Glass Blowing in Hokitika - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 115: Today our plans change when we have a classic New Zealand West Coast downpour so our salvation is to do some glass blowing in Hokitika at the Hokitika Glass Studio! Join us for today’s fun and unexpected activity as part of our 365 Days: 365 Activities in New Zealand.

30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today, the original plan is to check out the West Coast Treetop Walkway but when we get there we find it almost impossible to safely film with our cameras under the huge amount of rain! We need to find an alternative activity. What to do in Hokitika on a rainy day?
We head back to Hokitika town and remember a place in town called the Hokitika Glass Studio where you can watch people glass blowing. It’s such an unusual and skilful craft that we figure that would be fun to check out!
We go to the Hokitika Glass Studio and meet the team of the family business, Anthony and Barry, who invite us to try some glass blowing for ourselves, as well as watch them do some glass blowing demonstrations. We never thought we would be doing glass blowing in New Zealand but here we are attempting to do some glass art in Hokitika.
We learn a lot about the fascinating craft of New Zealand glass art and even get ourselves some glass souvenirs to remember our time here at Hokitika Glass Studio. It was our saviour for Day 115 of our New Zealand travel vlog where we need to do 365 activities in 365 days in New Zealand! Checking out the Hokitika Glass Studio is a pretty cool activity for a rainy day in Hokitika.
So what do you think of the Hokitika Glass Studio? Would you choose to do this rainy day activity in Hokitika?

Two rescued from helicopter in water
12:49 PM Tuesday May 7, 2013
Two people have been rescued after a small helicopter crashed
and sank into the sea off Auckland.
The KC 518 Composite Helicopter was seen to go down into the
seas in the channel between North Head and Mechanics Bay.
The pilot of the crashed helicopter, Peter Maloney, has told
reporters engine failure was the cause of the crash.
He saw a warning light and then heard an audible warning which
told him I was losing power''.
He said the helicopter was a prototype of his company Composite
Helicopters.
Auckland Westpac rescue helicopter pilot Barry Watkin saw the splash as the chopper hit the water.
There was an almighty splash as the rotor blades hit the water.
A second chopper was accompanying the one that crashed which hovered over the location, he said.
The pilot was able to make a mayday call and performed a semi-controlled crash where the chopper
turned on its side, which killed the rotor blades and allowed him and a passenger to escape uninjured.
It was submerged under a metre of water.
A navy boat in the area was first on the scene and was quickly joined by police boats
Mr Watkin said it was an extremely unlucky thing to happen - but those on board were also incredibly
lucky to walk away uninjured.
I'd be going straight to the lotto shop, he said.
A Navy spokeswoman said the inshore patrol vessel HMNZS Taupo happened to be sailing from
Devonport Naval Base at the time of the incident.
It was very much in the right place at the right time to provide rapid response to that emergency.
The spokeswoman said it was not a Navy helicopter, and she could not immediately confirm whether
the two injured people were taken to Devonport Naval Hospital.
Navy personnel used inflatable boats to get to the site.
There was no sign of the helicopter on the surface of the water.
Fire Service spokeswoman Megan Ruru said their services were also responding to the crash.
We've been advised that there is a helicopter into the water which is just off North Head. Two persons
have been rescued and we're currently liaising with Westpac and the police.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was asked to assist, but isn't involved in the rescue.
The Fire Service is also responding to the crash. NZ Herald Online

Taupo - A Geothermal Wonderland
This video contains video clips and pics from our trip to Wairakei Terraces - spa and health club , Craters of the moon , and Lava glass.
This was a one day trip . Started early in the morning and was back by evening in Auckland. This was a wonderful experience even though it got a bit hard with our baby who of course does not want to be in the car seat for long. A day well spend .
Winter Holidays in Great Lake Taupo - Kereopa Family Episode 6
Last month DK and Renee came to Taupo for a couples' retreat. This month they returned for a pre-ski season weekend away with the family and checked out a few of the 'thermal attractions' in and around Great Lake Taupo. They visited the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland where they checked out several geothermal attractions such as the Champagne Pools and the Artist's Palette area, as well as taking a look at some mud pools and watching the eruption of the Lady Knox Geyser. The next day they were privy to a glass blowing demonstration at Lava Glass by Lynden Over, before enjoying lunch in the café and a stroll around the whimsical and vibrant Lave Glass Sculpture Garden. Their trip was topped off with a visit to the Wairakei Terraces Thermal Pools. Next month... they hit the slopes!
