Japanese Castle - Takatori
Takatori castle ruins, has the prestigious title of one of three highest mountain castles in Japan. The original castle was built in 1332 by Ochi Kunizumi and underwent several rebuilds and owners including Honda Tarozaemon from 1584 - 1640, before finally resting with the Uemura clan until the meiji restoration when the castle was finally pulled down. The grounds of the castle are enormous, including 27 yagura and seven wells, I only managed to see two of these. While none of the original buildings remain, a considerable amount of stonework does. Jcastles site has further information about the castle and a link to Nara Sangyo University that have developed a graphical reconstruction of the castle.

Lunch in Yakitaka Hakata
Hello, this is Jerry. I visited a new high-end izakaya style restaurant in a new hotel in Hakata. It was Yakitaka on the 2th floor in The Blossom Premier Hakata. The hotel is located right across Canal City and led to Hakata Station.
As a matter of fact, there has been another Yakitaka in Tenjin. So Yakitaka in Hakata is the second one. The basic concepts for the two Yakitakas (as far as I’ve experienced) are ‘high-end’ and ‘open’. Screening the menu, all the dishes with their names gave me an impression that every single one is targeted to get customers to feel that they’ve eaten something not just scrumptious but also exceptional. According to the manager, his team made a huge effort to make a perfect menu to have customers experience local culinary arts with the most locally grown ingredients. A customer comes to Yakitaka and the person can enjoy almost all the representative local dishes of not just Fukuoka but also Kyushu in Yakitaka. For example, horse meat sashimi, which is a traditionally popular dish in Kumamoto Prefecture, can be served in Yakitaka (an extreme case).
Moreover, the restaurant is structured with the open kitchen in the middle and counter seats surrounding it. The kitchen is open, and the customer can watch the whole process of the dishes being cooked. Even the water tank keeping seafood ingredients is located quite visibly on the side and all the customers in can see what the seafood ingredients look like. Openness is not just about the physical structure of the restaurant. All the staff from the manager to chefs welcome customers’ questions. If you ask a chef in Yakitaka about A, he will give you a long answer of A, B, C and D(but not TMI(too much information).
I tried a lunch set in Yakitaka. It was composed of 9 kinds of side dishes, a bowl of rice and miso soup. First, every single side dish had its own characters and at the same time made a harmonious composition to make me feel I had a fabulous lunch ever! Without doubt (I like giving questions whatsoever), I asked the chef serving me what kind of dishes they were on a big square plate. He introduced me all the names of the 9 side dishes and where they are popular locally in Kyushu. Even the amount of each one felt perfect. After finishing the last scoop of rice and the piece of the side dishes, I felt I had eaten enough not full. And the dessert I enjoyed, gelato with strawberries, was sweet enough and fresh enough (I heard that the lunch I ate is quite popular among female customers from both Japan and foreign countries).
The last thing I want to mention is ‘smoking free’ of Yakitaka. Practically many izakayas allow smoking, which bothers me as a nonsmoker. But Yakitaka Hakata has its smoking room separately. So, non-smokers don’t have to feel bothered and uncomfortable with cigarette smoke and smell.
If you are looking for a good izakaya with high-end dishes and services, Yakitaka Hakata should be on top of the nominee list. I am going to bring my friends to Yakitaka definitely. Location, dishes, services, non-smoking and so on, everything is perfect for me to enjoy beer with good small dishes.

Our house in Fujisaka Heights
Here is a tour of our nice little house in Fujisaka Heights, a neighborhood in Hirakata, Japan. Hirakata is a suburb of Osaka. I apologize for the shaky-cam and the lack of sound (apparently the camera only records sound in front of it, so my narration is inaudible).
I start outside the house in our little alley. The rows of potted plants belong to our neighbors. Our house is the one with the signs for the ECC English school.
I take off my shoes before going into the house. There are slippers for people who want to wear them.
First I go into the kitchen, where my husband is making breakfast. You can see inside our tiny fridge. In Japan, people usually buy just enough food for a few days. We don't even have a pantry. Next door to the kitchen is the classroom where our landlady teaches English.
The toilet is in its own separate room. The tank is mounted in a corner and is automatically refilled by a little faucet. The toilet has all sorts of strange controls I haven't used yet. The bath part of the bathroom contains a sink, a washing machine, a tub, and a shower.
I go up one staircase to a small room in which our landlady's friend teaches math. I go downstairs and climb a longer staircase that leads to our three rooms. First is the bedroom, with two cots pushed together and made comfortable with sleeping pads and blankets. (Mattress beds are uncommon in Japan.) We each use only one blanket as a cover.
The next room is the work room, where we have our computers set up. It also houses Horton's clothes, our luggage, and my cello.
The third room is the tatami room, which the landlady and her family used as a living room when they lived here. The floors are covered in tatami mats (which are the standard by which the Japanese measure the size of a room). We hang our laundry on the porch to dry. You can see how close together the houses are!
We love it here :)
