Tales Along The Old Corpse Road - Episode 1: The Lake District
*** SWITCH TO HD FOR BEST RESULTS! ***
The plot was hatched in January 2013, and first executed four months later. Fuelled by a visit to Wookey Hole in spring 2011, I decided there was nothing to stop me travelling to the far-flung corners of the country with my trusty video camera, to visit the sites and see the sights that have featured in Old Corpse Road's repertoire to the present day.
The visits will be grouped by location, so this first episode focuses on the Lake District, where the band found the original inspiration for their lyrical matter - the old myths, legends and folklore that the Tin Islands have been so rich in for centuries.
0:00 - The Old Corpse Road: I visit the path that once led from the village of Mardale, now sunk under the Haweswater, to Shap Abbey - and find out how much of a hard slog it was to haul the dead over a mountain.
17:55 - The Oakmen Of Naddle Forest: despite some confusion as to where Naddle Forest really is (and what the trees are), I search for the bluebells that are tied into the legend, and incur the wrath of the Oakmen...
31:19 - The Crier Of Claiffe: the ferry across Lake Windermere still runs to this day in the same place, so take the trip across, looking for where the Crier stood on Claiffe Heights, and chase him to his original base.
44:38 - The Oakmen Of Naddle Forest (revisited): not one to be defeated easily, I return three weeks later on a bluebell hunt... with reinforcements! Four members of the band are here to point out where their early photoshoots and demo covers came from - it's a guided tour of the forest!
Three legends down, ten to go; future episodes will cover the area immediately around Darlington, the West Country, and three (or four?) of the Celtic Nations. Watch this space!

Running the Trails of the Lake District
Every month I visit the Lake District to spend a day running in the hills. It's good for the body, good for the head, good for the soul. I film the run and chat to myself about whatever feels important that day. Then I edit it when I find the time (only allowing myself a day to do the edit) and chuck it out into the world.
If you are inclined to make a donation to an environmental charity that would be great. Pick whatever you like, but here are a few that I like:

The clever app shown in the film is Viewranger. It's great. (They do now sponsor me, but I made this film before that happened!)

Breasthigh Road May 2015 - Lake District, Cumbria, UK Green laning Land Rover Defender TD5
May 31st 2015 Land Rover Defender TD5 takes on this great green lane at Breasthigh Road, Cumbria, UK in the Lake District. It includes the Borrow Beck ford at the west end. Handy as it washes the mud off!
This green lane is known as U3278 - Breasthigh and is only about ten minutes from Junction 38 on the M6 motorway.
Quite a steep incline with large loose rocks in places leads to a great view at the summit. A few tricky corners during the descent make this a great lane.
Good ground clearance is needed in some places, most 4x4s should be fine though.

Stone circles that are more beautiful than Stonehenge 2016 HD
Stonehenge in the west of England is undoubtedly the king of stone circles - stone monuments originally set out in a way to form a circle or ellipse.
However, it's easy to overlook the dozens of other stone circles which can be found across the British Isles and even as far afield as Israel. We gathered some other stone circles - one of which is underwater - that demonstrate the diversity of neolithic monuments.

THE ENGLISH LAKES: A History
THE ENGLISH LAKES: A History
IAN THOMPSON Book Number: 73824 Product format: Hardback
The Lake District is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and certainly the most dramatic parts of England, but it was not always thus. In 1722 Daniel Defoe remarked on the inhospitable terror of the high and formidable peaks and was of the opinion that upon reaching the unpassable hills of Westmorland all the pleasant part of England was at an end. There were many other travel writers of the period who held a similar opinion, but a strange combination of events saw the Lake District's popular image transformed in the space of 50 years. The Georgians had developed a fascination with the Alps, but the outbreak of the Napoleonic Wars made travel there impossible. So, our budding mountaineers turned their attentions closer to home, providing the spark for a national and international love affair with the Lakes. Add to this the arrival of the likes of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Southey and De Quincey and their transformation from a region of horrid mountains to one of vales of peace was complete. Over 20 million people a year visit the Lake District, and one of the questions Ian Thompson tackles here is how, given this pressure, has it managed to retain its natural beauty and tranquillity? What is the source of its magnetic attraction and how did it come to exert its spell? As well as the poets, artists, climbers, conservationists and storytellers like Turner, Ruskin, Beatrix Potter and Arthur Ransome have added to our perception of this magical place, and how could we not mention the legend that is Alfred Wainwright, who did more than anybody to get over to people how special a place it is. Crammed with fascinating details and a lifetime's observations and superb colour photos from the author, plus paintings, etchings and archive photography. 343pp, US edition.

Bibliophile price: £8.50

This self-shot documentary follows Ed's journey to see if he can rekindle his love of the fells by talking to friends and fellow competitors about how they make it work.
