it but when it came to YouTube videos providing a walkthrough of the park, camp life, and self-drive, there just wasn't much out there. Sure this video may not cover every single aspect of Kruger but for someone that stayed there for 3 nights and 4 days, it gives you a look into what our experience was like and the two of the larger camps we experienced - Skukuza and Lower Sabie.

South Africa Part 1 - Johannesburg, Panorama Route, and Kruger Park
This is part 1 of our trip to South Africa. We started in Johannesburg, drove to Pretoria, enjoyed the Panorama Route, and ended in the Kruger Park.
Stay tuned for part 2!
3 day Private Lodge and Kruger Park Tour
3 day tour to Kruger Park with private lodge
Kruger National Park! How to do a safari in the Kruger National Park? (By car or guided tour)
A safari to the Kruger National Park! Is that the right decision? YES!
We booked our tour here (a combo ticket hop on hop off bus + Safari tour):
We booked our tour with Baz Bus which are offering a four day safari trip to the Kruger National Park operated by Selous African Safari and Tours. So how is the tour?
Campsite:
The campsite is great. You can sleep in a proper room or in tents. Selous African Safari and Tours offers a campsite with electricity, clean water, showers, toilets, great food (seriously the food is the best - the have wonderful vegetarian options). They even have a great dinning area now and a pool to cool off!
Kruger National Park:
You enter the Kruger National Park at the Orpen Gate. The entrance fee for the park is included of course. When we visited the Kruger National Park in February, it was not that crowded. We saw a lot of great animals (almost saw the big five): elephants, giraffes, lions, rhinos, hippos, bulls, zebras, .... we only missed the leopard. You will definetily see great wildlife! In total you will spend two days in the Kruger National Park! Plus one day arriving and one day leaving! We also visited an animal shelter and Blyde River Canyon.
Baz Bus:
You can buy a combo ticket - hop on hop off ticket (from Johannesburg to Cape Town) + Kruger National Park.

African Wildlife Safari at Kruger National Park, South Africa
If you gave me a list of only 10 more bucket-list travel experiences I could potentially have for the rest of my life, experiencing an African wildlife safari would be right near the top. After making the long bus journey from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park, I couldn't believe this - once in a lifetime - experience was finally about to happen. Waking up at the crack of dawn, we boarded our Land Rover and drove off in the dark to the gates of Kruger National Park. It wasn't long before we witnessed sunrise and our first animal encounter spotting prancing impalas.

The highlights of our first day of safari included spotting a pride of Lions including getting up close views of lioness affectionately licking her cubs and an Alpha male resting in the foreground. Lunchtime, was equally as eventful as I was bombed (shitted on) by two birds eager to grab scraps of our meal.
As the day progressed we spotted giraffes on a frequent basis. Two male giraffes fought swinging their heads violently at one another often landing direct blows to knees. Out of all the violent animal encounters I could have potentially witnessed, gazing at fighting giraffes was not something I would have ever anticipated.
The day ended with an epic sunset featuring a generous portion of crackers, cookies, cheese and wine. On the way back, when the sun had gone down, we used a flashlight to try and spot more animals. Our guide Lloyd, has an acutely trained eye and without his assistance we may have only spotted impalas ourselves ;)
African Wildlife Safari at Kruger National Park, South Africa Travel Video Transcript:
Okay, so today is the big day. Yesterday afternoon we reached the outskirts of Kruger National Park and today we're actually going in to spot some of the wildlife. So we're going in for a sunrise drive. It is really earlier. It is about 5:15 am right now. We're going to head into the park and - yeah - it is safari time!
Okay, so we finally reached the park and I'm going to give you a little tour of our cool truck for the day. Come on over. Come on in.
Make that big climb up there. Yeah, I'm in.
One thing that totally surprised me was just how close we got to the lions. I think it was only about 10 meters away from the road.
So they were really docile and the lioness was just sleeping and cleaning its cubs and in the back there was the big alpha male just stretching and yawning. It was surreal.
So that's been an amazing safari so far. It is only 10 in the morning and we've already seen more wildlife than I ever imagined. We saw lions, elephants, wildebeest. Oh, gosh more than I can even remember. Yeah, it was amazing and we were able to get up close and have a good look at them. So it has been so much fun.
So tell us what happened to you at lunchtime today? So the most ridiculous thing happened to me during lunch. A bird shit right here. It ricochet of off my shoulder all the way down to here. And while I was still recovering from the shock from that another bird shitted on this side. So I got hit on both shoulders but apparently if a bird shits on you it is good luck. So I have a double dose of good luck. Maybe that means I'm going to see cheetahs this afternoon. Woo hoo!
Right now we're visiting a private game reserve to see even more cool wildlife. And what caught us for a total surprise is that we saw so many giraffes. Apparently this is the most giraffes have ever been spotted out here.
So we saw them walk right in front of our vehicle and we even saw a couple of them fighting. They were swinging their heads at each other. It was completely bonkers.
Yeah, so overall it has been an amazing day. We saw more animals than we ever expected. And what a beautiful way to wrap up the day. Now we're just going to watch the sunset, drink some wine and enjoy some cheese. And do it all over again tomorrow.
This is part of our Travel in South Africa series. We're making a series of videos showcasing South African culture, South African arts, South African foods, South African religion, South African cuisine and South African people.

