Urmia Lake, located in North-West of Iran is the second saline lake of the world with 200 gram salt per liter in origin volume and 500 gr/lit at present while lost almost 90% of water volume and area. It has been drying for last two decades because of improper water consumption by Agriculture sector, dam construction and Climate Change resulting almost 20% reduction of annual precipitation. Because of dryness, the flamingos can not come again to the lake during winter season. In the mountains of northwest Iran, Lake Urmia is an important source of food and water. Overcrowding, pollution and drought have left areas which were once underwater, barren and scorched. Now, people are working to try and reverse that. Yusuf Erim reports.

دریاچه اُرومیه نام دریاچه‌ای در شمال غربی کشور ایران است که طبق تقسیمات کشوری ایران، این دریاچه میان دو استان آذربایجان غربی و استان آذربایجان شرقی قرار گرفته‌است. بررسی نوسانات سطح آب دریاچه‌ها به لحاظ اهمیت، ماهیت و موقعیت این مجموعه‌های آبی در سال‌های اخیر اهمیت ویژه ای پیدا کرده‌است. دریاچه ارومیه بزرگترین دریاچه داخلی ایران می‌باشد .
بر اساس لیست تنوع زیستی پارک ملی دریاچه ارومیه که در سال ۲۰۱۴ و ۲۰۱۶ ارائه شده‌است پارک ملی دریاچه ارومیه مسکن ۶۲ گونه باکتری و آرکئوباکتر، ۴۲ گونه قارچ‌های میکروسکوپی، ۲۰ گونه جلبک، ۳۱۱ گونه گیاه، ۵ گونه نرم‌تنان دو کفه‌ای (رودخانه‌های جزایر)، ۲۲۶ گونه از پرندگان، ۲۷ گونه خزنده و دوزیست و ۲۴ گونه از پستانداران می‌باشد. همچنین دست کم فسیل ۴۷ گونه یافته شده‌است. این زیست‌بوم به صورت بین‌المللی توسط یونسکو به عنوان منطقه تحت حفاظت به ثبت رسیده‌است. سازمان محیط زیست ایران اکثر نقاط این دریاچه را به عنوان پارک ملی شناسایی نموده‌است.
این دریاچه با داشتن بیش از یک‌صد جزیره کوچک سخره‌ای محل توقف پرندگان مهاجر از جمله فلامینگو، پلیکان، کفچه‌نوک، اکراس، لک‌لک، اردک پیسه، نوک‌خنجری٬ چوب‌پا، و مرغ نوروزی می‌باشد.
به خاطر شوری بیش از حد دریاچه هیچ نوع ماهی در این دریاچه زندگی نمی‌کند. با این‌حال دریاچه ارومیه یکی از زیست‌گاه‌های مهم سخت‌پوست آرتمیا شناخته‌می‌شود. این سخت پوست یکی از منابع اصلی تغذیه پرندگان مهاجر از جمله فلامینگو به‌شمار می‌آید. در اوایل سال ۲۰۱۳ از رئیس وقت مرکز مطالعات آرتمیای ارومیه نقل شد که آرتمیا در این دریاچه منقرض شده‌است. این نظر توسط برخی کارشناسان دیگر رد شده‌است.

Iran scrambles to save Lake Orumiyeh
An environmental disaster is unfolding in northwest Iran.
Lake Orumiyeh, which was once the largest lake in the Middle East, is rapidly drying up.
Water mismanagement, a lack of rain and the building of a nearby dam are some of the causes.
The Government has developed 19 solutions to try to save Orumiyeh.
Al Jazeera's Soraya Lennie reports from Orumiyeh.

Urmia (Turkish language: Urmu, Urmiyə, اورمیه; farsi: ارومیه) variously translitterated as Oroumiyeh, Orūmīyeh and Urūmiyeh, is a city in and the capital of West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 577,307, with 153,570 households.
The city lies at an altitude of 1,330 m above sea level on the Shahar Chay river (City River). Urmia is the 10th most populated city in Iran. The population is mainly mainly Azerbaijanian Turkish(85-90%), with Kurdish, Assyrian Christian, and Armenian minorities.
Urmia is situated on a fertile plain called Urmia Plain, on western side of Lake Urmia; and eastern side of Turkish border and marginal range of mountains.
Urmia is the trade center for a fertile agricultural region where fruit (especially Apple and Grape) and Tobacco are grown. An important town by the 9th cent., Urmia was seized by the Seljuk Turks (1184), and later occupied a number of times by the Ottoman Turks.
Urmiye (Türkçesi:اورمو, Urmu, اورمیه, Urumiyə;Farsça: ارومیه, Orumieh), İran'ın Batı Azerbaycan Eyaleti'nin yönetim merkezi olan şehir. Şehir, bağlı olduğu eyaletin orta kısmında, Urmiye Gölü ile Türkiye sınırı arasında, kendi adıyla anılan ovada kuruludur. Nüfusu 2006 yılı verileriyle 577,307 kişidir ki Urmiye ülkenin en büyük 10. şehridir.
Urmiye şehrinde nüfusun çoğunluğunu (tahmini 90%) Türklerdir, azınlık kısmınıysa Kürtler, Süryaniler ve Ermeniler oluşturuyor.
