This central Ohio cottonwood tree (genus populus) is one of the largest in the Eastern US. In 2005, it totaled 528 points with a 358' circumference, 136' height, and 135' crown. The world's largest tree is a Sequoia of 1321 points. The average points of all national champion trees is between 200 and 250 points. This Eastern Cottonwood is in good health.
Video includes William Allen, famous Ohio and Texas writer, author of Starkweather and other books.
Allen's book, Walking Distance, is about Delaware County, Ohio, and the Seymour Preserve.
Also shown is the house Bill Allen added to, which is near Seymour Woods State Nature Preserve and Camp Lazarus. The house is located in the historic area first owned by Nathan Carpenter and Avery Powers of Delaware County's first families. Nathan Carpenter and Avery Powers made the first settlement in Delaware County May 1, 1801. It was on the east bank of the Olentangy River, about five miles below what became Delaware, Ohio. Carpenter built the county's first mill around 1804 and the remains of this mill still exist on Chapman Road by the Olentangy River. Allen has discovered the remains of both Carpenter's and Powers' first homes and the graveyards of these pioneer families.
The historic George W. Campbell Home, in Delaware Ohio, now the Arts Castle, is also shown.

Commerce was named the Bois d'Arc Capital of Texas” (pronounced bow-dark) by the Texas Legislature because of its location in the geographic center of the indigenous range of the bois d'arc tree. The second largest bois d'arc tree in Texas, Big Max, recognized by the National Forests Famous and Historic Trees, is located within the city limits. Held every September, the annual Bois d'Arc Bash pays homage to the native trees which played a vital part in the frontier days, providing foundations, fences and weapons of the Native Americans. The Bash celebrates with arts & crafts vendors, food, parade, kids' game area, pageant, wine, musical entertainment, 5K run, and car & truck show.

Gunman's McDonald's rampage caught on camera
Security footage released by police in Texas shows the moment a gunman enters a McDonald's and tries to fire but his weapon jams.
Police in Texas said on Friday that a gunman's jammed pistol prevented him from carrying out a deadly rampage in a suburban McDonald's restaurant.
Security footage released by police shows Jestin Anthony Joseph, 24, entering a McDonald's restaurant in Fort Worth, Texas on Tuesday night.
He allegedly asked for a cup before drawing a gun and pointing it at diners, demanding their keys.
Davage Armstrong was among those inside the restaurant when the incident occurred and quickly took cover.
I pulled myself inside of the McDonald's office, he said.
I was waiting for bullets to come through the door, he added.
Joseph is seen later in the footage approaching a father and son at the counter and pulling the trigger - but the gun doesn't fire.
He briefly scuffles with the man, who runs off, before walking around to the kitchen and pointing the gun at another patron.
Sergeant Joe Loughman, of the Fort Worth Police Department, said Joseph pulled the trigger at least five times in total, and eventually fired a stray bullet in the car park before police arrived and arrested him.
He appeared to be intent to kill somebody, just lucky that it didn't happen, he said.
Joseph has been charged with five counts of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and is being held on $500,000 bond.