Southern Africa Family Trip vlog 2019: Victoria Falls, South Africa, Cape Town, Kruger National Park
In August 2019, we took an amazing family trip to South Africa and Zimbabwe. Our journey began in Victoria Falls, where we swam in Devil's Pool and made day trips into Zambia and to Chobe National Park in Botswana. Then, we flew down to Cape Town. We visited Table Mountain, Langa Township, and the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, before taking a day trip out to the beautiful Cape of Good Hope. We spent 2 nights in Simonstown, and loved visiting the friendly penguins at Boulders Beach! Finally, we flew to Johannesburg, drove the gorgeous Panorama Route to Kruger National Park, and spent 5 nights on safari, splitting our time between Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge and Hamilton's Tented Camp on the Mluwati Concession.
We saw incredible wildlife and stunning landscapes, and met some of the friendliest people! Africa definitely has our hearts, and we hope to one day be back.
Filmed on GoPro Hero 7 Black, Canon 77D and iPhone 6.

5 Safari Camps to Visit in South Africa
5 Safari Camps to Visit in South Africa
TRAVEL HUSTLE REPEAT GEAR ►
MY FILM MAKING KIT ►
During my trip to South Africa I had the chance to spend over two weeks in the African bush. I visited five different safari camps, four were in Sabi Sands and the Klaserie Nature Reserve. The fifth one is located in the Gondwana Game Reserve. Here are the top 5 safari camps to visit in South Africa.
Umkumbe Safari Lodge is located just outside the iconic Kruger National Park, in the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve. Umkumbe is considered to be one of the best wildlife viewing regions in all of South Africa. Their incredible lodge boasts 9 rooms offering guests comfort and luxury while still having the real “African” experience. Enjoy air-conditioning, indoor/outdoor bathrooms, full mosquito netting in all rooms, a pool, fitness center and a number of other amenities, plus some amazing outdoor dining and lounge areas with stunning views of the surrounding wildlife.
Africa on Foot in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve just outside of Kruger National Park. A 5-room stay, this boutique camp can accommodate up to 14 people with some excellent living quarters and incredible daily excursions. Africa on Foot can accommodate all sorts of travelers, including families with young children. Private, specialized walks are available for those who might be too young to enjoy the normal, scheduled walks and drives. One the coolest and most unique outdoor packages, book a stay at Africa on Foot the next time you’re in South Africa for an experience that you’ll never forget!
nDutzi Safari Camp inside the Klaserie Game Reserve is a small four-room (8 person maximum) safari camp, this memorable stay provides guests an intimate safari experience in an untouched corner of the greater Kruger National Park. Comfortable, personalized rooms and a relaxed lodging atmosphere are balanced by a vast & wild private reserve, where guests can spot some of Africa’s most incredible wildlife. For travelers looking to have a nearly private safari experience in an intimate setting, a stay at the nDutzai Safari Camp in Klaserie Game Reserve is an absolute must!
nThambo Tree Camp in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, an area situated in the heart of the Kruger National Park. The location provides Big Five safaris and walking safaris, offering guests the chance to admire hippos, giraffes, zebras and a variety of birds. nThambo Tree Camp prefers to have an open camp to allow animals to pass through unlike other parks that fence animals out. Their mission is to bring people closer to nature, which is why it isn't a mere a hotel in the bush, but rather a way to have an authentic bush experience.
Kwena Lodge inside the Gondwana Game Reserve is only 4 hours from Cape Town and a half hour from Mossel Bay, this conveniently located 11,000-hectare reserve is a fantastic place to catch some of the region’s most iconic animals. Kwena Lodge can accommodate all sorts of travelers with their 13 huts (suitable for two) and 13 villas (four to eight people), so no matter what size of group visiting, there’s bound to be room for all.
For those looking to go on safari, Kwena offers game drives (where everything from the Big 5 to Endangered Black Rhinos & Cape Mountain Zebras can be spotted) as well as game walks and junior ranger programs (perfect for children.) With a moderate climate for most of the year, beaches, shark cage diving and other big attractions just nearby, Kwena Lodge/Gondwana Game Reserve is an unforgettable experience and convenient stop off for anyone traveling through South Africa.
We hope you enjoyed the top 5 safari camps to visit in South Africa!

