The Beaten Path Trail -- Trip Planning & What We Learned
If you are considering a trip on The Beaten Path you may find this video helpful.
During the planning phase of this trip we discovered that certain questions had answers that were difficult to find or the answers just were not available.
Immediately after finishing our hike, Dane and I sat down for an impromptu Question & Answer session . In this video we discuss:
- Logistics of using a hammock
- Terrain & trail difficulty
- Signage & trail markings
- Suggested trail map
- Using alcohol stoves
- Rain gear
- Footwear
- Bugs & bug repellent
- Itinerary & daily mileage
- Bear safety
- Cell phone coverage
We used a National Geographic map for this hike. More specifically, it was #722 Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness East (Cooke City, Red Lodge). This map is readily available from the National Geographic website, REI stores, Amazon and various other retailers.

Red River Camping Trip Hike to Middle Fork Lake 6 11 2019
The hike to Middle Fork Lake via Middle Fork Trail 91 is a moderate level hike under good conditions but add to that an out-of-control stream and an upper snow-packed trail and suddenly the level becomes strenuous. That said, the visit to the alpine lake is definitely worth the effort, wet boots and all. The trail ascends 1200 feet to an elevation of 10,880 ft. over a 2 1/2-mile stretch on an old logging road with numerous switchbacks. The road climbs at an 8% grade so you'll need to stop and take many breaks during the ascent. In summary, it's a hike worth doing and repeating.
