Pucón - San Martin de los Andes by Hua Hum ferrry on Lago Pirihueico
#Pucón – San Martin de los Andes by Hua Hum Ferry on Lago Pirihueico
12 October 2017
After 3 days in Pucón the #Patogonia #Trip really started. This first stage was heading from Pucón in #Chile to San Martin de los Andes in #Argentina. The plan was to drive the 4x4 road over the Paso Chinay in the #Villaricca National Park. Unfortunately there was still too much snow to take the Paso Chinay. The #tourist info in Pucón advised us to take the Hua Hum Ferry from Puerto Fuy to Hua Hum over the Lago Pirihueico.
And indeed, it was a very nice road to Puerto Fuy, partly paved and partly unpaved. We were in time for the Hua Hum Ferry. It is important because the Hua Hum Ferry sails only once a day in these times. It was a very nice and relaxing sailing of 1,5 hour on the Lago Pirihueico. The weather was fine as well.
From Hua Hum it was only a few minutes to the Chilean-Argentinian border. It was quite at the border. Despite of all the warnings were we in half an hour through both the #Chilean and the #Argentinian borders. On this side of the Lago Pirihueico we only drove on dirt roads. Driving was fun, the flat tire was less #fun…

Climbing Volcán Lanín in Patagonia, Argentina, near San Martin de los Andes
Climbing Lanín Volcano (Volcán Lanín) in San Martin de los Andes, Argentina, was an epic 30th birthday gift for Alex!
In addition to the climb, I wanted to cover the legendary driving route, Road of the Seven Lakes (Ruta de los Siete Lagos). Beginning in Bariloche, we drove through Villa La Angostura to San Martin de los Andes.
From San Martin de los Andes, we linked up with our tour operator, Andestrack. We headed to the Lanín National Park (Parque Nacional Lanín) in Argentina for the two days, one night trek. Yes, in the middle of winter in July.
Getting There:
We grabbed a rental car (book in advance) in Bariloche and drove along Ruta 234 through Neuquén Province. The drive was incredibly beautiful. There are many lookout points along the journey with gorgeous vistas.
After arriving in Villa La Angostura, we did a 30-minute round-trip hike to a lookout point in Los Arrayanes National Park. From there, we could see the infamous Inalco House. This house is the alleged home of Hitler after WWII, according to conspiracy theories. We had a quick bite in the Café Antibes before driving on to San Martin de los Andes, our home base for hiking Lanín Volcano.
San Martin de los Andes:
It's a charming ski town near the base of Cerro Chapelco. We booked a quaint little Casita Del Lago from Airbnb, hosted by the sweet and English-speaking Maria. We stopped into Andestrack where the owner, Julian (also, English-speaking), helped gear us up for our expedition to Lanín Volcano.
Andestrack provided the crampons, avalanche gear, ice axe, helmets, headlamps, as well as all food. They helped us find winter boot rentals. All we brought were our 50 and 65-liter backpacks full of clothes, our sleeping bags, sleeping mats, and water. Typically, winter treks are not allowed, but it had been unseasonably warm and they made sure we were very fit. Our guide, Ricardo, gave us the green light.
Day 1:
We met Ricardo at 7:30 AM for the one hour drive to the ranger station at the base of Lanín National Park. After signing in and distributing the food and gear amongst our three packs, we hit the trails. We weaved along snowshoe trails in the forest until arriving at the base. It was cloudy so we couldn't see the summit. We then continued to trek upwards, avoiding fresh avalanche routes and switchbacking the steep, snowy slopes.
In 5 hours, we reached the halfway point and permanent refugio, our home for the night. The refugio is above the clouds and gave us stellar views of the surrounding mountains and volcanoes in both Chile and Argentina. Here, I surprised Alex with a big slice of birthday cake!
Day 2:
Ricardo, our guide, woke us up at 4:45 AM to have a small breakfast. We packed our backpacks, leaving most of our clothes in the refugio to retrieve later. We set out in the dark, led by our headlamps, and headed straight up.
