The river Saane (French: La Sarine) meanders in mostly narrow and deeply eroded gorges down the valley between the two reservoirs of Lake of Gruyère and Lac de Schiffenen in the Western Swiss canton of Fribourg. The Saane rises up the valley at the Sanetschhorn (2,924 m above sea level) and runs through the villages of Gstaad (1,050 m above sea level) in the Bernese Saanenland and Château-d'Oex (958 m above sea level) in the Vaud Pays-d'Enhaut before it arrives on Fribourg territory in La Gruyère. After flowing through the two reservoirs, the river finally joins the Aar west of Bern (540 m above sea level).
Southwest of the cantonal capital of Fribourg (629 m above sea level) lies Hauterive Abbey (French: Abbaye de Hauterive) at the bank of the Saane. It is a Cistercian abbey and also includes an abbey church in the typical style of Cistercian architecture: the «Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption».

The Abbaye de Hauterive (abbey of Hauterive or Altenryf) is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1137. It was once a stopover place along the pilgrims' path to Santiago de Compostela and belongs to the Mehrerauer Kongregation, an international association of independent monasteries of the Order of Cistercians.
The monastery is located in the municipality of Hauterive in the canton of Fribourg. It lies at an altitude of 579 m above sea level and is surrounded by the Sarine (Saane). Here, the river has burrowed deep into the molasse layers and is lined with steep slopes with sandstone rocks, which are up to 100 m high. The monastery also comprises an abbey church in the typical style of Cistercian architecture called «Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption».
Autigny (684 m above sea level) is a village and a municipality in the District de la Sarine (Sarine District) in the canton of Fribourg. The village used to be called Ottenach. Autigny lies at a slope towards the south above the Glâne valley in the Fribourg Central Plateau. The highest point of the municipality is the La Fin hill (760 m above sea level). In the north, the municipal area extends up to Lentigny.
The village comprises the hamlets of Le Moulin (634 m above sea level) at the Glâne river, La Crétause (673 m above sea level) and Le Saugy (720 m above sea level) north of the La Fin plateau as well as several solitary farms. Among the neighboring municipalities of Autigny are Cottens, Farvagny, Le Glèbe, Villorsonnens, Chénens and La Brillaz.
The village was first mentioned in a document as Altignei in 1068 -- derived from the Gallo-Roman name Altinius. Well worth a visit is the parish church Saint-Maurice, which dates back to the 13th century and was rebuilt from 1830 to 1831.

The Lac de Schiffenen (German: Schiffenensee) is a reservoir in the Western Swiss canton of Fribourg. The arch dam in the north of Schiffenen (555 m above sea level) retains the river Saane (French: La Sarine), coming from the south below Fribourg (629 m above sea level). This river rises in the southernmost section of the canton of Bern at the Sanetschhorn (2,924 m above sea level); it flows through the Bernese Saanenland and the Vaud Pays d'Enhaut, and then also traverses the Gruyère valley section in the canton of Fribourg before it runs into the two reservoirs of Lake of Gruyère and Lac de Schiffenen.
The Château de Barberêche is situated on the left shore of the Lac de Schiffenen below the valley of Barberêche (German: Bärfischen, 569 m above sea level). The 16th-century palace is today, following extensive renovations, characterized by the neo-Gothic and neo-Classicism styles.
