Lamanai Maya Ruins and New River Boat Ride
Lamanai is one of many Maya ruins that can be found in Belize. It's very hard to reach on land, and therefore taking a boat ride down New River is the best option for getting there. Some of the temples in Lamanai include the Mask Temple, the Jaguar Temple, and the High Temple

Lamanai Mayan Ruins & Boat Ride on the New River in Belize
We booked a tour with Elio Avila of Lamanai Belize Tours to go check out the Lamanai Mayan Ruins which is located in the jungle near Orange Walk. Our guide Julian picked us up from our hotel and drove us to Orange Walk where we then took an hour long boat ride down the New River to the Lamania Mayan Ruins to which we were allowed to explore the impressive Mayan monuments and even climbed the High Temple for spectacular views! If you ever get to Belize City, this is definitely a must do tour, so worth the one hour drive and the one hour boat trip to get there. Getting there is half of the adventure!

Lamanai (from Lama'anayin, submerged crocodile in Yucatec Maya) is a Mesoamerican archaeological site, and was once a major city of the Maya civilization, located in the north of Belize, in Orange Walk District. The site's name is pre-Columbian, recorded by early Spanish missionaries, and documented over a millennium earlier in Maya inscriptions as Lam'an'ain. Lamanai is renown for its exceptionally long occupation spanning three millennia, beginning in the Early Preclassic Maya period and continuing through the Spanish and British Colonial periods, into the 20th century. Unlike most Classic-period sites in the southern Maya lowlands, Lamanai was not abandoned at the end of the 10th century AD.

Lamanai Mayan Ruins & River Tour, Belize ~ Carnival Breeze
We wanted to visit some Mayan Ruins while in Belize and chose to book the Lamanai Mayan Ruins & River Boat Safari through Carnival. The tour was great and I highly recommend this excursion but the phrasing used in the description was a bit misleading.
Here is Carnival's description of this excursion on their web site:
Your adventure will begin when you hop aboard a comfortable air-conditioned bus for a one hour drive through the scenic Belize River Valley. You will pass through the historic villages, which were the original settlements of the colony of British Honduras; all of which form the Belize River Valley, on the way to Ayinha Eco Park. You will then board a riverboat for a 30 minute cruise of the New River Lagoon, with its spectacular rainforest teeming with exotic birds, deer and iguanas, mangroves and orchids. Experience the thrill of gliding along the sparkling New River Lagoon, while viewing the spectacular rain forest. This includes exotic animals and birds en route to Lamanai (from Lama’anayin, “submerged crocodile” in Yucatec Maya), once the largest Mayan ceremonial site in Meso-America and occupied as early as 1500 B.C.
We had an amazing time and I recommend seeing any of the Mayan Ruins if you are heading to Belize. Ayinha Eco Park is beautiful and they have taken great care with their landscaping but this is an all day excursion so we didn't spend much time there.
If you would like to read what is stated on the excursion web site and the reality of the trip, check out my post about our adventure here:

Carnival Magic Cruise Vlog Day 5: Belize - Mayan Ruins Lamanai
This is our adventure at the Lamanai ruins in Belize! There was an hour and 15 minute bus ride to the restaurant where the speedboat was docked. During the bus ride, the tour guides did a presentation of various aspects of Belize. Upon arrival at the restaurant, it took about 10 minutes to get everyone loaded into the boat. The first part of the boat ride is slow and goes down a man-made channel. During that portion, Roy (one of the tour guides) told us more about Belize. Once the speedboat was out of the slow area, we sped up to full speed. There wasn't much in the way of scenery, it was basically a jungle shore and the river was very wide, really more like a lake. The high speed portion of the boat ride took about 20 minutes. The tour of the Lamanai Archaeological site took about an hour and 15 minutes. That was followed by another 25 minute speedboat ride back to the restaurant where we had lunch, and then another hour and 15 minute ride back to the the port in Belize city. It was a very strenuous tour, but well worth it, so be ready for that!
