Wonderful Circus had its premiere way back in 1977, and since that time has been the most-performed title of Laterna magika with more than 6 300 re-runs. In the current repertoire it is also the most typical sample of the art of Laterna magika: a work by a great creative team that synthesizes various components of theatre. Theatrical space is turned into a circus tent, and the audience is drawn into the action by, among other devices, a panoramic projected picture and popular tricks involving interpenetration of imagination and reality. This poetic story about a futile quest for the unachievable is embodied by figures of clowns incited by a magician – the Seducer – and a vision of the beautiful Venus, who takes on the forms of earthly women.
HUMAN LOCOMOTION
When a man in 19th-century America shot dead his wife’s lover, he was quite likely to be acquitted. As was the photographer Muybridge...
The ambitious project of the SKUTR tandem of stage directors focuses on the story of the world-renowned photographer Eadweard Muybridge, a pioneer in photography and film, the inventor of chronophotography, the electromagnetic shutter timer, the zoopraxiscope.
Eadweard Muybridge’s creations are generally well-known, yet precious few are familiar with his life story. Laterna magika has a lot in common with his work – motion, photography, film.
Visually bold images, speaking through dance and movement, engrossing music and lighting design, scenographic details – we tell Eadweard Muybridge’s story in a singular way, recasting 19th-century America into 21st-century theatre.

Josef Svoboda - scénograf, Czech artist and scenic designer
Josef Svoboda (May 10, 1920 in Čáslav - April 8, 2002 in Prague) was a Czech artist and scenic designer.
Svoboda was born in Čáslav, Czechoslovakia (today the Czech Republic). He began his training as an architect at the Central School of Housing in Prague. At the end of World War II he became interested in theatre and design. He began to study scenography at the Prague Conservatory and architecture at the Academy of Applied Arts. Svoboda became the principal designer at the Czech National Theatre in 1948 and held that position for more than 30 years. His multimedia installations Laterna Magika and Polyekran with director Alfréd Radok allowed him to be internationally known in 1958. These productions introduced the combination of live actors and filmed projections. Svoboda is also responsible for introducing modern technologies and materials such as plastics, hydraulics and lasers into his designs. In 1967 Svoboda created one of is best known special effects, a three-dimensional pillar of light. This was created by the use of an aerosol mixture which revealed low-voltage luminaries.
Josef Svoboda considered himself a scenographer rather than a designer; he chose to show a more holistic, architectural, non-naturalistic approach to design. His 700 plus designs include Insect Comedy (Czech National Theatre, 1946); Rusalka (Teatro La Fenice, Venice, 1958); Carmen (Metropolitan Opera, New York City, 1972); The Firebird (Royal Danish Theatre, Copenhagen, 1972); I Vespri Siliciani (Metropolitan Opera, 1974); Jumpers (Kennedy Center, 1974), many of them realized together with the opera director Václav Kašlík. He left the Czech National Theatre in 1992. In 1993, he became artistic director of the Laterna Magika Theatre.
Svobodas honors and awards include honorary doctorates from the Royal College of Arts in London, Denison and Western Michigan universities in the United States, and awards from the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT). He was made Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in Paris in 1976, and received the French Legion of Honor in 1993.
Josef Svoboda was laid to rest in Prague on April 15, 2002.