Around 8:30 AM, the sun started peeking out for the most spectacular sunrise we had ever seen. The trail was steep and windy. It was hard work and cold. After a rough 7 hours of hiking, including stops to eat at Refugio Caja and breaks to catch our breath, we summited. The last two hours to the top were painfully challenging.
Our ascent up Lanín Volcano was steep, and the snow was unforgiving. We had our crampons on all day already, but now we tethered ourselves together with rope and harnesses. We saw winds of up to 80 km/hour and were getting tossed from side to side.
We reached the summit of Lanín Volcano around 2:00 PM. After a few photos on the very windy top, we began our descent down. After collecting our items at the refugio at the halfway point, we continued to the base. Ricardo made it fun by giving us some fabric to make a sled with! We slid down a large portion of the mountain on our butts. That was a fun surprise.
By the time we got to the car, the sun had set, and it had taken us nearly 13 hours. We were sore but happy and accomplished. It was a fantastic way to spend Alex's birthday!
To get the most out of this adventure, get your butt in shape. It will be much more fun. Use our free program, specifically for this climb:
Two more favorite adventures of ours in Bariloche were hiking from Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi to Refugio Frey (2-4 hours depending on conditions). And, backcountry skiing at Mallín Alto:

San Martin de los Andes – Bariloche
13 October 2017
It was really a nice and relaxing tour from San Martin de los Andes to Bariloche. The Ruta de los 7 lagos, or the 7 lakes tour in English, is very beautiful. We had a sunny day. The snow on the top of the mountains was a fantastic contrast with the blue sky. All the 8 lakes were beautiful. Yes, all the 8 lakes. The Ruta de los 7 lagos hits 8 lakes. I don’t know why they did not call it the Ruta de 8 lagos.
Starting at San Martin de los Andes you pass Lago Lacar, Lago Machonico, Lago Falkner, Lago Villarino, Lago Escondido, Lago Correntosa, Lago Espejo and Lago Nahuel Huapi before you reach Bariloche.
They said Bariloche is like a Swiss town. It probably is. However we did not see the beauty of the city I drove to Gutiérrez were we camped on the campsite close to the Lago Gutiérrez. The Lago Gutiërrez is not part of the Ruta de los 7 lagos. So there are only 8 lakes at the Ruta de los 7 lagos.

2015/11/03 Lanin Day 2, up to summit
Here is Part 2 of a series of video clips put together while reaching the summit and back of Lanin volcano on November 3rd, 2015.
You'll get to appreciate the beauty Lanin has to offer.
This part II consist of sharing from the early climb, even when we woke up at 1:30 a.m., and the climb didn't start until 3:00 a.m., to the summit around noon (the guide said it was 11:45 when we got to the top) to the stops and goes, the wind, the cold, the clouds, the efforts, your body aching, your muscles, your mind...
For some it may look long, boring... for others no so much.
How could I REALLY show you what you're going to see, experience, unless I show you the WHOLE thing. Not just the beauty but also the effort, the monotony, that one encounters at the time?
Enjoy!
San Martín de los Andes is a city in the province of Neuquén, Argentina. It is located in the Lácar Department in the south-west of the province, at the foot of the Andes. At the time of the founding of San Martín de los Andes the valley of Chapelco were sparsely populated by indigenous Puelches who used it as a refuge during the harsh winters of the zone. The Puelches had since colonial times engage in trade with the Huilliches on the eastern slope of the Andes through various mountain passes. Puelches raised horses on the eastern slopes of the Andes and traded them for weapons and alcoholic beverages becoming one of the main food providers of the isolated exclave of Valdivia. The Argentine and Chilean military campaigns; conquest of the Desert and the occupation of Araucanía; in the second half of the 19th century bought a definitive end to this trade. In 1898 a military expedition arrived to the zone to take a definitive control of the zone due to increasing border disputes with Chile. The Boundary treaty of 1881 between Chile and Argentina led to disputes whether the main Andean cordillera or the continental divide should serve as border in this latitude. Chilean authorities argued that since Lácar Lake drained into the Pacific the area of San Martín should belong to Chile. The Argentine government was also concerned about the zone's dependence on trade with Chile, just like in Bariloche and other parts of the southern Andes. San Martín de los Andes, modeled like a European style alpine village, was founded on 4 February 1898. Following the founding the main economic activities were wood logging and husbandry.
