Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra Australia | 30 minutes | 6+km / 4 miles | POV Virtual Run/cycle
#TreadmillPack, #TreadmillPackRun, #TreadmillRunAustralia, #TreadmillRunCanberra
Welcome! Join the pack on a stunning Canberra morning for a 31 minute run around Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The seat of Federal Parliament of Australia.
Let’s commence in Kings Park near the National Carillon and complete a 6.5 kilometre / 4 mile anticlockwise lap of the ‘central basin’ of this man made lake. We will run the 2 kilometre section of R G Menzies Walk (the Prime Minister between 1949-1966), cross the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge, follow the southern shore line which includes Commonwealth Place, cross the Kings Avenue Bridge and complete a lap of Aspen Island at our start / finish point. Along the way I’ll occasionally highlight some facts and monuments of this purpose build city designed by US architect Sir Walter Burley Griffin.
Wherever you are in the world, the clear smooth lake waters, open parklands, wide paths and bright blue sky with only wisps of clouds in the distance is sure to make you feel warm again!
I recently spent three days in Canberra clocking up close to 25 kilometres of running. I’ll be presenting two further runs in the coming months including a Parkrun and a tourist run through the “Parliamentary Triangle” precinct.

I run to these videos on my treadmill in my garage, that is why I make them. I’m carrying a few injuries but I’m still going! I’ve been a runner for over forty years. If I don’t like the quality or I can’t run to the video I don’t post it!
Other Treadmill Pack virtual runs.
Join us on your treadmill, stationary bicycle, stair climber, elliptical rider or even your home fitness circuit.
Regular viewers should notice an improvement in sound quality with the addition of a shotgun microphone. I’ve also experimented with seperate ‘timers’ during the into and run. Let me know what you think.
Don’t run alone. Run ‘as one’ with the pack; Treadmill Pack!
Until next time.
Mick

Rotary Rides Canberra 2012
The Canberra Rotary Rides on Sunday 1 April was a great success. 300 people participated in the rides. Local and visiting riders enjoyed perfect Canberra autumn weather.
Nearly 200 riders took on the Five Peaks Challenge covering up to 100 km and picking their choice of local peaks to climb. Most made it to the first peak, Mt. Pleasant very easily. Mt. Ainslie, a long steady climb with a steeper pinch at the top caused a bit of panting. Those who made the stiff climb up Black Mountain thought it worth it for the exhilarating ride back down to the morning tea stop by the lake. Almost all took the steady gradient of Mt. Stromlo in their stride. Some of the riders who set a more leisurely pace were cooled by a passing shower atop Red Hill.
Family Fun riders enjoyed their circuit of Lake Burley Griffin as well.
Everyone enjoyed Rotary's two morning tea stops. Absolutely scrumptious homemade cakes and slices, said Gaik Khong. Great ride, great organisation, great weather, summed up rider Margaret Hodgson.
Event coordinator Jeff Ibbotson from the Rotary Club of Woden was delighted with the turn out. I think that Technical Aid for the Disabled ACT (TADACT) and Fred Hollows Foundation will be pretty pleased with the funds raised for them he said. One rider enjoyed the ride and was impressed by TADACT's display. He sent in a very generous donation cheque after he finished. Now we have to start planning next year's rides.
The event just would not have been possible without the help of our volunteers and sponsors, Jeff said. The publicity through Canberra Times and Canberra Weekly was great, not only to attract riders, but also to show care and support for charities' community work. Cycle City checked bikes before the start. Rotary and Pedal Power volunteers acted as ride marshals around the routes. The Rotary Club of Weston Creek's BBQ, Black Magic Coffee and Chameleon Ice Creamery fed returning riders.

This is the route we took round... yawn... Canberra on our bikes. It's amazing we didn't fall asleep.

ACT bike lane rule
My purpose here is to educate people about the bike lane rule in the ACT. I think many people on ACT roads are confused about it, and that makes them believe they have right of way when they do not -- the result of which either leads to aggression or can just be plain dangerous, or both, as in this case.
I apologise for the swearing, but it comes about because many of these situations scare the living daylights out of me (I almost got side-swiped by the blue Mitsubishi on my right, in this instance); or else I just get frustrated because the same thing seems to happen over and over again ... often in the same places. I apologise for the 'f***ing a******s' comment at the end -- it was said in frustration and did not mean to imply that all people in all cars are f***ing a******s.
Something else to watch out for on Canberra's bike paths...
I noticed movement across the path as I approach the crest of the hill...it was a roo crossing to the right...it then crossed back again to the left so I was wary of it...you can get a feel for its speed as it bounds along next to the path and then crosses back again...I was doing about 35kph (I normally go faster but was ready to stop)...
Civic Cycle Loop
Did you know that the Civic Cycle Loop is a 3.2 kilometre cycle path that creates a loop around the CBD in Canberra? It connects cycle paths and provides cyclists with improved access to and around the City. The loop provides a safe riding environment without the need for cyclists to ride on the road or congested footpaths and helps to create a healthy and active community.

Lake Burley Griffin - Parliament House Yella - January 2017
My first stay in Canberra meant I just had to get on the water. I was fortunate to get a nice morning for it. The carp were rolling on the surface early but I could not tempt any. I explored the lake by trolling and managed to find a nice Golden Perch, my first, right in front of Parliament House.
A cheeky little fox came to say hello, as well.
I look forward to my next trip on the water in our nation's capital, whenever that may be!
