La Cabaña, Havana, Cuba, 2014
The Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña was constructed after the capture in 1762 through British Troops by King Carlos III from 1763 to 1774.
La Cabana, Havana, Cuba.
Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña was much more than just a wall- it was a key piece to Havana’s complex fortification system, guarding the narrow entrance to the Bay of Havana.
Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña, or simply La Cabaña, sprawls for over 700 metres along the canal leading into the Bay of Havana. Built in the shape of a crown, this fortress covers 10 hectares and is reinforced by a deep dry moat on the east, and high wall panels facing the channel.
La Cabaña was so imposing and impenetrable, that no invader ever attacked it. The fortress may not have seen any battles, but it was used as a military prison by dictators Batista and Machado. Soon after the revolution, Che Guevara set up his headquarters here.
La Cabaña is included in the system of fortresses that, along with Old Havana, were declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña in Havana is a large eighteenth century fortress
Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña in Havana is one of the largest and best preserved fortresses of Latin America. The Fort known as La Cabaña is an eighteenth century fort complex, located on the eastern side of the harbor entrance in Havana.

A lesser known Havana attraction is the CANNON CEREMONY held each night at the La Cabaña fortress. In 1959 Che Guevara took possession of the fortress on his triumphant conquer of Havana during the fall of the dictator Batista.

This ceremony is worth a visit. One warning : be on time (+/- 8 p.m.), since good places with an excellent view are limited. The venue can only be reached by car or taxi. Leave Old Havana through the tunnel at the end of the Paseo del Prado, heading for Havana del Este.
Enjoy your stay!

I see him as a symbol, and in my case, because of our closeness, it is easier for me not to see him as a mythical figure. But what´s more important is that it (this exhibition) reflects the vision of a contemporary man who tries to change the world. And there it is. It has to be seen. I think it´s very interesting.

STORYLINE:
Ernesto Che Guevara´s own photographs are currently being exhibited for the first time ever in Cuba, in Havana´s 16th century fortress overlooking the mouth of the harbour.
The exhibition is an opportunity to see a different side of the mythical revolutionary leader, and give an insight into his personal life and the things that moved him.
A selection of 201 photos taken by Guevara between 1954 and 1965 can be seen at the Havana fortress of San Carlos de la Cabaña, where the Argentinian guerrilla set up his headquarters in the wake of the Cuban revolution in 1959.
The exhibition, which opened its doors on 28 July, was the initiative of a delegation from the regional government of Valencia, Spain, where some of Che's photographs were first put on show in the early 90s.
Now, after a year of painstaking restoration work, a much larger selection of Che's photographs are on display in the country he held so dear.
For Camilo Guevara March, Che's third son from his second marriage, to Aleida March, the exhibition shows the private man he knew personally.
Photographs of Che during his campaigns show how he was rarely without a camera, and his photographs are a fascinating record of those times.
But his interest in photography goes back further.
Before he joined Fidel Castro´s revolutionary movement, Che covered the 1955 Pan American games for a Mexican news agency.
He also worked as a street photographer while in Mexico, and many of his photographs taken during this time can be seen here.
The pictures also record his travels to Africa and Asia, in the early sixties, as a member of the Cuban government.
