KUTANI CHOEMON was founded in 1879 in Ishikawa, Japan. We have been making tableware and tea ceremony utensils for over 130 years in an integrated system of production from raw material to finished products. Although we are small on a business scale, every piece of work is carefully handmade and hand-painted by experienced craftsmen. Our products feature rich blue and white colors and traditional Kutani color glazes.
In 2010, a new Kutani pottery JAIME HAYON x KUTANI CHOEMON produced by MARUWAKA-YA was released in collaboration with the Spanish designer Jaime Hayón.

My Adventures in Japan, May, 2014 : In a Gold-Leaf (Kinpaku) Factory, Kanazawa
Kanazawa gold leaf is made of alloys consisting of pure gold, and a very little amount of silver and copper. The gold leaf is pounded evenly to a thickness of 0.0001 mm. Even though gold leaf is so thin that we can see through it, the brightness of the gold is not lost. The brightness and expandability of gold leaf depends on the quality of hakuuchi-gami, which is the Japanese craft paper placed between gold leaves when they are pounded. Kanazawa gold leaf has been used in various places for its beautiful sparkle; Kinkakuji Temple, Nikko Toshogu, lacquerwares, Buddhist altars, textiles, and Kutani ceramics. More than 98% of Japanese gold leaf, and 100% of Japanese silver leaf and Western leaf is produced in Kanazawa. The city produces 99 percent of the nation's gold leaf and all of its silver and brass leaf as well as uwazumi, which is a bit thicker than metal leaf.