5 Safari Camps to Visit in South Africa
A Tour of Kruger Park - Johannesburg
The world famous Kruger Park lies to the north east of Johannesburg - stretching upwards through Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces, to the Zimbabwe border in the North. It lies within and forms the major part what is loosely known as the Greater Kruger Area. The superb freeways all the way from Joburg to The Park ensure that it is is an easy drive away from Joburg. Should you prefer to fly, a 45 minute flight will take you from OR Tambo International Airport to the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport or the Hoedspruit International Airport, which are situated near to the Southern and Central borders of the Park, respectively.

Driving to Kruger National Park from Johannesburg
A drive I did in a rental car from Johannesburg Airport to Kruger National Park. I highly advise staying at a lodge nearby the airport on arrival and taking the drive after you are well rested the next morning!
It's a beautiful, scenic drive and can be done safely.

Kruger Park 4 day Safari South Africa Trip
Our second part of our vacation in South Africa was to Kruger Park. We started and ended in Johannesburg, so I've put that in separate videos and in this video I'd like to share most of the wonderful animal sightings we had.
There is no way to show what it is like to be there in person and actually being face to face with a wild lion or elephant, but I hope I was able to give a good feeling of what our trip was like in Kruger Park.
I would love to hear what you think about the travel videos, I know they are not run related like most of my videos, but I want to share this beautiful experience with you. Since I travel for a lot of my races I would love to hear if this is something you'd like me to share more often.

Kruger Park Safari | South Africa | Episode 3
Today we went on our first safari, and it was awesome! South Africa!
AMAZING & SCARY African Safari Self-Drive Experience at Kruger National Park | Honeymoon VLOG 4
Once we finished doing our loop around the Panorama Route, we entered the world-famous Kruger National Park from the Paul Kruger Gate and that started our 4 day 3 night epic adventure of self-drive.
Kruger was AMAZING because of all of the special moments we were able to witness whether it was in our SUV, driving around randomly or with one of the game drives run by the park itself. Top 3 sightings have to be: 1) Baby elephant, 2) Hippo with all the turtles on back, and 3) Herd of water buffaloes crossing the road.
Kruger was also SCARY because of the lone huge cockroach that we saw in our first bungalow we stayed at in Skukuza. In the video you'll see me recount the story of the night we checked in. We unfortunately weren't able to catch it but resorted to using one of the towels to stuff the bottom of the bathroom door as that was the last place we saw it.
I think one thing we kept asking ourselves while we were there was which experience we liked better. The conclusion we came to was that doing self-drive is a VERY DIFFERENT experience. While we loved how we were pampered at Elephant Plains and that they could go off-road to see the animals really up close, there was a bit more sense of adventure with Kruger because you were in control of what route you wanted to take everytime you went out. Kruger being a massive park, there are definitely a lot more wildlife to spot and the type of terrain and landscapes very much over Sabi Sands which was more or less the same throughout. Doing self-drive is also going to save you a lot more money over a private reserve even though Elephant Plains was quite affordable when comparing to others. The issue with Kruger though is that you're not going to have the benefit of having a tracker to spot animals so a lot of times I felt like we would drive for hours and unless the animal was near the side of the road or if we saw a cluster of cars, it was very hard to spot anything far away.
Lastly I think it'd be valuable to talk about the game drives offered by Kruger. While it was nice to be on a guided trip while we were there, the experience was definitely subpar compared to the private reserve. Instead of a truck of 9, we were on these massive trucks of 20+. What was annoying about these trips is how frenzied it was when it came time to boarding the truck. It's pretty much first come first serve so everyone swarms the trucks when its time to board the trucks because it sucks to be stuck in the back row sandwiched by other people. Yes the vantage point is better but the rush for seats and the poorer quality guides/tracker was very apparently especially coming from a private game reserve.