The Most Amazing American Archaeological Finds
From a viking coin viking coin, to the pedro mummy, here are The Most Amazing Archaeological Finds in The Americas.
#10. Jamestown and the original James Fort
James Fort certainly doesn’t date back as far as others on our list but it does play a huge role in discovering more about the first settlers in America. Excavations of the 1608 fort began in 1994. Currently, approximately 80% of the site has been excavated and around 2 million objects have been found.
These artifacts have shed new light on the relationship between the original settlers and the native Americans.
#9. Dighton Rock
In 1960, a young Harvard graduate came across a large rock protruding out of the Taunton River. He began to sketch the markings on the rock but could only draw the upper half because of the water.
John Danforth was the first of many to put forward a theory to explain the bizarre images. Considering the petroglyphs were directed at those who arrived by water, Danforth believed the images were a reencounter of a battle with visitors who may have arrived by ship.
#8. The Davenport Stele
The above image is one of the two slate tablets that we found in mounds near Davenport, in Iowa. In January 1877 the access rights at Cook’s Farm were about to be transferred, which caused an emergency evacuation. Reverend Jacob Gass discovered two large tablets.
As they were found alongside many ancient Native American artifacts, their origin was strongly believed to have been the same. The authenticity was even supported by the Smithsonian Institution. It wasn’t long though before people started to question the findings. Once again the conspiracy theorists jumped on board.
#7. America’ Stonehenge
America’s Stonehenge is different to the original but it does have some similarities. Both were built by ancient people who were highly knowledgable in astronomy and stone construction.
The labyrinth of man-made walls, ceremonial areas, and chambers is more than 4000 years old. There is one fire pit that could date back as far as 7,300 years ago. It is possibly the oldest man-made construction in the U.S, at least that we know of.
#6. A Norse Coin in Maine
There is nothing unusual about finding ancient coins. What makes this coin unique is that it’s the only pre-Columbian Norse artifact to have been found in the U.S. It was discovered in 1957 at an archaeological site on the coast of central Maine.
It was originally thought that the coin was a British penny from the 12th century. In 1974 the coin was donated to the Maine State Museum and 4 years later, experts from London identified the coin to be Norse.
#5. Tool Collection North of Austin
A rather impressive set of tools was in Texas during the 90s. The 13,000-year-old tools are some of the oldest to have been discovered in the West. Some years later things got more interesting when parts of human teeth and 90 stone tools were found at the same site, dating back to 16,700 years ago.
#4. Judaculla Rock
This 1930s photo of the rock was taken after the markings were filled with chalk. Thanks to images like this, we are able to appreciate the intricacy of the markings as today many have eroded away or faded.
Judaculla was a giant from Cherokee legend. While protecting his land a group of disrespectful hunters came onto his land. As he was chasing them away, he fell. Using his hands to balance himself, the imprint of his hands was left on a rock. His 7-fingered handprint can be seen in the bottom-right of the photo.
The rock is made of soapstone, a soft metamorphic rock. It has a total of around 1,548 carvings.
#3. Pedro Mummy
Legend talks of Native American tribes like the Sioux and the Cheyenne. Stories were told of ‘little people’ or ‘tiny people eaters’. Some were healers and others are said to have had magical powers.
Nobody had considered the actual existence of these tiny people until 1932 when Cecil Main and Frank Carr were digging for gold.
#2. The Mysterious Egg of Lake Winnipesaukee
Even after more than 100 years of speculation, nobody is sure of the purpose of this mysterious lump of clay. Found in 1872, around 6 feet underground, it’s obvious that nature didn’t cause the carved markings.
This perfectly smooth stone is 4 inches tall and 2 inches thick. It weighs 18 ounces and can be compared to a goose egg. The rock that the stone is made from is not found in New Hampshire.
#1. Cahokia
Not far from the Mississippi River lies the site of the largest pre-Columbian city north of Mexico. Between 1050AD and 1200AD, it was larger than London and the population at its peak was approximately 20,000.The Cahokia is composed of at least 120 mounds. The most amazing being Monk’s Mound. Giant potholes have been found inside, suggesting the 104ft tall mound may have contained a wooden temple. Another 22,000 smaller postholes were surrounding the mounds and a grand plaza.
Deadly gunbattle with state trooper - caught on tape
Oregon State Police released this dramatic dashboard video of a deadly shootout between a trooper and driver. It happened on I-84, about 100 miles east of Portland. John Van Allen, 34, is pulled over, exits his car and begins shooting at the state trooper. Allen is killed in the exchange. He is found dead in his car a half-mile down the road. Three juvenilles were in the back of the car uninjured.

Driving on Interstate 10 from Seguin, TX to San Antonio, Texas
Seguin (/sᵻˈɡiːn/ sə-GHEEN) is a city in and the county seat of Guadalupe County, Texas, United States.[3] The estimated municipal population in 2012 was 26,272.[4]
Seguin is one of the oldest towns in Texas, founded just sixteen months after the Texas Revolution. The frontier settlement was a cradle of the Texas Rangers and home to the celebrated Captain Jack Hays, perhaps the most famous Ranger of all.[5]
Seguin was the home of Dr. John E. Park, who experimented in construction using concrete made from local materials. The nearly 100 structures—the courthouse, schools, churches, homes, cisterns, walls, etc.—made up the largest concentration of early 19th-Century concrete buildings in the U.S.[6] About 20 of them remain standing.

Abandoned Cemetery in the Woods Near Dayton, Ohio | Early 1800s Graves
Thanks to a tip from one of our subscribers we had the opportunity to explore an abandoned cemetery in the woods outside of Dayton, Ohio. The cemetery is bordered by farm field on 3 sides and a creek on the 4th. The creek runs down a 10 foot deep ravine with no bridge to cross. We found records that the cemetery has been surveyed just a few times over the years as it is not open to the public. The oldest grave of a 4 year old girl that died in 1817. A log church is believed to have once resided on the property but no remnants are left. It has been abandoned and unkept for much of its life. For a couple years here and there someone is allowed to clean it up only for it to fall back into disrepair. Many of the headstones have been knocked over and broken by falling trees.

34 family members arrested in drug bust; $400k in cocaine seized
ELYRIA, Ohio - Elyria Police, Lorain Police and the Lorain County Sheriff's Department arrested 34 people—all related to each other in some way—in connection with $400,000 of cocaine seized.
The investigation started last year and ramped up in the past two months, culminating in the arrests Friday, March 13 and Monday, March 16, investigators said during a press conference Wednesday.
Authorities seized 3.4 kilos of cocaine, worth $400,000, five guns and $85,000 in cash.
The leaders of what's been dubbed the Burns, Milton and Tillman Drug Trafficking Organization by authorities are Jarvis Burns, 33, of Sheffield Lake, who paid for the cocaine, and his cousin Travis Milton, 32, of Elyria, who orchestrated large-scale buys from two dealers in Cleveland.
The large-scale transactions were at Burns' and Milton's grandmother Grace Milton's home on Tattersal Court in Elyria.
They bought $43,000 of cocaine from Christopher Craig, 43 and Bernard Washington, 44, both of Cleveland, investigators said.