A major change in settlement life came when in 1937 Lanín National Park was created. This meant that wood logging was gradually reduced and numerous small settlements along the lake shore disappeared. New roads were built effectively connecting San Martín with the rest of Argentina. This led to an increased trade that almost ended local husbandry and agriculture. In the 1970s with the help of bank credits many tourism enterprises were established in San Martín making the town up to this day an important tourism center, specially during winter when the ski pistes are open. At present, either for the ski season or the summer it is a popular destination for tourism, and the seat of the administration headquarters of the Lanín National Park. Its landscape is one of the most spectacular of Patagonia. In spring and summer, it's a famous place for birdwatching, and where takes place the South American Bird Fair, main birding meeting of the continent. In the summer, adventure sports like kayaking, mountain biking, trekking, rafting, horse riding and others are popular. Golf can be played about 10 months a year on the Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II designed Chapelco Golf Club. Design and construction is starting in El Desafio Mountain Resort on a Greg Norman Signature golf course set in the mountains. The city of San Martin de los Andes offers a wide range of accommodation, with an architecture based on prevailing local materials of stone and wood. The warmth in the decorations, the attention to every detail and personalized attention. The beautiful Seven Lakes' pebbled road, takes you to Villa La Angostura, the Los Arrayanes National Park and the Nahuel Huapi lake. Chapelco is one of the most important ski centres in Argentina and South America for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding amongst others. Handcrafted artisan arts & crafts and local culinary delicacies like gourmet chocolates, pastries, organic jams and preserves. Patagonian cuisine and tea houses abound. Alpine-style hotels, lodgings and cabins available throughout. Hua-Hum international pass for travel to Panguipulli in Chile lies only 45 km (28 mi) from San Martín de los Andes. It is one of the few passes between Chile and Argentina that are open almost all year round. San Martín de los Andes has a cool ocean-influenced climate, on the boundary between Mediterranean (Köppen Csb), oceanic (Cfb) and subpolar oceanic (Cfc). Being shielded somewhat by the Andes in Chile, it is much less wet and more sunny than Chilean Patagonia, but still is very susceptible to heavy storms during the winter which tend to produce a mixture of rain and snow when they manage to retain some moisture over the Andean divide. However, when it is not raining or snowing heavily, the weather can be extremely sunny and beautiful, though the nights under these conditions are chilly and frost has occurred even during the summer. Athletic Curruhinca, an amateur soccer team, with the entire squad from San Martin de los Andes, won the title Copa Cablevision in December 15 of 2013, becoming the first amateur soccer champion in the big metropolis Buenos Aires originally coming from this city.

Patagonia Red Stag Hunt - North American Whitetail TV Show #1
Dr. Kroll has returned from Patagonia where he filmed a free-range red stag hunt for North American WHITETAIL TV. He was hosted by one of South America's best known and successful outfitters, Emilio Paris, who is well known for waterfowl, upland game bird and big game hunting at its finest. For Doc, this was a return to a place he once worked more than 35 years ago; a place about which he has many wonderful memories. Estancia Pilolil is a huge property nestled among the stepps of the Andes near the Chilean border. The property is incredibly managed as a wildlife paradise. One valley had so many stags congregating for the roar that Doc and Emilio renamed it, Stag Valley! This is a fantastic operation, first class in every way, smiles Doc, if you are lucky enough to be one of the few that hunt there, it will be a hunt of a lifetime! Doc and his cameraman, Mike Emory, took on a very long stalk; taking a world class stag with his TC Venture. Friend, John Butler of Buck Forage Products also took one of the largest stags ever for the Estancia, which should go into the record book.
